+Alastair Ward Technically....yes. moonshine is just associated (at least in the states) with backhills and illegal to make on your own. But there are legal moonshine stills (the only difference like you said is,taxes are paid and it's "official" but they are both still made the exact same way.

Legally they are only allowed to go up to 90%, but proper Poitìn is 100% volume. It's basically pure ethanol.. So really, no different from moonshine.

My friend is from Northern Ireland and when he visited his family he brought back some homemade Poitín from his uncle. I've drank a lot of different whisky/whiskey, vodka and such in my time, but i've never had a drink that affected me as quickly and strongly as that did. It turned me into a mumbling, slurring idiot and it burnt the skin off my lips for the better part of a week! It was worth it though. :)

I had a small shot of poitin when I was in Ireland a few years ago and it's one of the few spirits I've ever really liked. I may have to track down a bottle of it to sit next to the A'Bunadh and leer meaningfully at people who come to mine for drinks.
