Irish Gymnastics official criticised for skipping Black child in medal ceremony

A re-surfaced video from March 2022 showing a Black gymnast being ignored during a medal ceremony in Ireland by an official from Gymnastics Ireland (GI) has sparked outrage on social media. Following the backlash, GI has publicly apologised to the gymnast and her family.

It appears that the lady who issued the medals actually stopped in front the black girl… looked her in the face… went past her and put the medal on the other gymnast THEN steps back and briefly stared her down again…before moving on and eventually leaving with a smug satisfied look on her face.

Sadly, I know this is a baby, they look like they’re around 10, but racists don’t not care about age when it comes to mistreating black children... I say that to say, I’d be willing to bet every single thing I own that this ain’t the “first cut”. Racists are ruthless. They don’t even know how much this exposes themselves though. Because they claim their hatred for black people is a response to black peoples “behaviors” which are of course the stereotypes they placed on black people. But when it comes to children, they haven’t even had the chance to become any of the stereotypes they claim is the reason for their racism . So it can’t possibly be that their racism is a response to that when black children are completely & entirely innocent of every one of their claims & they even hate them.

The video was filmed by the father of the girl (as mentioned by him in the interview to BBC News Africa). However, the video became public only in September 2023. This is because, as stated by the Gymnastics Ireland, they reached a settlement only in August 2023 (see the quote below). So, most likely the parents of the girl didn't want or couldn't publish the video until the legal resolution had been reached with the GI. However, once the resolution had been reached - they published the video and it went viral. Here is the quote from the GI: "Subsequently both parties agreed to enter mediation which was independently facilitated by Sports Disputes Solutions Ireland as per our policy/procedure which led to a resolution agreed by both parties in August 2023."

Even if she had a medal tangled up as they have tried to explain, she should have spoken to the girl 1000 times and gently that her medal was on her way. Not just ignore her and leave her there not knowing what was going on.

Having the same thing happened to me. I'm mad. When I completed my masters, I asked the teacher for a 2 weeks extension to submit my final project. He accepted. I passed, graduated with flying colors. But from what I understand, past a date at which I could register for the graduation event and diploma give away. My teacher and lots of secretary told me to explain the situation to a admin member and tell her has this happens all the time. And that anyway at the event they pass out decorative diploma's and send the real one at a later date. She flat out REFUSED to register me to event. I asked multiple time. But she wasn't having it. I was the only black person in my years field. It was a electrical engineering masters in control systems. Anyway, I couldn't attend the event, received my masters diploma 2 months later, celebrated myself. Than I later learned , that 1/4 of the graduation event attended haven't even finished all their master classes and could still attend the event, if they had less than 3 classes left and at max 1 extra semesters... Obviously they were white. Note, to be fair, they were also Arabic. Anyway I was pissed.

At the point in the video where the child is most definitely overlooked I see no “entanglement of the medals” as claimed by the people in charge. If true, the people in charge of the ceremony were dunces for not being better prepared. I think the medal handler truly only sees her own reflection which in this case happened to be very white!

@rahxrahster I've had 2 black friends that were born and raised in Ireland. Those men are tough as nails. They told me growing up in Ireland as a black male, you have to be really good at running or fighting because you will get attacked due to your ethnicity. One was in their late 30's and the other in their mid 20's. I can't use only their account to make a complete generalisation, but they were two credible sources and I have to take into account their opinion.
