There are many Irish, even republicans in the South, who also still feel they are also British. Not politically but culturally. Just because one is a loyal and patriotic Irish citizen does not mean one denies history or hates their neighbours who share the British Isles with them! One can love both Ireland and her sisters. I would never concede one inch of Irish independence but I can still admire and respect the Queen and cherish the many good historical and present ties that bind us.
GWAN BOYS! My grandfather, from the Irish Republic, served in the Irish Guards and I'm very proud of the effort you guys put in for us.

When does the 2d tune begin during this clip...at 1:33? Also, what rank or position is the man with came under his who appears a couple times near edge of screen at about 1:32? I notice that the berets appear to be of both green and a more olive it brown color in the same regiment. Is that due to different roles, specialties or do my eyes deceive me? And right at the end of the formation there's a segment of soldiers wearing much darker uniforms than the rest. Just curious. Thx.

And you get a name-check in the song, as it's based on the main character (a Highwayman) having a run-in with British army officer Captain Farrell! Local highwaymen holding up English landlords were considered national heroes in 17th century Ireland, so marching to this tune in the British army of today just shows how far we have come.
Soldiers of all lands unite.

They are truly elite soldiers. They are also the only regiment in the Brit Army that, upon returning from a campaign is allowed to go to church (mass) before reporting to the Queen. This stipulation was written into the agreement when the unit was formed. It is a traditionally Irish Catholic regiment.

The Queen mother was the honorary Commandant of the Black Watch regiment. Upon her death The Black Watch could not provide the Honor Guard for her Funeral. (They are not a Guards Regiment.) They asked the Irish Guards to provide the Honor Guard for her funeral and the Procession. The Guards stood in for them at the funeral.

The Irish Guards were always the choice for the Queen Mother's funeral procession. She had no official appointment to them but they were her favourite. She called them her soldiers, her boys, such was her affinity to the regiment.

The Irish Guards had tragically lost two soldiers in Irag in 2003. One was a Dubliner and the Irish authorities permitted his funeral party to parade in uniform - the first time since 1922 that British soldiers had been seen in Dublin.

soulofthenorth I think you will find its only a small percentage of Irishmen that claim to be British. Most from the loyalist community hate all things Irish. You most remember that our language, wolfhounds, shamrock, kilts, and songs belong to the actual Irish people....When the Guards had a large IRISH content then it would be fair to use any of these but now i think its like 11 out of 400. So not really Irish.
God bless them all and their commrades in arms also
yes it was a war no one wanted to go back to..... more reason to have stayed 1st time in to see the end out
