A few friends and I have our absinthe cocktail that can be drank as long or short drink. The Black Jack (long) One shot of Absinthe, One shot of Blackcurrant liqueur (or cordial if you for weaker or can't source bc liqueur), Top up with lemonade The short version just omits the lemonade. It tastes very much like the chewy sweet of the same name.

Love your channel. The history of these cocktails makes them even better. I don't think Hemingway started out drinking 3-5 of these he probably built up a tolerance over time and it took 3-5 to get him where he wanted to go ;-) Always looking forward to your next video.

I make these with some regularity. You're right that the full jigger can be a bit much and overwhelm the drink. I like to use 1 oz absinthe, 1/4 oz (or less!) simple or demarara or maple syrup, add champagne until the absinthe louches. The touch of sweetness and viscosity from the syrup harmonizes the elements of the beverage nicely.

The Death in the Afternoon is one of my favorite absinthe cocktails. Another is absinthe and tonic, with lime. I like to top up the absinthe with tonic until it's just barely starting to louche, then add a single fair sized ice cube. It's relaxing to watch the milky trails glide down off the ice cube and change the drink to opaque from the bottom up

The "Belle Epoch" in France ran from 1871 to 1914, which was before Hemingway lived in Paris. Hemingway did help make post WWI Paris in the 1920s legendary. Called the "Crazy Years" in France it was also known as the "Roaring Twenties" and the "Jazz Age" in the USA. Hemingway is also closely and forever identified with the term the "Lost Generation", although he did not create the phrase.

Yep. Belle Époque is the period between the Napoleonic Wars and World War I. Hemingway arrived in Paris after the war, which was a much different place than it was prior. Paris after the Great War was much more influenced by modernism, and Hemingway hung out with people like Ezra Pound, James Joyce, and Pablo Picasso. Still, can you imagine being a part of that scene? Incredible amount of talent and creativity. And booze.

If you're interested in another cocktail that's associated with bullfighting, may I suggest the Blood and Sand? It's a reference to the Rudolph Valentino silent film of the same name. I'd also recommend that you deviate from the "classic" recipe and use Maraschino liqueur in place of Cherry Heering, given you're not fond of overly sweet cocktails. Slàinte mhath! As to your observations as your Death In The Afternoon settled, the water in your Prosecco did indeed emulsify with the oils in the absinthe, causing a similar louche... and those same oils were why the effervescence in the Prosecco disappeared so quickly. Lipids (fats and oils) will absolutely kill head retention in beer, so by extension the same thing happens in this cocktail.

At the time, I didn't have a very impressive collection of spirits. Since then, I've started exploring the world of Bourbon, Rye and Irish Whiskey. Right now, my favorites are Redbreast Irish Whiskey and Foursquare Sagacity Rum. Foursquare Distilleries makes some outstanding aged rums.

Another stellar production. If you like sweet and sour drinks, you should try a Sex with an Alligator: 1/3oz Midori mixed with 1/2oz sweet and sour or pineapple juice over ice and shaken then strained into a martini glass. Then, float 1/3oz Chambourd (it should settle to the bottom) and then float 1/4oz Jagermeister on the top of the drink. You should end up with three distinct layers.

Love the Death in the afternoon. I just rarely have both ingredients on hand at the same time. I still need to try Hemingway's 2 other drinks: the Hemingway daiquiri(of course), and his original spec for it, the Papa Dobal. After trying a standard daiquiri, he asked for one with double the rum, and no sweetener. So, 3-4oz of rum with a splash of lime, shaken and strained.

So. This summer I’ve been enjoying quite a few gin and tonics.... And I think I might have improved on the recipe, by adding one minor ingredient... Let me explain. I found a substitute for my go to gin, Hendricks. It’s called Highclere Castle gin, and the junipers they use to concoct this blessed spirit are grown on the grounds of the estate where they filmed “ Downton Abbey” if my sources are correct. So I’ve been very happy drinking this as you normally would, in a gin and tonic. But a short time ago, I did a little meddling with the cocktail and found a variant that Myself and others are quite happy with. The alteration is very simple. After pouring the gin into whatever glass you chose, you add the tonic as per usual, but stop short of filling the glass and add a splash of Vitamin water XXX, which is mainly pomegranate and acacia juice.... then the lime!?!?

You certainly get my stamp of approval as a member of the advisory board of the Wormwood Society (largest online resource for absinthe in the world). 💚 Wonderful video and presentation! I absolutely love your videos and love that you give accurate information about absinthe. I’m actually going to be serving Death in the Afternoons at my wedding using a bottle of Jade Nouvelle-Orleans sent to me by Ted Breaux, the owner of Jade Liqueurs (the top absinthe brand in the world, you should TOTALLY get one of the Jades because they’re out of this world delicious and high quality). Needless to say, I’m incredibly excited about it. 💚 The bubbles disappearing in the champagne are due to the essential oils in (properly-made) absinthe killing the carbonation. The first time I showed it to my mom, she was incredibly confused. 🤣 Those same essential oils are brought out of suspension when you add water to it, since those essential oils are soluble in high-proof alcohol, but not soluble in water. That’s why the test of a high quality absinthe is how thick, opaque, and opalescent the louche is when you add water. No louche (or a thin, transparent louche) means no oils, no oils means no (or very little) plants used in the distillation or maceration process during production. Again, love your channel so much that I even love your non-absinthe cocktail videos and I recommend you to my friends all the time!

Papa Hemingway reputably could hold his liquor. It wouldn't surprise me that his simple unadorned writing style was due to the speed at which he wrote. If Hemingway could ignore embellishing with adjectives in his stories, he could finish quicker and he would have a much longer happy hour each day.

The cloudiness is basically fatty acids, esters, proteins and other stuff coming out of solution because you are diluting it below a certain ABV (around 46%, I think). This also happens with whiskey that has not been chill-filtered -- obviously any such whiskey is going to be bottled at higher proof, likely cask strength. You dilute those below 46%, and you'll see the so-called "Scotch Mist"

I haven’t watched in a while (your cocktail videos in the beginning of the pandemic sure helped time go by haha) but are you no longer doing shots of the liquor before making the cocktails??? 😂

Hello there! I'm relatively new to your cocktail channel. I'm wondering if you've ever made a Highball cocktail or tried one? Hope you're staying safe and healthy.

That’s a bit too much absinthe, yeah. I’d try half that measure although the absinthe still has quite the impact even if you just use an absinthe rinse. Three would put anyone except the most professional drinkers into a highly intoxicated state; five would likely land you in the hospital. In spite of how odd this may sound these are VERY drinkable-it’s one of THOSE parties. 💚

Seems like an interesting simple cocktail, but I would add 30 ml absinthe and lemoncello. To be honest the Hemingway Daiquiri is more appealing to me.

Hey Ciara, in the video for the Sufferin Bastard you mentioned the famous Mai Tai, but I do not see one done on your channel yet. The Mai Tai is a drink that has been bastardized a thousand times, I'd love to see your take on the original..s versus the modern versions. In addition to that since it's been bastardized a thousand times, why not do it once more? Below is my own cocktail based on a local places version which I call "A Krakens Blood" 2oz Kaken Black spiced rum 2oz pineapple/coconut rum or 3/4th oz coconut rum 2oz pineapple juice 1oz Orange juice 1/2 oz Grenadine. All measurements can be adjusted to balance the flavor of the coconut. Ideally it should be present but not overbearing. And I recommend a very simple coconut rum, nothing with any funk to it, or most idea is Calico Jack's pineapple and coconut rum.
