I remember watching this game in Valencia, my home town, and this song kept stucked in my mind, as it showed so much courage and pride in a clear defeat. The day after Spain won the Euro 2012, I went with some schoolmates to Donaghmede, Dublin, to learn English. Once there, in the first week of classes, our teachers taught us what this song meant and their lyrics. Since then, each time I hear it and each time I watch irish people chanting it, I can’t manage to not get emotional. Some years later, when Celtic came to play against Valencia for the Europa League eightfinals, I went to the stadium’s WC during the halftime, where I saw myself surrounded by lots of Irish fans. The deep joy I felt when I started the chant (I saw the chance of my life), and my valencian friends were looking at the massive thing it became, is one of the most unexplainable feelings I ever felt! Long live Ireland!! 💚

This just goes to show everyone what it means to support your team. You pay the money for flights and match tickets, you sit there with your fellow Irishmen and Irishwomen and when you're getting your ass handed to you, what do you do? You belt out one of the best songs about your country that was ever written. Singing in the process of being defeated in an auld game of soccer. Why? FUR DA CRAIC LAD!!!! In my opinion, this needs to happen again. At this year's Euros, with The Notorious, or even the Olympic games. There is something about Irish sporting fans like this that needs to be seen more often.

@@niallyshere short answer: "The Fields of Athenry" represents Irish unity, even in the most dire of circumstances. Longer answer: The song tells of a man who was arrested and exiled for trying to steal food for his starving children. (During the famon, the Colonial British Army stole what little food the Irish did have, and punished the Irish severely for trying to steal it back.) The Irish were starved to death, executed and exiled in great numbers. Millions emigrated to survive. Hence why it was "so lonely round the fields of Athernry". But nomatter what, the Irish stick together. Even through The Troubles! Even with a partition dividing the island! But that's another story. #think32
