We decided to trade our busy life as home and business owners to chase the dream we’ve harboured for 10years.
How did we get here
After years of saying one day, we finally realised that these opportunities don’t just land in your lap and if we seriously wanted to make a difference to the Earth then we were going to have to stop talking about it and do it!
We sold all our stuff, got rid of the mortgage, sold our camper conversion business and landed in a dream come true. After traveling in our van we settled here in the west of Ireland. A place that has always been special to us. Annie is half Irish and since we met 13 years ago and she took me to meet her family i fell in love with Ireland too.
Now we’ve made this dream a reality there is no stopping us! our plan is to work hard, meet new people and learn new skills that will guide us on our journey of permaculture and creating a way of life that sings to us. One where we aren’t bound to the banks, working every hour and outsourcing all of our needs. A simple way of life, with connection to ourselves, each other, the earth and our community.

Whenever I start a big project, I make a serious estimate of how long it will take to do. Then I multiple by four or five, and that's how long it really takes....

Annie - the trick with Jerusalems it to eat them regularly. Your body will adapt and you don't have the gas problem anymore. They are related to sunflowers and give you beautiful flowers as well.

Great vlog as always. Annie is becoming an awesome logger in her own right. I know this is a year late, but I am binge watching, doing a catch up, so I don’t expect a response - just helping the algorithm.

Thank you Annie for the lovely garden tour... your work has paid off; everything is growing well! You did a wonderful job as videographer and commentator. Poor Bruce stuck up in the attic while you and the girls enjoyed the fresh air....oh well, that's how you get things done. Kudos to all of you for working together as a team.

House is flying together now, won't be long before you're plastering and painting. Garden looks great, pity about the dogs munching the canes but they might survive yet.

I bet you will be awash in eggs soon. This morning I offloaded 3 dozen eggs on my unsuspecting neighbors! I have 9 hens; 6 young ones and 3 older. Home made eggs are so much tastier! Your homestead is brilliant. We built our own house (still not done but very livable) and have done the gardening and self reliant stuff since the 1980s. It's a really cool way to raise your kids. More power to you! It's not the easiest but very rewarding.

Hi it took my new chickens over a month to settle in before laying..Just remember they need a lille sand pit or buy bag of ground oyster shells from local farmers coop or online and mix with feeding as it gives them what they need to form shells on eggs I had trouble with chickens laying also due to this only found out online so worth looking up
@OffGridBruce
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips. They seem to have started laying now. I think they are still fairly young
One thought for your chooks... Annie mentioned they're on layer feed. Perhaps they should still be on grower? We feed our chickens grower feed while they're young (it has more protein). They transition to layer only after they start laying. 👍🥚
@OffGridBruce
Жыл бұрын
That makes sense. Do you think they get enough protein from the bugs etc on the pasture?
@catbot6733
Жыл бұрын
@@OffGridBruce That's a tough one :) Especially while they're little and learning. I treat the forage like a wonderful supplement, without relying on it. More that it's great that they'll eat less feed overall when they're foraging a lot, if they're finding what they need. But the feed guarantees everyone always has access to what they need. Even those who had a no-bug day, or who aren't good foragers (by age or breed). I think there may be other differences too, like layer has some minerals etc mixed in that their growing bodies aren't ready for till they start laying. Keeping chickens is quite an adventure, but so worth it. Good luck!

How old are your hens? If they are six to eight months old, they should be laying. I've had free range hens that decided my beautifully appointed laying boxes were not acceptable but the garbage can full of old baling twine tucked into a shed was perfect! You might check to see if your hens have found an alternative to your beautiful nesting boxes!
@OffGridBruce

They are fairly young. Their combs are still small at the mo. The white one I filmed is laying occasionally and she looks the oldest
Two comments don’t take it negatively just trying to help. Before put up the stuffing would it not have been better to fit the insulation colotex or king span sheets first to the ceiling. Between the rafters and the sheet over the whole thing. Do it from the wall plat to the ridge line and tape up all the seams to stop air escaping. Easier to do and a good job. The second thing the beam u cut at the roof window is a supporting beam both ends of this will need supported and the joists either side of the windows beefed up with steel to carry the ends. A load of snow on the roof could be an issue. U still a long way to go up there yet but stay positive and keep at it and u will get there. Sorry if I sound negative
@OffGridBruce
Жыл бұрын
Hey Marcus. Not negative at all. I like getting other people’s perspectives as it has helped a lot in the past. The original framing of the roof was non existent and the purlins you refer to hve been cut like that since the mid 90s way before we got the place. Completely wrong as you say but mad that the roof never sagged in all that time. Since then I didn’t film but it but I have fitted ridge beams between the chimney breasts and gable ends and moved and secured the mid purlins properly. The partitions I put in are to add support for the rafter span which is now back in tolerance (under 2m between purlins). I’m fitting 50mm insulation between and a further 50mm over the rafters so I don’t think I could secure the top plate to the rafters properly after insulating unless I’m misunderstanding what you are saying?
@marcusd2380
Жыл бұрын
@@OffGridBruce just trying to say get the roof air tight fill gaps with foam when fitting the insulation and tape all the seam with silver foil tape. But it nsulate from wall plate to ridge and that way any Eve stage u have will in insulated as well. I wish I did mine that way but no and it was more time consuming and more expensive and not as good a job
@OffGridBruce
Жыл бұрын
@@marcusd2380 thanks for the advice on the insulation. It’s going to make a huge difference once in. Does it need a vapour barrier seal as it’s vented the other side?
@marcusd2380
Жыл бұрын
@@OffGridBruce I don’t do mine but should have done to me regs at the time. But if u tape all the joints with 100mm foil tape or wider ur going to be air tight. Robyn clevit has a few good video on you tube on how to do it. The taping is pain full but worth it for air tightness. Drafts kill and insulation u put in

Sorry if this is a silly question, but why did you double up on the partition floor plates? Great video as always!
@OffGridBruce
Жыл бұрын
The floors have been framed in the wrong direction (lengthwise) so it’s just to add strength to the the joist underneath the partition. Maybe over kill but wanted to be sure. My only other option was to rip the entire floor out and reframe it and I really didn’t fancy it
