Anyone Can See
Irene Cara was best known as a singer of movie themes and maintained an acting career that began in childhood. Raised by Latin American parents in New York City, she made her Broadway debut in 1967 (at age eight) in the musical Maggie Flynn and returned to the stage several years later with a role in the off-Broadway production The Me Nobody Knows. By the age of 18, she had diversified her résumé with TV and film gigs, too, landing roles in the TV mini-series Roots 2 and in the films Aaron Loves Angela and Sparkle. In 1980, Cara officially catapulted herself into the mainstream with an appearance in the film Fame, for which she performed the title song, an Oscar-winning Top Ten hit. Also featured in the film was her Top 40 single "Out Here on My Own." Capitalizing on the movie's success, Cara released her debut album, Anyone Can See, in 1982. One year later, she topped the charts with "Flashdance...What a Feelin'," a song she'd co-written for the movie Flashdance. Cara took home another Oscar for her work, along with several Grammys and two AMA awards.
Her second album, What a Feelin', was released later in 1982, featuring a disco-pop sound that differed from the previous album's emphasis on R&B. What a Feelin' spawned three Top 40 hits -- "Why Me?" "Breakdance," and "The Dream (Hold on to Your Dream)" -- the latter of which also served as the movie theme for Joel Schumacher's D.C. Cab. Cara landed more movie roles as the '80s progressed, but her third album, Carasmatic, was tied up in litigation for years, prompting Cara to return to the stage, where she participated in the well-received touring revival of Jesus Christ Superstar in 1993. She toured Europe and Asia, performed as a backup singer, and recorded several dance-pop singles released on Polydor. Cara also performed on two musical television shows, NBC's Hit Me, Baby, One More Time and CMT's Gone Country. In 2011, she and her band Hot Caramel released their first album, Irene Cara Presents Hot Caramel. Irene Cara died at her home in Largo, Florida on November 25, 2022; she was 63 years of age. There was a private funeral held for Irene Cara and she was cremated and no grave has yet to be reported.

She sold her house in Newport Ritchie. Earlier than that, she had a Home in Hawaii. She had to take care of her older sister, and all of her older sister’s children. She is helping pay for their college. Her sister was 10 years older, but Irene was the mature adult that took care of the family. 😢❤❤❤

I sort of figure she has helped her family. It is sad, at times, when family lean too much of those that have been successful. My God keep her in his heart because she was a unique individual with so much talent and love in her heart.

She did and had all that and had only a net worth of 2 Million!
I was there to clean her house once a week for eight years starting in Newport Ritchie. She would talk to the members of her band on occasion, and when I first met her she was still touring. She said she may $20,000 a show!!!! She was a wonderful person, and she really deserved to be much happier in her life 😢

dying alone is no very different from dying accompanied, you will have to cross THE VALLEY OF DEATH ALONE ANYWAY, no one goes with you, but of course when we die if there is someone there to say some prayers for us it greatly facilitates our passage, but it shows us that we are here in passing and to die we just need to be alive, I hope her soul is well and at peace because she looked very lonely and sad person.

My brother passed alone in his house just the month before Cara. He passed from pancreatic cancer, and there for the last 2 months, he became a hermit too. But with me, we were so close that the night before, I just had this very uneasy feeling like I had trouble breathing and SO much anxiety. I believe it was my brother telling me in spirit that he was leaving this earth. I asked my hubby to go check on him the very next morning, and sure enough.....😢. May Irene Cara rest in peace, and also my brother.

Out of all of the songs played at my senior prom in '83, the Flash dance song is the only one I can remember. Every time I hear it, it takes me back to the night I had my first date with a cute little girl that I'll be celebrating 35 years of marriage with this year.
Rest in peace to a beautiful soul, who brought so much joy to her fans throughout her life. It's too bad she was not treated with more respect and dignity.
I loved Irene's work! I missed her from the limelight but she left a beautiful legacy. She's just a year younger than I am. May she rest in peace 🙏 ❤
What a beautiful voice she had and such talent. It's very sad that fighting for what was obviously hers, because she won, put her on a blacklist and probably took away from her more than what she gained in winning the legal battle. It's also extremely sad how she died alone but it also almost seems like that's what she wanted. I feel sorry for her. Sounds like she may have been suffering from depression. Scott, I love how you are always so compassionate and nonjudgmental. It's easy for some people to talk bad of the dead because they are not there to defend themselves. With you, there's never that concern. It's just facts without prejudice. RIP to this beautiful lady who gave the world some wonderful music from deep within her heart and soul 💐

Respect the way people wants to live and Irene Cara is no exception. She wants to be left alone and I kind of understood the way she felt about an illness that separates you from other interests. Great song Gloria
It is sad she passed away so young. She made really great songs.
She had formed an all girl band the last decade or so of her life. And from what I read from one of her band mates, she wanted to get back out there, but was afraid to pull the trigger. She would get them all together in the studio to record something, and then, not put it out for the public. I don't blame her. The industry really did a number on her. I don't blame her for being a recluse either. I'm one on the weekends when I don't have to work. Thanks for showing us her home. May she RIP...
Thanks for this video Scott, Irene didn't get the flowers 💐 she deserved...thanks again for making a video about her

I loved the beautiful and talented Irene Cara. Her iconic songs will live on. It is very sad that she died alone but maybe that is what she wanted since she lived alone. I pray she went to sleep and never woke up. Rest in Peace Irene you are loved and forever missed by many.
Thank you for showing her home because as a fan I was interested. After seeing that she lived such a modest lifestyle, I’m not surprised that she she was so adamant about her privacy. It anger’s me that she should have been much more financially well off due to the success her recordings/songwriting. It was the president of Network Records who blackballed/derailed her career after being bitter about her lawsuit against the label. He literally stole millions from her and all she recouped was 1 million dollars. She had no choice but to live modestly after that outcome. I truly was a fan of Irene Cara and feel that their hasn’t been anything close to a tribute fitting her contribution to the entertainment industry. She was a successful actress in the 70’s and an eighty’s icon. Both her movies and music lives on.
I was a big fan of Irene Cara when I was a teenager back in the 1980s. I always did loved her, her music, and her acting in movies. I was real devastated when I heard the sad 😢 news about her passing away and I cried for days and months over her. So sad 😭 she died alone in that house. She was very talented and smart. R.I.P. I remember her performance at the Australian Sydney Olympics. Amazing voice. Rip Irene. Her voice and music so iconic.
I knew she won one Academy Award but Two? That's Incredible. RIP Irene Cara.😢
Someone who's dear to me sang 'Out Here On My Own' innumerable times trying to make it to the music industry. And as an 80's kid, she was always on the radio for as long as I could listen to. I also heard about an attempt for a comeback. Very sad to hear of her passing. Her music and films shall linger on for far too long. Thanks for this homage, Scott. Bless your heart. Long live, Irene Cara.
R.I.P. Irene, their all singing in heaven as we speak. That's Scott for doing this.🇨🇦
Irene Cara was a massively talented singer and performer whom found and pursued her gift throughout her life. Good up-front research on your part Scott on an 80s icon whom is etched in the North American collective memory as a pioneer of pop culture. For those of us who lived through the 80s and remember most of the music, movies and videos; Irene Cara was legendary. @@SCOTTONTAPE It's about time my Toronto homie, to make a few calls and get yourself inside the Kingswood. My understanding is the current Director of Communications at CWL is very open to sharing the inner-workings of CWL to pro-podcasters.
The house had a nice pool in the backyard. She tried to revamp her career with a podcast. She was a recluse. Even as a young girl, she was very artistic. She was definitely one of a kind!!!! GOD BLESS YOU IRENE!!! She also had a house in Santa Fe. I’ve visited the house with her. She was into spirituality, and she was pretty fed up with the world. After the lawsuit and having to defend herself, it all ate away at her.
I concur with your observation that Irene was just a likeable girl who never forced herself to get attention despite her raw talent. I appreciated her talent in the few movies I saw her appear in as well as some songs like her cover version of the standard Look Into Your Heart which she performed with the same tenderness as Aretha's version. RIP beautiful Latino girl.

Miss Irene and I are the same age, I feel as if we grew up together I loved her in sparkle, she always carry herself as a well-rounded person I know how it feels to get up in age and just not be your old self, losing family members as you age it can be difficult, I tried to be as sociable as possible, because it's very easy to become a recluse. Rest in peace Irene

That's not true. We're not angels. We have a soul that goes back to God. Your soul either goes to Heaven or Hell. Jesus is the way, truth, and the life. No one comes close to the father except thru him. John 14,6. You cannot enter the kingdom of God unless you're born again. John 3,3 I love Irene too but,if you die without Christ. You will go to Hell. You have to repent before Christ and surrender your life to him.🙏

@@chv307It’s the biblical truth, the truth of God Who created all, that we must be born again to go to heaven. We’re born again when we BELIEVE that Christ Jesus saved us at the cross by shedding His blood for the forgiveness of all sin. “Surrender your life to Christ”, is not a biblical statement, and may give people the impression that you must do more than simply BELIEVE on Christ’s finished work in order to be saved. Yes! No one goes to heaven within being IN CHRIST~~ but it’s by FAITH in Him, ALONE.

She wasn't much older than me. I am pushing the 60 button this year. I remember I used to rush home from school back in 1980 just to sit my butt down and watch Fame from the day it first aird here in the UK. I didn't know she had passed away bless her. I loved Flashdance too, that was a great movie. I remember some of the characters names but not all. Coco, Bruno and Leroy are the main ones. I too have diabetes and hypertention and heart attacks run on my Dad's side of the family. I also live as a type of 'Hermit'. You get to a certain age and if your life hasn't been good then you learn to just not trust people any longer especially when your own flesh and blood has broke your heart and let you down and friends and lovers or ex to be precise all break your heart and let you down so I just live in a reasonably quiet bay just off the high street and keep myself to myself. So sad to know of Irene Cara's passing though. R.I.P Ms Cara 🙏🙏🙏

I loved her voice, songs and her acting in Fame too. I can totally relate to her wanting to be alone. I rarely go anywhere now unless I have to go for my food shopping. Depression and anxiety are bad. I'm still going for my wee dogs sake. I'll probably pass away at home alone just like Irene Cara.
