The title is misleading. There were at least 10 Benedictine monasteries in Ireland when this was filmed. Cistercians and Olivetans are Benedictine.

Russia and the Eastern Orthodox monasteries are all being rebuilt to their old glory and are full of nuns and monks. We need to do the same in the West with our Roman Catholic religious houses and buildings.

There was a great religious revival following the Council of Trent with many vocations to the priesthood and religious life with the founding of new religious orders and congregations. The opposite of this has taken place in the wake of Vatican II.

This documentary is slightly disturbing. Tbh it makes the ears burn off me as a Catholic. I expect it to do the same for many others. Not so much for the benedictines and their carry on (which is fine). Rather because of the hostess and what she is saying about the church and how the book replaces the priests which is utterly ridiculous...

Friars may not take money from the government or the church, they must earn it. They take a vow of poverty, and use money to keep helping the poor.

Why are you referring to friars? The video is about Benedictine _monks_ . Monks and friars are not the same; and the Rule of Saint Benedict does not explicitly require the monk to take a vow of poverty, per se (or rather not in the outright way that the mendicant friars are required); rather the vow of Conversatio Morum implies the humility and selflessness of the monk by requiring the surrendering of personal possessions and tokens of individuality for the sake of the community to which he belongs and to which he is expected to offer himself fully.

Now perhaps I misperceived it but the female narrator seemed more than a tad snarky in my estimation. She reminded me of a rather pervasive attitude that seems rather disquieting among those who are without faith and in the media, a kind of sarcastic and judgmental tone of speech and choice of words, but with just enough nuance to not quite earn the label of bigot while getting a knowing nod from her brethren. You see it in the media all the time and the best you can hope for is that they keep from adding their personal spin in what they report. Inevitably much like a flea infested dog they cannot help but scratch the itch having to offer some kind of shot which at once reveals their candid opinion. It is the same smell of bigotry that has ever been but today it seems more so in some quarters. as for instance among the media, I call such things from the ocean of information and sea of misinformation a snark attack. A nip here a nip there. A knowing kind of snarky talk they use. A verbal wink. I find the theater of life sufficient without the need for spin in the media.

......Finally, those who believe the Church is worth billions fail to understand that although the Church has a clear hierarchical structure in terms of authority, it is not monolithic in its finances. Even if the pope wanted to liquidate those assets and give them to the poor, he would be hard-pressed to do so. Those who think the Vatican is one of the wealthiest organizations in the world are gravely mistaken, just as assumptions about religious orders, and other Catholic organizations being so are also incorrect. In reality, the Holy See achieves a very modest profit in most years. Although the Church has accumulated a vast number of buildings, sacred art, and property through her long history, much of that wealth is both expensive to maintain and not easily transferred into liquid cash. Despite the impracticality of selling off all its property, as desired by critics, the Church views her inventory of priceless works of art, manuscripts, and cathedrals as items belonging to humanity-a collection of wealth of which the Church is not the owner but the guardian. Critics of the Church believe it should dispense with all but the most minimal property in order to fulfill what they believe the Church’s mission is. Yet this viewpoint betrays a misunderstanding of Gospel poverty and fails to recognize that the wealth and property the Church has is entirely at the service of its mission to bring the salvation of Jesus to humanity. Rebuilding the cathedral of Notre Dame is a decision and responsibility of the French government and will take the combined efforts of private citizens, state and ecclesial funding to bring to fruition.

Note the Celtic spirituality and the icons in the video, while the monks complain about modern Western legalism and distant religion.... This is because the West was ORTHODOX before the 1054 Schism! St. Patrick and all Saints of Ireland, please pray for the West to return to its good mystical Orthodox roots! Study for yourself and see Orthodoxy is the true original Church filled with love and hope.

You are wrong. I have no idea what barrow you are trying to push, but you are only succeeding in embarrassing yourself. In Rome there was certainly Byzantine forms of worship and ecclesial culture. This does not mean that Rome was in any way Orthodox. As for Ireland, Catholics practiced their Catholic faith via Celtic expression, in full communion with Rome and Peter, up until diverse reforms initiated by Rome. You really have no idea at all.
