Niavaran Palace, the residence of
Mohammad Reza Shah
Niavaran Palace was built by the order of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi in the middle of the Qajar garden of Niavaran and its construction was completed in 1967. This palace was built for the purpose of receiving foreign guests, but after the completion of the construction, this building became the residence of the king and queen and their children. One of the reasons for the Shah's relocation from Saadabad Palace was that in Saadabad Palace, all the Pahlavi families, including his siblings, mother, etc., lived there, and as a result, the Shah's family was more independent. This palace, designed by Mr. Mohsen Foroughi, is a combination of traditional Iranian and modern European architecture in two and a half floors. The palace has many parts, including living room, reception hall, dining room, special cinema, bedrooms, dressing room, clothes room, etc. The movable aluminum roof is the entrance hall of the palace, which is opened from the middle and the light and fresh air enters the palace from the roof and you can see the sky .
During the reign of the Pahlavi Dynasty, a new palace named Niavaran was built for the imperial family of Mohammad Reza Shah (1919-1980). The palace was designed in 1958 and completed in 1967. It served a variety of purposes for the imperial court including as a home for the Shah and Empress as well a place to entertain visiting foreign heads of state. On New Year's Eve 1977, the reception and state banquet for US President Jimmy Carter took place here.
The Shah and Empress left basically everything behind when they left Iran in January 1979. All of the peripheral buildings of the Saheb Qaranie, with the exception of the Ahmad Shahi Pavilion, were demolished, and the present-day structures were built to the north of the Saheb Qaranie. The Ahmad Shahi Pavilion was then used as an exhibition centre for presents from world leaders to the Iranian imperial monarchs.
