I have 20 years sim racing experience and 10 years in iRacing and I have to say this video is the perfect advice for new simracers and iracers. Copy Dave's mentality into all your online races and you will do well. This video is so perfect it looked scripted because each car did exactly what was expected of them. Judge the behavior of the other drivers, expect the worst, remember the names of the dangerous guys and the good clean guys. the racing only gets better from there.

The biggest issue with rookie class is guys like the yellow car....
Did what you said and I won my first iRace ever. The leaders wrecked and I tried to give tonnes of space and wound up in the lead on lap one, then just drove in clean air to victory!

You race how I race in real life. Keep it clean, be patient, let them make mistakes.
This is just Racing Intelligence explained. I wish everyone would take a fair and calculated approach like that.
I first watched this video about nine months ago when I was first thinking about getting into iracing. Now that I'm in my third season, I REALLY understand what all you're talking about. Confidence and the correct mind-set are key to driving well in my opinion. I would encourage all Rookies to come back here and rewatch this after several months of racing. Practice with a purpose.
I'm going to send this video to a friend of mine who is struggling to get through the ranks. Really great explanation, thanks!
Great video and perfect demonstration for exactly what you are talking about, I wish I had watched more videos like this when I started Iracing, as someone who only raced AI i I was unprepared for online racing, half the races I got wrecked out by crazy drivers like in the video, only recently I have decided to take the approach in the video :)
I stsrted iRacing this week and had my first race today... 11th to 5th following your strategies. That finish with a pair of solid TT finishes had me out of rookie class in 3 hours. Love your videos Dave... keep‘em coming.
watched this and changed my perspective . got out of rookies in my first week thanks to this video . rookies is a mind set we all fall back into every once and a while . races are an endurance not a sprint to the first corner
Hell yeah man. Well done on this while talking us through it the whole time!! Well done!!
retitle: How to guarantee a p4 from the back of the pack :-) great advice,, will serve you in any class in online racing.
Dave was very consistent lap after lap. Even if you don't have the best lines, knowing your marks and actions and being repeatable is very helpful.
that was brilliant. do more of these commentary videos, great racing!
Great video Dave. Really informative and instructional
Great points. I will definitely use the tips when I start rookies!
Great video. No fluff just straight talking to the point. Subscribed
I went the oval route, but this is basically what I did. I didn't qualify at first, but its always a good thing to do so. I just took my time, and let people pass me. Gave me confidence driving as well.
G'Day and thanks for this. A mate has got me interested in iRacing and this is invaluable advice. Can't wait to get his old G29 so I can start. New Sub!
This is good advice. For me coming from racing only "arcade" racing games on Xbox I was highly inconsistent so I also had to work on that. In games like Forza you only do 3-5 laps and then move onto another circuit in a different car. It really helped my consistency to do lots of practice in a single car and making sure that I was good enough to take part in a race.
Didn't even know you did videos til I saw you on TV in an iRace of some kind. And I didn't know this was your vid, just clicked on it randomly and was like "hey I know this guy!" So watched it, enjoyed it. Your commentary throughout the race was very good. Well done.
Took me too long to realize you had a camera on your feet. Nice double foot!
A very useful walkthrough a rookie race, thanks. Sage advice as always.
When I was going out of Rookies, my tactic was always to start from the pits, catch up to the rest then keep a safe distance so I wouldn't get caught up in their crashes. About half way through you'll be in the top 5. Then the tactic turns to going a little bit closer to stress the guy in front to make a mistake, but avoid getting caught up in his crash. Look for where they struggle, then put pressure on them aproaching that point. Not even once did I attempt a propper overtake. Won several races doing this. But it all feels like cheating. Not a fun way to race.
@Khosumi
4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say cheating. You're definitely just taking advantage of people's egos and their emotions "I'm not going to let that guy through, I want to keep this position, I'll do anything to keep it that way" and just ends up doing a horrible mistake thinking it would work, or they just straight up do something either their car can't handle or they themselves as a driver still don't understand.
Love your videos! I'm getting into sim racing and your channel helps out a lot!

Well, it kinda sounds to me like "drive like a real racing driver" :D
Worked for me, also got me to C class quickly too. I found letting faster drivers through and telling them which side to pass me and when helped too. I also let slower drivers know when and which side I was about to pass on too.
Good video, I race myself and am interested in getting I racing myself. Thanks for the tips I subbed.
Excellent racing psychology at any level really--comparatively speaking.
Good man got out of the rookies in a few hours.thanks man.

I got out of rookie class in 3 races, neat!
I'm just getting into PC car racing as of Jan 2021, after having not really done any racing games since Gran Turismo 3 on the PS2, which I absolutely loved. I've never used a steering wheel nor pedals, but I do drive in real life and I ride a motorbike. So I decided to skip messing around and go straight for the Fanatec CSL Elite +PS4 bundle with the LC pedals. All thanks to a chance encounter with Forza Horizon 4. I'm sure I'll be checking out iRacing et al in no time :-) Can't wait! Just need to figure out how to set up a sofa-seating position, as I don't have room for a full cockpit, not even a folding one. Either that or the sofa will be ejected from the house haha.

IRACING: GET OUT OF ROOKIE CLASS!! Me: i have to do 22 laps!
What Dave doesn't mention is being fast enough to stay behind others waiting for mistakes takes a tonne of practice. I watched this before subscribing to iRacing and assumed all I had to do was cruise around. I was 20 seconds down by lap 2. Still, great mentality to advancing through the licenses.
It would've been good to mention when a car ahead starts to crash, it's likely they won't be there by the time you get there. Also an out of control car is likely to go to the outside of a turn.
how does it work? you use clutch to upshift but you dont use it when you downshift? whats the magic behind this?
Sorry for being out of topic, but what are your graphics settings here? Yours looks like not all settings are ultra and i love it. No fancy reflections. Do you have them turned off for opponent cars or toned down?
Sound advice, I tried of course to gain as many spots as possible...will just hang back and enjoy the view from now :)
After the race do you have to enter pits for your rookie points to add up? I normally just exit.
I'm looking to get into iracing this week. I'm guessing its best to start from the back so i could avoid qualifying, or is it better to do the qualifying laps cleanly for SR but go as slow as possible to start at the back?

How did you get that fancy overlay for the positions and stuff. Is it just a stream over lay or like a mod or something? Great Video btw

Very nice video!! But how do you downshift without using the clutch?
unfortunately I don't have money for iRacing but this helped me much! Thank you!
Great video, where do you get your setups? And what kit are you using?
Just wondering why you use clutch for up shift but not for down shift?
thanks for your video dave. I made it out of rookies in 2 races, even with decent results (p6 and p4) i got +0,29 and +0.79 SR and the instant promotion to Class D :) but now, i dont know how to proceed further. Mazda? Skippy? Bmw 12.0?
Hello, are u using blip clutch? I just starting iracing and i dont get it how this cluthes work thxs
@RhodokTribesman
4 жыл бұрын
He has a manual clutch (you can see it on his foot cam). Auto blip is for if you have a sequential setup such as paddles (because you can't apply throttle inbetween gear changes)
Just finished my first ever race on Iracing. I used the Mazda MX-5. I started 7th of 12 drivers. Got a great start and got up 3rd right away. Sadly someone spun me around so I finished 5th. A few questions: How do I see car damage? How many races until I start seeing my ratings go up or down? I don't have my clutch installed currently - should I let go of the gas when shifting or just let it rev? Thanks in advance.
@OPEK.

You need that clutch man
How many times do you have to race in each track? I just joined i racing.
What overlay is that with the positions and race info?
Best thing to do to get out of rookies is become fast and lead every lap, clean track ahead, clean finish 😉 I don't recommend sticking behind people but trying to win races. Plus it will hurt your top 5 stats or wins. That's what worked for me 8 years ago. Earned my A license in 3 weeks using this technique
@davecamm
4 жыл бұрын
That's all well and good if you're the fastest guy on track. If not you're in trouble 😁
Dave, since you recommended skipping qualifying, I’ve noticed several others are doing the same thing, thus still placing me in the middle of the pack.

This video was brilliant, solid advice, shame that every time I got into practice, qualifying or a race session I just went for it despite the voice in my head saying "slow down, just get to the finish," but it did teach me to let the fastest guys through, then usually one or two of them crash towards the end, this happened often and allowed me to get a couple of podiums when I didn't have the raw pace for it. I managed to get out of rookie class in a day, thanks for your advice, it really helped a lot!
