The commentator wasn't listening too carefully the Ira talking about George recording Pianola rolls. The ones he was referring to would have been made around 1916 or 1917, when $25 would have been nice cash for a budding young songwriter. By the 30s, Gershwin was "already a legend" as Rudy Valley once noted.

The best Gershwin stories undoubtedly come from the great Michael Feinstein, who spent several years working for Ira.
