I repair IR lasers, so I've seen all these issues and pros and cons. The caps on the military Peqs/LA5/UHP are actually just diffusers. If you put it over the illuminator it gives you a very wide flood, good for short range illumination indoors and can be used outdoors as well. The large diffuser that goes over the IR/VIS laser only completely blocks the visible laser, and tames the IR laser so you can have a more precise aiming point. I don't have a lot of experience with the somo gear peq, but I've notice the most common issues are loss of zero and cracking from over tightening of the 1913 mount. Make sure when you mount it, get it hand tight, then use a tool to turn it NO MORE than another 1/2-full turn. If you cannot maintain a zero put a zip tie over it. The grove on the top near the sticker is for a large zip tie, you can also throw another one over the rear.

Assuming you got your PEQ over 6 months ago, I will say that the more recent ones they are pumping out have a wider flood illuminator beam pattern, and the plastic used in the housing is a little more sturdy. Supposedly it's the same as the real PEQ

When I got back to Schofield in 05 we transitioned from Light to Stryker and got a new leadership essentially. We had a buddy team live fire range. I was a 240 gunner. Well in the genius that is a leadership that would have a buddy team live fire range in an Active Infantry battalion that just got back from Iraqs, we had to do it as a gun team. AG and AB had to bound together and the 240 couldn’t open up until after they had bounded. I the pretty, experienced Machine Gunner at that point, got to my position and let the starter belt go from the hip while kneeling. I was hitting a 200m target. My slick sleeve WSL started yelling at me until my slick sleeve BC said he was suprised it was accurate. I was an E4 and had done his job in combat. We had pointed guns without looking down the sights at people for over a year at that point. We were even taught before everyone had a 68 to look over our sights for daytime CQB. With a belt fed 90 percent of the time you were gonna ride the tracers anyways. Most saw engagements were zip ups. 240s were always zip down but I think that was because usually truck mounted. I’m torn on the eye placement. I definitely see the advantage for passive aiming, but we tried that and we could never get it to work with the 68. The mounts were always too low so you had to cant the rifle like you would for a pro mask. Then you had the engagement area issue. If you’re working in a more lit area, than it makes sense to have your dominate eye be the uncovered eye with 14s, the reason is the lit room. Now seriously rural areas were light signature just isn’t going to happen environmentally as well then yeah I’d move to dominant eye.

Only problem encountered was peq15 would turn off after each shot. googled it and solution is to add an oring inside the battery compartment, so will test again soon. (maybe tighten battery cap harder?) Agreed, zero was solid, green laser was good waaaay past point of identification, ir laser and flood also bright enough for waaaay past identification distances. appreciate your channel and content. semper fi.

I have the Holosun LE221-G on my ARs and AKs and I'm looking into NVGs but I'm wondering if you'd recommend sticking with IR or would adding a Thermal option be useful in urban, suburban or wilderness setting? Peq units are obsolete in my opinion. Ukraine is showing that if you’re going up against a force that also has night vision all your peq is going to do is give off your position the moment you use it. It’s just extra weight. You’d be better off getting an IR compatible light and passive aiming.

There’s a time and place for every tool. I also saw that gt vid and those dudes are most likely still running a lam of some sort. They were just making the case that it isn’t like it was/is in the Middle East and the tactics are different because the enemy has similar capability. Any supplemental light runs the risk of giving your position away. I think it’s important that we remember not to use the conflict of today as gospel for the conflict tomorrow. I’m absolutely not selling my units. It’s extremely rare for almost anyone to have nv. Russia is a world power and Ukraine has it on the scale it does because of the U.S.

If the romeo 5 lost it's zero that's bad news for a lot of folks! Being Holosun makes them that rules out one of the best red dots available today. What's left Trijicons RMO/ MRO? (Whatever their dot is) I don't have the money or a place to use that high tech laser but I thought that they had a rangefinder, laser and IR laser/illuminator. This video clears up most questions I would have and for $350 us that's got to be the cheapest laser illuminator there is. It's got to be better than nothing, right? I haven't any NODs but I thought the "Night Vision" had a filter so bright light would be canceled out so you can still see, that would defiantly suck if it "whites out" with every flash. Can't you adjust them so it won't do that? So what the hell do you do if you go into a dark room and they turn on the lights and there's flashes everywhere? Any advantage you had just went away. Thanks for the info from real world experience!

However, the cap on the real thing isn't just a cap, it's a "diffuser" that gives you instant ultra wide beam when its over the spotlight. You can actually take your cap apart, remove the opaque black film, and put in a round bit cut from one of the semi transparent, crinkly/textured looking plastic gallon milk jugs. It will act much like that military diffuser and give you the wide flood you're looking for.

At least it's Coors light, not a bad beer at all. I'd love to send him some local craft grog though.

Ir illuminator on a mil peq is weak. Not really any better than a holosun. Mil laser is cool...if you have friends in space. Steiner or holosun laser, kiji or modlite ir head on a slave dual switch from unity. Best bang for your buck

Not to give you crap buuuuuttt from a CNC guy who does polymer and metal, plastic is brittle and crap polymer like used by Glock etc is highly versatile millable and etc...iys different love the KISS attitude though my NVG is minimalist an IR laser separate light and illuminator Holosun stuff and just keep it simple

Back to the days when James Bond was hip shooting a grease gun. With laser the reverse sling method is King. For around the farm and house, a 3 lb, stockless, bdx57. Ammo is so light it's irrelevant. Good to 200 yards, light trigger, fast trigger, tight shotgun pattern all the way. A fancy 22 mag, with centerfire dependability. So light it fits under a button down. Good firepower for wife, daughters, grandma. An upgrade from the double barrel coach gun.

The somo doesn't have a diffuser, just a cap. I bought an actual diffuser from TNVC and now it floods fine.
