You can solve the SSD issue by using the free Blackmagic camera app which lets you shoot up to 4K 60fps in log using h.265 encoding and record internally to the phone in a folder of your choice. So can shoot everything internally and keep your MagSafe filter holder on, with small file sizes

Actually I tried it but unfortunately the H265 Apple log files can't be rendered in Davinci Resolve on PC (Windows 11 - HEVC codec installed). It's a shame because it seems that the image quality remains very high for 1/10th of the space needed compared with Prores 422. If someone finds out how to fix to this problem, I'd love hearing from you!

I just filmed a quick lil music video on the iPhone 15 Pro Max and I was pretty impressed from ease of use flexibility of the footage in post. I filmed everything in LOG on the Blackmagic app and it took away a lot of that iPhone sharpening and let you preview conversion luts. I do wish that Apple would give us a legit pro interface for the camera. I also got a few of the Samsung usb c thumb drives that don't block MagSafe

@@creativegreatsvisuals I have only used the samsung t5, t7 and the SAMSUNG Type-C USB Flash Drive, 256GB (it’s name on Amazon) I also tried using the samsung evo nvme but it wasn’t compatible. I can’t speak for the G-Drive but I would try anything that is 400 mbs or faster

@@marcandamalia I can’t believe how much damage and love it took. I used it 24/7 and in the shower to watch YT everyday and it is still ticking. 8Plus is the NOKIA of iPhones.

I'm using a SD card reader with SD card and it works perfect.

These problems mentioned are NOT problems, they are inconveniences in a world of conveniences. Work it out

When I got my 15 Pro all set up, THE FIRST THING I did was try Apple Log with the Davinci resolve app...and O...M....G. An image that good....from a cell phone. In 10-bit Color. In ProRes (well, obviously ProRes lol). And using Blackmagic camera app? FORGET IT! Your issue with the large file sizes...use the Blackmagic app - you can shoot in LT and Proxy which helps dramatically. If I shoot internal to the phone, im using LT. I also agree the conversion LUT kinda sucks. The one in Davinci is "OK", but ive just been doing it manually and I prefer the look 10x more. Its more of a workflow, but not THAT much more

You can even shoot Apple Log in H265 :D

Have you tried using a SD card instead of an SSD? It will free up the back of the phone so you can use the MagSafe for something else.

I hear it, I guess the ‘problems’ are the small little things that are very much allowed since it’s still a phone and to even have this kind of capabilities is wild in itself. The last point though, using the BM app, you can have a display LUT whilst filming bro🤟🏾

iPhone 15 Pro Max, 1/2tb storage BlackMagic App, ticks all the boxes, Apple Log, focus Lut, H.265, manual exposure settings. A filter frame mount with vari nd, I use the Ulanzi bracket as handle, rig travels with me in bum bag. All you need. 👍

Micro. SD. Slot. That’s all we need. Cmon, Apple.

Working on a sneaker review I just filmed yesterday on a 15 PM with and without the samsung T7 ssd attached. A 2:42 video clip came out to be 12.57 GB. Moving the footage from the SSD was super fast and transferring from the 15 PM took forever on a 2021 MBP. Thanks YC!

Keep a SSD and and usb cable connected to each other in your pocket. When it's time to record ProRes, just connect the cable to your phone and voila!

Two criticisms: 1. you keep saying the file size is big but is not being specific about exactly how big it is, which is not useful as "big" is very subjective. 2. you overlooked that you don't need a SSD, you can just plug a USB drive to expand the storage.

As helpful a review as I have seen. And I've looked! What is your experience with extended record times. I'll need to roll for at least 15 minutes a pop. Am I safe?

It's good.. for a phone. Don't be mistaken, however.. It is not a tool to replace real cameras. It does not have true depth of field (lacking real aperture blades), it performs poorly in low light, it doesn't have true optical character, the rolling shutter performance is very poor, etc. An iPhone is not a replacement for gear that allows you have manual and creative control as an artistic filmmaker. I'd even go as far as to say that the image it produces is not genuine, with as much AI layering it cocktails in the phone to mimic true optics. It's just a soulless consumer product. Not to mention the experience is not the same as using real gear.

I don't understand why LOG is linked to ProRes. On my Panasonic I can also record in MP4 and log.

How are you shooting the log internally? I thought you had to use external storage?

That's only for 4K 60fps ProRes Log.

You are able to save to an SD card and not just an usbc drive.

What about using an SD card via a usb-c SD card reader? Will it work? I know you'll have something sticking out at the end of the phone but at least it will be smaller and lighter than an ssd drive.

I ordered 1tb natural titanium. Most people don't realize it's still 8bit log apple log I think you can compare it with Sony slog2 8 bit I agree that they over over saturate there image we need that pro camera control from apple.

Random question but what wide aspect ratio do you use to hide the dynamic island on your videos? I know now the 2:1 cuts through the dynamic island

I am honestly torn between buying this new "phone" for $1700.00 when I can get so much in the market of mirrorless cameras for the same $1700.00, in fact a new Panasonic Lumix GH6 is $1619.00 on Amazon as of 10/04/2023. I like shooting in log or raw for video so the ability to have a 4K log shooting device in my pocket is very desirable, but I already shoot to SSD on my GH6. I am not going to pull the trigger on a $1700.00 phone that does not entice me with more features just yet. I am happy to see apple going in this direction but my current 13 ProMax is doing a good enough job for me. I agree you should market an iPhone 15 log conversion lut, you have a good eye that a lot of shooters will be pleased to have access to.

The 24mm f1.78 main sensor, has a 3.45x crop factor compared to a Full frame. So It gives you a 24mm f6.1 FF equivalent. Since you talk about the GH6, it’s like having a 12mm 2.8. The Apple LOG has 13+ stop of DR (Watch Gerald Undone video). I mean : great autofocus, super good dynamic range, beautiful colors, small form factor, great apps, easy to share, etc etc.

i have a 15 pro and im trying to do a simple pan at 24 fps and im not in low lighting scenarios, and the pan looks sooo jittery almost as if i have a bad shutter speed, so i tried filming on the black magic camera app, 1/50 shutter, 24 fps and it still looks like garbage. what am i doing wrong?

Are you shooting handheld? Is so, that's the problem. Most smooth pans on phones are captured on a gimbal. You'll have to stabilize the footage by using a gimbal.

@@rachinc You never mentioned if you're using a gimbal or are shooting handheld. Shooting handheld and on a tripod will result in jittery footage in most cases. A Gimbal is designed exactly for the purpose of smoothing out and stabilizing cell phone footage. A tripod needs a fluid head attachment in order to capture smooth pans. Watch a few cell phone GIMBAL videos. Problem solved.

Will never happen because Apple has been using Sony sensors since 2011. The iPhone4 was the first to use Sony sensors. The iPhone is a Sony camera.

I'm not getting one, although it's tempting because it'd be a great BTS camera for the video production company. I still gotta pass I have 3 cinema cameras (2 mirrorless and 1 real cine camera) that can all shoot amazing footage. My Iphone 12 mini has been a great BTS camera for reels and such. I have never upgraded my iphone unless it literally broke or I see a massive update, I literally have only had 4 iphones, started with the IPhone 5, upgraded to the Iphone 7 when I lost the 5 to water damage then upgrade to the 12 mini when I felt like there was a massive addition which at time was the wide angle lens. Honestly I'd rather wait until the IPhone 20 comes out and buy the 15 when it's much cheaper.

The quality of zoom shoots is what bothers me most. I checked with 2 iphone 15 pro in two different stores. The quality of x3 x5 x10 zoom photos is worse then anything I have iPhone 13 pro, iphone 14 pro max and Samsung s21 ultra. Iphone 15 pro takes considerably worse photos at all zoom levels. I cant understand whats going on there.

8:55 their own Lut literally looks like no one at Apple had any idea what Apple log actually is. Your grading on the other hand looks great. In Resolve things are much better since there is proper support for Apple Log: Rec2020 gamut Apple Log gamma

Also important to know: Filmic Log is a scam. Basically a post-processing filter applied on already baked, heavily oversharpened footage with tons of local tonemapping. Apple Log is the real deal.
