To me the biggest advantage of ProRes is it gets rid of the hyper-sharpened look associated with digital cameras.

If I film in prores can I still edit and upload the video from my iPhone or is it solely for editing on PC software? Could you upload a protea video directly to instagram from the iPhone or would there be no point?

i'd say that the biggest advantage is that even with a fast airdrop connection it will take 1 minute to down load 1 minute of prores 422 hq footage from my iphone. lol

@@Saltytide2424 one thing people should know is that prores files are meant for post-editing, not for direct output. so usually prores files would be edited and converted into desired final format. it would be crazy just to think about it if ppl use prores for direct output, because the files are so large and even an 1TB IPhone could only store up to 450min 1080P/30fps prores videos. And considering IPhone only supports usb2.0, it would be frustrating when you are going to tranfser data...

This is nothing to do with ProRes, it’s the extra sharpening applied by the camera, you can take the ProRes, convert it to H.265 10bit which will look identical at 1/3 of the size.

@@RK1FX (not Abhishek) I bought my first iphone earlier this year after owning several pixels, and earlier google nexus. The iphone has great video and I love the iphone mini form factor, but there are so many irritating things - you can't customise very much. When you try and automate something using 'shortcuts' app you can't avoid a giant notification that you have to dismiss before the automation happens, you aren't even able to dismiss an alarm before it goes off - you have to turn the alarm totally off, and then remember to turn it on later. No haptic feedback - honestly it drives me f****** crazy. However, I'm still using it as I said for the form factor and the video. Man - if only apple would tweak a few things, they would have a great device. However, as soon as Pixel gets some decent video I'll move back straight away. But if you can live with the ios software, it is a well made premium device.

But its still not good looking...i would never use it myself. The point of having bokeh is to distinguish not just the edges of the subject in center focus but every detail that is left on the edge and isnt part of the background. Thats what gives it that layered feel, that there is in fact something closer and also an intricate background.

My impression was exactly the opposite: due to less on-the-fly processing the dynamic range seems to be lower in the ProRes clips (just look at the clipped highlights on hair early in the video). The reason is, that the Standard mode does this realtime HDR effect that all modern smartphones do, resulting in much smoother highlights roll-off. I agree with the rest of your comment though.

if you right click the video you can choose tech specs and you will see 24p timeline. The color grades were not that much so any decent software could do this. He probably used a high bit h264 codec since it's for youtube. Hope that helps even though I'm not the creator. :D EDIT: just saw his LUT pack in the description which is marketed for the resolve, premiere and FCPX, so there ya go. I personally use Resolve but it's just personal preference these days.

I thought Cinematic Mode looked the best in terms of colors at least but some in the comments are saying it looks terrible, not sure what I'm missing. What sucks about ProRes is that it takes up a shit ton of space in a short time.

Theoretically, the iPhone has always been able to shoot standard H264/5 video at significantly higher (400%?) bitrates than standard using custom apps like MoviePro. I wonder whether high bitrate H264 compares favourably to the ProRes?

Can you clarify a bit on how these were shot? Did you shoot the prores footage using manual exposure in the FilMic Pro app, and the standard camera footage using the default camera app with automatic exposure? Or were they both shot in FilMic Pro? Was any kind of post correction done on either sources, or is this straight out of camera?

ProRes def has a better look.... The next question- what version is the best to use- I saw that you were ProResHQ- but my guess is that is overkill for the data an iPhone sensor can generate- I have been using ProResLT - but we really need a comparison between the different ProRes varieties to see where the 'sweet spot' is. HQ is so memory hungry.

Tbf, most of that is because of correct exposure and white balance. On top of that, the prores shots are graded well. So manual settings and a good colour correction/grade will probably give you a very similar result.

@@Kshitijj No, they said in another comment that the prores footage is not edited at all. That IS crazy good quality you can not achieve with the standard file format.
