iPadOS 16 only really works with M1 iPad pros….unfortunate;y….no stage manager…no fullscreen external monitor support….it runs on my 2018 iPad Pro ….just nothing special

My favorite feature is the planned software obsolescence to make more cash, because apparent an 2018 with USB-C 3.1 Gen2 10GB wich can drive up to an 5K display with 60hz is not enough hardware for 16:9 and is stuck with 4:3 Mode. I really liked the iPad somewhat even its crippled to dead by choice of Apple, but this was my last iPad.

Such a disappointment we didn’t get the lock screen improvements on the iPad.

Stage manager is specific to M1 models, which is disappointing to see. I could understand if older models were limited to fewer apps at a time in stage manager, but not having it altogether seems unnecessary. Overall it's a very small update for non-M1 iPads. Edit: Since I'm still getting responses here, they have actually recently added support for certain older iPad Pro models as well in the recent beta. So it's still restricted to only a few models, but it's no longer only M1 models.

What would be the point of that then? Just use Split View. Apple isn't going to just throw in half a feature just so an older device can use half of it.

​@@TechOut The point of stage manager is the whole UI - being able to resize and group windows. That would still be useful even with a lower app limit. But you're right that a limit of 2 apps would be silly, since you can already have 3 apps at once - so clearly it's possible on older models. I've changed the comment to reflect that.

So, two year old devices are now obsolete! So much for long term updates! Hardware locking features such as multitasking is really shitty!

Thanks so much for these videos! It’s nice to have a more palatable way of learning the features. It helps me help my friends explain what’s coming and what will be supported.

I don't like it,cause apple just put stage management only on iPad M1 ,and I'm not happy with it.

For a feature like external monitor support which a lot of iPad users have been waiting for for awhile to limited only to the M models, is a pity. But it makes sense now why they introduced an iPad Air 5 with M1.

Lots of people wanted monitor support for ipad? Wth maybe im a minority then cuz i never ever connected my ipad to a monitor why would i do that? Ipad is a portable device! Id rather have text edit, pro apps, proper file management like finder on ipad. I guess most people just buy ipad and immediately hook it to a monitor and lay it on a table forver huh?

@@archis3 Is more of a laptop thing that u get used to that could carry over to someone's Ipad Pro use. Is nice to have. I haven't owned a Desktop in years but still have a display on my desk in case I feel like plugging in my laptop or Ipad for that extra real estate.

@@archis3 Its 2022 and if I personally spend 2k on a device it should not be limited its tech so technically you should be able to hook up to a external display just like I can technically mirror my Samsung phone to my Samsung TV or I can technically connect My Mpc live 2 over Bluetooth to my Ipad to control My synth apps or I can technically use my Ipad as a external monitor with my Microsoft Surface 4 obviously you're not using your devices to its full potential cause u lack imagination lol

Shame about these features being limited. I understand the monitor feature but now I hear even the multitasking windowed mode is restricted to M1! I only bought my new iPad 8th gen in January 2021, although I love the device, it definitely feels capable to run the multitasking feature as it handles the split view and floating window perfect as it is...

I don't understand the monitor thing at all. I've had budget android tablets that can do DEX on an external monitor at 1440p. This is an arbitrary decision by Apple and has NOTHING to do with hardware.

You never know, sometimes they want people to buy new devices, and sometimes the device genuinely can’t support the feature because of a hardware limitation (could be RAM, gpu, cache size, etc)

Unless you have an M1, sadly this update brings almost nothing new aside from little tweaks. Downgraded from the beta back to 15.6 within a few hours considering how bad battery life is

I am so excited with stage manager for iPad that I am running the developer better on my 12.9 gen 5 iPad Pro for the first time. I obviously couldn’t wait for the public beta. I love it!!!!!

If they could get full blown Mac OS to run on an A12z chip, (they had a developer exclusive Mac mini that ran on A12z) then they probably could get stage manager to run on all iPad Pro models that have A12x and above especially since they have the exact same amount of ram as M1 iPads.

I agree on everything except that m1 iPads have minimum 8gb ram and maximum 16gb and every other ipad wether a12, a12 x or a12z or even a15 and a14 is 4gb or 6gb which 20% less than base m1 iPad Air

My plan was to sell my 12.9 iPad Pro gen 5 if Apple did not release significant updates to multitasking. With stage manager, now I am keeping my iPad for good!

Literally some devices that are less than two years old aren’t getting any of these features

That’s what happens when a company switches from mobile chipset (older and base iPads) to desktop class chipset (M1 iPads). It is quite sad though (especially for old 4th gen iPad Pro and Air users).

Finally weather for iPad!!!

I have installed it and really like having the ability to resize windows finally :)

Thanks for this preliminary overview. It’s making me more anxious to get an Mx iPad Pro. I’m holding out until the next IPad Pro is released, hopefully in the fall and hopefully an M2. Curious, you were mentioning the ram. In another video, you mentioned that you couldn’t get 16g of ram unless you bought the 1 TB of storage model. Is that still true?

i just got my first iPad ever the 5th Gen iPad Air 10.9" with the M1 chip inside so i wondered how the OS is and this video is very helpfull thank you!

I am wondering if it would be possible to add one iPad via sidecar and still move the cursor to a second iPad via continuity. I am considering buying a 12.9 2021 iPad for the reference monitor features alone while still using my 2018 iPad Pro as a third screen and stand alone iPad controlled from the same keyboard and trackpad. I know that I would be able to use it as a stand alone device, but being able to control 3 devices from the same keyboard and trackpad would really be nice.

I am good on stage manager. I use my iPad Pro 2020 to watch stuff on road trips with its mobile data or I’m at work using mobile data and one app. For multitasking there is my MacBook Pro. The iPad is great for taking pictures and typing on the go for my job. It has its place in my life for that I never felt the need to do 4 things at once on my iPad.

Thank god my first ever ipad is ipad pro M1 🤭 Always wanted ipad before but never had the opportunity to afford one…I guess the wait is worth it 😉

Great video! I’m so disappointed in Apple’s “IPadOS 16” when in reality it’s more of an “IPadM1 OS”. I got the IPad Pro 2020 before the M1 came out & was excited with the specs and future updates. The 2020 pro model has so much power & potential, but no real way of showing it.

I was expecting a UI overhaul but wasn't entirely disappointed. They started treating M1 iPads like potential laptops and I like that!

Aaron when you do your video on accessibility see if Voice Control will still work if another application has control of the microphone. Because this has not been possible on iPadOS I had to stop using iPad and go back to macOS where I could be in a zoom meeting but still have control of my device with Voice control. Just hoping the improved multitasking in iPadOS 16 elevates Voice control to a privileged app and not just another app competing for resources.

Glad to see the addition of useful features to the iPads and the direction they are heading. I think it’s a great platform, just need the ability to run more software and do more mac and pc tasks and I believe it would be a decent laptop replacement. If that day comes I will gladly pick up an iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard, until then I will enjoy my iPad mini and carry my laptop with me

The multi window feature being only available on M1 iPads is a let down, an A13 can handle that!

Even if it could and it could handle the CPU part, the RAM limitations, no swap available, no Thunderbolt (USB-C 3.X), no co-processors, 50% less GPU (needed for support of 6K monitors), etc means that the A13 would struggle and be half-baked and probably upset more people than it would please some.

I welcome stage manager but I think the split screen method is ideal for the iPad. I don’t see myself opening multiple windows on the iPad. Maybe if I had an external screen. Or unless had the 12.9 or maybe future 14” ipad

One of my three children is going through a massive Veggietales phase at the moment, so seeing them in your podcast app triggered me 😂 😝

Can't wait till the user beta is available.

Really sad that my 2020 iPad Pro isn’t going to be able to take advantage of the limited updates for iPadOS. I basically just get a weather app and still not even a calculator. Everything else was more exciting than IPadOS for me !

Its really annoying how iphone gets the lockscreen stuff before the ipad. Same happened with app library

The a12z is still a monster, it powered the first arm macos but now no stage manager. Apple, get ur shit together and give all ipad pro users stage manager!!! Hurt I didn’t get stage manager on my 2018 Pro. Still not upgrading 😂. And crazy Craig I believe said the Weather app hasn’t been coming until they could create one that really worked for iPad and it’s just enlarged from the iPhone mostly.

While I personally didn’t have too much use for Stage Manager since I barely need to use the split screen on my iPad 9 as it is, it is sad seeing that people who would’ve used it can’t. I’m just hoping that whenever Apple releases iPadOS 16 that we all at least get the Lock Screen customization feature. It seems like such an odd thing to keep iPhone exclusive. Otherwise, the only change Apple is really giving it’s non M1 iPad users is basically just the Weather app, which is pretty underwhelming.

I wonder which features my Mini 5 will get. Also, I love NF and Veggie Tales as well.

Check in with shortcuts is a great feature in shortcuts now.

Nice demo! Does video play in full screen on the external monitor? I presume if you have a USB-C to HDMI cable you can plug it into a TV to watch content full screen? Surprised no one is mentioning this as a feature tbh.

Not sure, but I’ve been able to do this since iOS 14 with the app “infuse” Can run almost any video file (including 4k hdr, and surround sound) in full screen with an hdmi cable

I’ve had my iPad for 3 years and I just discovered a new feature not sure if it’s iPadOS 16 or it’s been there ever since. So aside from the text can be selected on a photo, I accidentally dragged a cut out of my picture. Tap and hold on the head or near the head of the subject until ipad scans it and it will cut it out removing the background. It was awesome I was so amazed like a kid. Lmao

It's very disappointing that Stage manager only came to M1 iPads! I bought a iPad 9 last month and was expecting this on iPad 9 although I think A13 is capable of handling multiple windowed apps at once!

Any monitor will work with an iPad if you get an adapter, Anker makes quality ones! I got their like 8-in-1 USB adapter and it works really well and has HDMI 2.0 supporting 4K 60, but you could get a cheaper model given you probably won't need 4K. Personally, I use a Dell U2719C monitor with my MacBook but it works great with my iPad, I bought it brand new but given it's 2-3 years old now, a used one would be cheaper. I'd recommend looking on various seller's websites to see if there's anything in your price range but also checking out the used market.

Hi Aaron, are you using a different microphone or did you tweak your equaliser settings differently? Sounds like a low pass filter has been placed over your voice; prefer it when your voice sounds brighter.

It seems that my ipad pro 2020 only gets a new lock screen with ipados 16. So disappointing and I’m feeling that my ipad is already outdated though it’s released only two years ago.

One step closer to having the Calculator app.

The iOS 16 beta has been very very stable for me on the 13 pro, compared to previous early betas and compared to what everyone said about it being a very unstable update. However, outside of the changed lockscreen and some cool iMessage features, this is another small update which is probably why it’s been pretty stable on beta 1

My iPad Pro 3rd Gen may be a little old now but it's still a very capable device so I'm really disappointed the best features are only for M1. Plugging my iPad into my TV and getting that horrible box mirror display is easily the worst thing about the iPad for me. I feel the external display, even in a limited capacity, should at the least be coming to all Pro models.

why are talking about this when you not supprorted for ipad os 16 And you have a bit of a very old ipad.

Please make an in-depth review of Stage Manager, answering as many questions as you can from say r/iPadPro about this. I for one, would like to see exactly how much you can resize and reposition windows to achieve different layouts (e.g. 4 non-overlapping windows in 4 quadrants) and what the limitations are. Thank you.

Good note for non M1-2 chips! It is clear that they are listening to our views and comment, they are unlocking their potentials. Sure short, it will take at least 2 year-we are talking about iPad OS 18 or 19 there’s big coming. Better we stick around with our non M1 and polish their OS and bake it as per our promises and fill the gap then upgrade!
