iPad Mini vs iPad Pro: Why Mini Wins

I was hesitant to purchase the iPad mini because of all the hate it received upon launch. From jelly scrolling to having too much spacing on the sides, it seemed like this product was doomed. Thank goodness I gave it a shot, because the iPad mini has quickly replaced my iPad Pro as my favorite Apple tablet ever released.
In this video I explain why I think the mini is a better option than the pro for many users out there.
LINKS:
• iPad mini 6 - amzn.to/42K1AtQ
• My preferred iPad mini 6 Case (featured in this video): amzn.to/3BdNMMo
• The best BUDGET Apple Pencil knockoff that I use: amzn.to/44Gq8pj
NOTE: I realize my iPad Pro is the 2nd generation and a lot has changed since that tablet was released. There are now M1 and M2 iPads out there in the wild, but I still argue that with all that power, I'm still not sure exactly WHAT you're doing with the iPad Pro that requires all that power. I tried really hard to use the iPad Pro as a main device for editing photos, video and other content, but found myself going back to my laptop/desktop again and again. The mini does more of what I like it to do at a fraction of the price of the iPad Pro, hence this argument.

Ummm…. You can do more than “Basic stuff” on the iPad mini. I travel a lot and bring 2 iPhones, battery packs and the mini. I edit videos and photos on the device for clients. Before it was the Pro 12.9, 2 digital cameras, and other heavy, thief attraction gear. I can even, when bored, go on to my CAD program and design a quick building, or read a novel. Best iPad ever, hands down.

I agree with everything this guy said. I just got an iPad mini a week ago and I am extremely pleased with it. I can do on it everything I can do on my iPad Pro 11. I’m here to tell you the mini is a small and powerful version of the iPad Air. As for the “jelly” scrolling, well I can’t see it. And besides, who the hell is reading content on the screen when you’re scrolling that fast anyway? I hear all these critics complain that the screen isn’t that good outdoors in direct sunlight. Well neither is my iPad Pro. Many of the reviews I’ve watched complain that when you use the keyboard in the landscape mode it takes up half the screen. Well guess what. My iPad Pro does the same thing. They complain that the quality of the screen is not that good. You kidding me? I find it just as clear and sharp as an iPad Air and my iPad Pro 11. The speakers sound just fine for a smaller device. The battery life is just about as good as my iPad Pro 11 simply because I don’t do any gaming and I close out any programs running in the background when I’m done using them. The mini is extremely portable and easy to hold and take notes. If I have any complaint, it would be that some of the text on some websites and on my widget page is a little tiny for my aging eyes. I use both my mini and iPad Pro the same way. Mostly consumption of content such as KZread, texting, surfing, streaming other content such as Netflix, email, and occasional letter writing. I’m not a gamer and I’m not an architect or a movie producer so why do I need an iPad Pro? Think I’ll be selling my pro.

I must’ve missed the conversion from Ark Overload but I completely agree with just about all of your points on the sixth generation Mini. I had been considering an upgrade to an iPad Pro for quite a while and ultimately went instead for this Mini too a few months ago…and I love it. Realistically, my only criticism of it is that you have to jump from a 64 gb base model straight to a 256 gb one (which I did) and for quite a premium too. The base model should be 128 gb. Excellent video. Nicely done.

The general usability of the mini is so much better than the big and heavy pro. Nobody ever ‘needs’ and ipad so its down to convenience and use, and I havent come across anything yet the mini wont do that the pro can - no brainer choice in my opinion.

The iPad Mini 6 is the first mini that wasn’t gimped, in fact,it was actually better than the larger option (a15 chip vs a14) at launch! Back in the early days of iPad mini, this really put me off, because the size has always been perfect, so easy to grab and use for everyting, but the cut coners on specs and features put me off the first 4 models! 5 was the first that was acceptable spec-wise, and the 6 was actually incredible!

A few years ago I’d think this was silly. My main use for my iPad Pro was laptop replacement which served me well for school, photo and video editing. I needed more eventually so purchased a MacBook Pro to be the main work horse as the iPad wasn’t really that laptop replacement I was looking for. Eventually the pro downgraded to a glorified media device and soon realized how annoying it was as it was a bit too big and heavy for this purpose alone. Decided to try the idea of using the mini and it is perfect for my needs. I don’t use it for photo or video editing as that’s not the purpose, however I did give it a test and it’s great, not the greatest for video but it works. Will be selling the pro at some point. Great video! 😊👍

Interesting video, really made me give the mini a serious look for once. I love the form factor and how you share you put it to use. And since you asked... I have a 12.9 iPad Pro from 2020 with 256gb and use it daily as an Art Director/Illustrator/Designer. It's mainly the larger screen size along with the portability that make it a win for me. Procreate is open most of the time, but I also use it for admin and communications work as I draw, notate, and more. I also use Figma and some light video editing. I'd say, for my use case, it's irreplaceable-but it's not so much about power or features. The 11 and mini don't have the screen real estate I'd need to do what I do. And my Macbook obviously doesn't have touch/Pencil capability. So the fact that the Pro has larger screen + Pencil/touch + app access + power all combine to work best for me. Last thing: it really is a great media/content consumption tool, too. All that said, I realize that I'm in a small minority of iPad users and the Pro isn't for everyone.

Watching this on 12.9 1TB M1 iPad Pro with MagicKeyboard. It replaced my MacBook Pro after that killed itself. Yeah, Video editing is more than possible on that kinda iPad. I just don’t use it very often for that anymore, for some other reasons too. Light video, photo, text, numbers, pdf editing. KZread, Prime video, TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, Newsreading. Surely the display and its size is nice to have, that full keyboard experience too. But its just overkill for what i do with it. And for note taking with or without pencil its simply not manageable. Size and weight is in the way. For transport from work to home and back on the daily too. And its just €3000 I’m carrying with me all the time, under the arm or in a bag. Nah, I’m going to get an iPad mini as soon as possible. The big one may stay at work as a primary till a MacBook/iMac is possible. But even for the occasional press-photos/-videos I have to edit and send from on the go the mini will be far enough. Much better even for its size and weight.

I've tried to restrict myself to only reasons that I can ACTUALLY slot into my workflow, not just cool-sounding metrics. So far, that's storage size and screen size, nothing else that I can think of. I do a lot of amateur-level sketching, so it would be nice to have a big screen, but the 11" is about as much as I need. So maybe an Air. Dunno - I'll probably buy something later this year, but there's no rush. Not while I am so thoroughly pleased with my Mini!

I can’t speak for the mini….I’m watching this video because I’m thinking about buying one to serve as a more functional Kindle. I do have the cellular version of the 11” iPad Pro however. Depends on your use, like everything. I went cellular, because at the time I didn’t have internet at my home, or cable, etc etc. Any and all of the limited content I watched was done via my iPhone usually on KZread with occasion Netflix streaming. It made more sense to me to add an extra $10 data plan onto my phone bill than it did to pay $50+ per month for home internet. The small charge was also worth not having to hotspot my iPad to my phone anytime I wanted to use it. Likewise, when traveling (the other thing I bought the iPad for) I honestly don’t trust the security of public wifi. If I wanted my iPad to be useful in that regard it needed cellular. I finally broke down and got Wi-Fi at home. I’ll likely buy an iPad mini with cellular, switch the SIM card from my Pro to the Mini, and use my pro at home for photo editing while using the more handy/portable mini for activity outside the house. Likewise for data I’ll likely go for 256. It’s a reasonable increase in price (only $150), it can’t be expanded after the fact, it never hurts to have too much storage, higher storage models tend to “age” better, and if I ever sell it it’s a more attractive feature to have. Basically, “premium” models have more staying power and more flexibility than the basic versions. If all you’re doing is taking the iPad from home to work (if even that much) and you’re not doing anything critical/sensitive where you’re worried about data theft I’d probably stick with just the Wi-Fi though.

Not sure about a conversation so here goes… the 12.9 iPad Pro will have you engaged for HOURS on end. I literally move back and forth to my iPhone simply because it is water resistant (peace of mind). I find my self moving around with the iPad Pro 12.9 in my hand and everything. The dang thing always appears glued to me. It charges quick so it’s never dead, and I pass a MacBook charger once every few days with light use. Let’s put it this way, if the iPad Pro 12.9 with magic keyboard was water resistance Apple better make sure it can work in zero gravity, survive contact with molten rock, and out dive the Mariana Trench because the 12.9 inch iPad Pro is so much more when compared to the mini. Thank you for such a thoughtful video. I'm better iPad Air 5 or iPad Mini 6 (both with 256 GB). I want to use the tablet for the reasons you express but also as part of a teleprompter to read a script and to then edit 1080 videos. Do you think it would be better with iPad Air 5 or would iPad Mini 6 be more than enough without any disadvantages? Thank you for helping me understand more what would be more convenient.

There should be a Ipad Mini Pro or Ipad Mini 7 with M2/M3 chip in it (on par with next gen Ipad Air) Ipad Pro mini should have Oled screen , 16GB Ram and M2 or even M3 chip, face ID, and full spec camera on the back with Lidar etc. Regular Ipad mini should be on par with Ipad Air

@@arkoverload the latest hardware is the only to support the hovering cursor which a lot of artist love and prefer from Wacom pen displays because of this feature. I personally prefer the pro or 12.9 for Drawing because they are sketchbook size. Though I am seriously considering picking up a mini iPad and mini phone so I have a much more portable drawing pad on the go. And then there would be zero need for a larger iPhone.

Enjoy your iPad mini. But please, for the love of God, stop making fun of those of us who need to use our larger iPad’s camera viewing finder to take pictures. We are NOT duffuses . We are people who, for whatever reason are using the camera on our very expensive devices that we paid for. I am afraid that people who, for want of a better reason have decided something is uncool to do, and don’t use what they paid for, are the ones who look rather like the fool…. Stop trying to be cool and use what you paid so much for.

My feeling exactly! So tired of ppl with their little inserts of how it's not appropriate to use the camera on this size or that size tablet. Kindly go f yourself I always think. How I use my device is none of of theirs or anyone else's business..and not using it just cos it's not as big as a phone..is simply idiotic.

I bought an iPad Mini Cellular 8 years ago. I do not browse with it - I'm an adult so I use my 14" laptop to browse and an Apple TV for viewing. After 8 years of ownership, I use my Mini almost exclusively when I "TRAVEL" - to do the following - with % used (give or take): Otherwise it sits in a drawer. #1- as a GPS unit in my vehicles - the best GPS ever (70%) #2 - as a Sidecar or mirror screen to view video paired with a M2 MBA (25%) #3 - as an eReader (4%) #4 - the odd miscellaneous task (1%) Since it is on its last leg (but not dead) - I will likely buy the new Mini 7 when it comes out later this year. BTW I would 'NEVER" buy any bigger iPad as the Mini is simply a complimentary device.

The iPad lineup has always been solid, and in my opinion, there’s no real “duds” so using a link for the last 8 years is not a surprise to me. I’d argue that the convenience of browsing and watching content on one device supersedes a better experience on Apple TV (where I need to go to a dedicated room) or browse on a laptop. For me, my laptop is mainly for intensive tasks like video editing and audio production. The mini and iPad Pro are great for note taking, browsing, KZread and simple design like using canva.
