Rule 1 when greasing anything is to wipe the end of zerk fitting with rag or your finger tip so you don't force any dirt or grit in fitting that can clog ball or grease channel.

New zerk fittings don't always do the trick!!! I've had a u-joint on a truck that grease would only come out 2 sides of the joint. I took it apart and found the 2 opposing sides of the U-joint trunion clogged with hard grease, and dry needle bearings in the caps. I cleaned every thing out with some poky bits and regreased everything and BAM!!! like new!!! The impact effect of using a hammer to move light oil very quickly to clean out passages makes perfect sense, and on a lot of different applications besides u-joints. Thumbs up!!!

Fitting wouldn't take grease on my lower ball joint today. Just heated the top of the joint and the fitting with a small handheld torch. Worked right away

A manual grease gun can produce up to 10,000 psi. If you take short strokes on the gun (1/4 strokes on the lever), you can get up to that pressure. If you cant clean it out with that pressure, you probably have a passage that is blocked and should rotate the shaft (on the bucket of a loader for example) and see that allows the passage to take grease. If you are on a bearing that is sealed or has a boot (ball joint), be careful using something like this device or using a lot of pressure with the grease gun. You will blow the seal and can actually dismount the bearing.

Heat the area / fitting with a propane torch. Heat will sofen old grease and has worked every time for me.

I own one of these gadgets. Over the years I have yet to get it to work once. Did break a few zerks though. Complete waste of $!!!

I would just change the fitting much cheaper

If your mechanical component is all clogged up with hardened old grease, what the hell good is changing the zerk fitting???
