Cool stuff, but you still need to swap to maps manually if you receive a call during navigation. They should implement the call menu in overlay with maps to be efficient.

Agreed! This is the most annoying thing in CarPlay. My screen isn’t touch, so I have to use the scroll wheel and navigate back to maps.

I read that its the cars other occupants can stream Spotify through it but beware you can only use this feature if the driver has a paid Apple Music Subscription. Big fail on Apple's part there

As @qm7996 already stated, you need an Apple Music subscription on the main phone to get the SharePlay feature in the first place. But also limiting, the people joining in can only select music from _your_ phone (in practice almost anything, given an Apple Music subscription), not whatever the the phone joining might have access to.

I figured out of some things for Apple Car Play in my 2020 Ford Escape SE in black. I’m using the same screen, too.

Latest Generation MBUX supports full screen CarPlay 🤓 MBUX NTG 6 (when you say Hey Mercedes it has lines for the voice assistant) This has a cropped version of CarPlay because there are multiple screen sizes, 7” and 10.25” MBUX NTG 7 (when you say Hey Mercedes, it has sparkles for the voice assistant) This version supports full screen CarPlay as you cannot get it in 7” it’s only available in the full 10.25 screen size so no cropped CarPlay and it’s Wireless too!

Just download multiple maps that overlap by some margin. You gotta stop sometime for fuel/food/rest and you can just select whichever offline map works best for your next trip segment. Not completely seamless, but about as easy peasyas it gets for now.

Great video! 😃How do you get CarPlay to fill the whole screen? On the native screen of my Mercedes A Class AMG '21 it fills the screen but when CarPlay launches it cuts off a section on the left side... Any ideas?

The reason is because MBUX (also known as NTG 6) on Mercedes is available in two screen sizes, 7” & 10.25”. When designing and coding I’m led to believe that you can only choose one (to maintain compatibility) for everything. So to make sure it works on all models, Mercedes of course had to go with the 7” version, which is perfect for 7” owners but of course leads to a cropped experience if you have a 10.25” screen. NTG 7 found in some new cars have higher faster processors and have one screen size leading to a full screen experience on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Hope that explains potentially why it’s like that on some cars!

That’s interesting to know that it’s a MBUX issue, not an Apple one. I was waiting for this update to fix it on my GLC screen. I no longer use CarPlay because the screen looks ridiculous with the blank sides. It seriously looks like a GUI error, something you’d find in vehicles from much cheaper manufacturers.

Others have had the same before, my partner had a Mini Cooper, cropped on CarPlay because you could order it with two screen sizes but the newer one is now full screen. I know there are others too

It’s because it’s the latest generation multimedia system. MBUX NTG 7 is only available in one screen size. MBUX NTG 6 the previous one is available on two screen sizes so CarPlay is cropped slightly.

PERFECT VIDEO! I was hoping for next gen Apple CarPlay. I am sad that MB proclaimed it unlikely for them to implement it. They were mentioned as one of the cooperating car manufactures for next gen Apple car play during last year Apple conference. It seems to me that Apple wants us to forget about it. MBUX maps are so unusable 😢. They are not able to to keep up with realtime road closures update of WAZE and others. I am looking FW that day when car manufactures realizes that they should give up and enable full screen Apple next/gen CarPlay. Could you make video about that? Thank you.

Hi Nick. I note that on MBUX on my EQB that the Car Play screen is not wide screen like the one in your video. On either side of my Car Play screen I have the temperatures etc. Is there a setting I am not using?

@Steven-ez1ng sadly it’s because MBUX gen 1 or NTG 6 is available in two screen sizes. So for it to work on all of them it has to the 7” version. The newer generation multimedia system is only available in one screen size so isn’t cropped.

The one shown in the video is for Apple Music, Spotify’s had Crossfade for quite a while under Settings and then Playback on their app. Not sure about the KZread Music app 🤓

It was weird, I thought your maps showed you were near Goch Way - which is about a couple of blocks where I live - then I scrolled back and you did film this in Andover! Hahaha! Andover represent! :D

Had a Pizza Express that night too, it was great 👍🏼 Never been to Andover before but the lakes were beautiful (where I filmed the start and the end)

Yes I also find it is the greatest pain ! And I can’t believe MB can’t tweak its software to sense the screen size and would be surprised it it really impacted the processing significantly etc I just don’t use car play - also because I have to plug it in .. I can use MB system and for music at least w Bluetooth connection I can ask Siri via my watch to play xx etc music. Not a premium work around. But it works.

Yes I wish it was full screen too. It’s not just Mercedes there are other car manufacturers too. My partner had a Mini, the previous one it was cropped because it was available in two screen sizes and the new one it’s full screen. CarPlay can’t natively scale so it depends on what screen sizes are on offer when ordering from new. I wish it was full screen for everyone!

Running a KZread Channel full time requires stable apps and programs! 😅😅 Phones are very complex and of course it can vary but…I am almost close to saying this is the most stable version of iOS I’ve ever seen 👍🏼 Haven’t had any issues whatsoever so far! 🤞🏼🤞🏼

Best thing to do is make sure you’re running th latest versions of everything and all of your settings are enabled to allow what’s app to take calls through Apple’s (I think it’s called PhoneKit). iOS 17 does support Wireless CarPlay so it depends on the car. You’ll have to check with the manufacturer to see if your model supports it 🤓

But you can’t send internet to the car from your phone. There’s nothing on the screen you can use really.

Is there any way to turn up the volume on music etc in play podcasts and it’s very difficult to hear on the motorway, but if i play via Bluetooth it’s fine and loud

You should just be able to turn it up, there aren’t any additional volume controls in CarPlay for that. What model of car do you have and what year?

Hi @Nick! It’s just me or did you have a bit stretched Apple Car Play? I think your side bars are bit more narrow than in my 2021 CLA (ofc 10.25 inch screen)

Sadly not all cars can do full screen CarPlay. There are other manufacturers who have come across the same before. The reason is because MBUX (also known as NTG 6) on Mercedes is available in two screen sizes, 7” & 10.25”. When designing and coding I’m led to believe that you can only choose one (to maintain compatibility) for everything. So to make sure it works on all models, Mercedes of course had to go with the 7” version, which is perfect for 7” owners but of course leads to a cropped experience if you have a 10.25” screen. NTG 7 found in some new cars have higher faster processors and have one screen size leading to a full screen experience on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Hope that explains potentially why it’s like that on some cars!

​@@npoleary yes yes, I'm fully aware why it's done like this. But my question was about the side bars in your movie. You sits in you A-Class with NTG 6, but cropped side bars are more narrow than in my CLA 2021 which uses also NTG 6. So I'm bit confused, that's all. Is it possible it's still depends on model? In fact, CLA it's A-Class with bigger boot (I believe I used the correct term for this part of the car :D )

@karolsado2582 it’s the facelift A-Class which has the new generation MBUX with NTG 7. It features wireless CarPlay and most importantly full screen CarPlay too.

Hello! Thanks for the great info! Are you having any trouble getting Apple Maps going into night mode? Mine will not so it blinds you at night do matter how far you have the brightness turned down. I’ve tried everything I know to do. I have to use Google maps at night for now. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s controlled using your iOS settings Head to: Settings Display & Brightness Make sure it’s set to “Automatic”

@@npoleary okay, the screen went to night mode on the phone but not on my CarPlay radio. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Google Maps works right but Apple Maps stays in day mode on my radio even though it’s in night mode on my iPhone. No setting to change it in the radio settings either. Also checked in the CarPlay settings on my phone… guess there’s an issue with my radio. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Have you unpaired your phone reconnected it back up? I’d also suggest deleting the CarPlay settings too. “Settings” “CarPlay” “General” on your phone There is a settings button on CarPlay too which as light mode and dark mode buttons

Hi! Great video but I have a question. Does SharePlay automatically show up in CarPlay after updating my iPhone or do I have to turn it on somewhere? Because that new SharePlay icon/button does not show up on my vehicle’s screen. Do I have to have a subscription to Apple Music for SharePlay to work?

@@npoleary Hey, thanks for the reply. I don’t think there is a free tier. All I have is all my personal music that I’ve either uploaded or purchased on the old iTunes. You can do a free 7 day trial though.

Ah I see that makes sense When I did some DJing years ago (yes I actually did 😅) I did own all of my music exactly the way you said. Now I’ve gone down the subscription route, which to be fair having 100 million songs for £11 a month is pretty cool

Does share play works with Spotify? If doesn’t, is there any chance of getting it soon?

Sadly no it’s an Apple Music feature so I doubt they’ll roll it out to others. It’s a selling point to use that instead. Bear in mind Apple Music vs Spotify, they all have pros and cons. If you’re more used to one over the other, I’d stick with that to be honest 👍🏼

SharePlay is gonna be huge on road-trips 🙌🏾

Have they resolved the resolution problem in Mercedes MBUX? Currently Waze is displaying in 4:3 instead of 16:9, adding black bars on each side of the display.

Mine too! Always use CarPlay! Battery level for the phone? Or the car? Battery level does appear on the right I’ve noticed if you’re using Wireless. If it’s wired CarPlay then it won’t show at all

I have a 2020 4runner and to use Carplay, I must be plugged in to the USB; it doesn't recoginze wirelessly. So, I assume #5, Shareplay will not work in my car?

Yeah Sharplay just depends on your phone and iOS version. If it’s plugged in it will still work. SharePlay just basically give a virtual aux lead for your passengers to use 🤓 You do need Apple Music though

Hi Nick, from your video compared to the previous version, Apple Car Play seems to use a larger portion of the screen, I also own a Mercedes with MBUX and extended screen. Can you confirm this for me? The black side bands where the temperature of the two zones used to be are no longer there! Thank you

@gianlucascapolo3890 no it’s down to car manufacturer. This is the only A-Class I’ve owned on my channel, it’s the new facelift / new generation that I featured in a few videos ago. Any model prior to this will have a cropped screen because of the two screen sizes.

I changed back to ‘Hey Siri’ in the settings after using just the word ‘Siri’ for a couple of weeks. Too many false triggerings of Siri in the new set up, something I’d really wanted for a long time….until I started using it 😂 I now absolutely see why ‘Hey’ was used. Much better.

Ive added an apple play/android auto screen to my merc. The older infotainment screen was small and no apple car play. I wish, however there was a quick way to switch aux on/off ! I like to listen to the radio and if my phone rings while im listening to the radio I get no sound unless I go to original car settings and change it in the sound settings…by which time ive missed the call. Any workaround?

I guess it depends on what you’ve installed? This doesn’t sound like a manufacturer installation so what have you added? Another screen or replaced the screen in the car? What’s the make of the screen / model and year of car?

I LOVE crossfade.

How do I go about getting widescreen/full screen CarPlay on my car. It is a shame that CarPlay only uses half the screen.

Latest Generation supports full screen CarPlay 🤓 MBUX NTG 6 (when you say Hey Mercedes it has lines for the voice assistant) This has a cropped version of CarPlay because there are multiple screen sizes, 7” and 10.25” MBUX NTG 7 (when you say Hey Mercedes, it has sparkles for the voice assistant) This version supports full screen CarPlay as you cannot get it in 7” it’s only available in the full 10.25 screen size so no cropped CarPlay and it’s Wireless too!

Is car share only for that driving session, or does it remember people in future sessions?

Per driving session It’s kind of like just sharing an AUX cable so you need to connect it up each time 🤓

So with this, you’d just use the device buttons on thing you’ve connected it to. So if it’s the car, use the volume controls on the car either on the steering wheel or central area.

I have a 3 month old Cla is there anyway to increase the size of the CarPlay display as it’s cropped

Hi Nick, Not closely related to this video, however, how about a video on the ChatGPT Beta integration into MBUX? I’ve wanted to try it however the ‘invalidate your warranty’ bit in the license agreement is a little scary. Have you tried and tested it?

Hi Nick! I hope you get this message & thanks for the video. Quick question, big flaw with Apple Maps, I’m using Ford sync 3 which means I have to plug in using USB to get CarPlay. While using Apple Maps my car display screen will show the map while me iPhone screen will show the time/distance to turnings etc. Unfortunately my iPhone screen will go dark after a few minutes forcing me to having to touch it to wake the screen up, this does not happen with google maps which forces the screen to stay on. I can understand this happening to save battery but as I’m plugged in via usb my iPhone is getting charged at the same time anyway. What are your thoughts on this? Any solution to keep the screen on? Google maps do, why not Apple Maps? Very frustrating thx G

Hey! Sorry little confused When you use CarPlay, all functionality should go to the car’s screen? It sounded like you said some elements are still on the phone? CarPlay is in place so that you don’t need to touch your phone while driving.

@@npoleary Hi I’m talking about Apple Maps…..try navigating with Apple Maps you will see turning points displayed on your iPhone & the main map on your display, after a few minutes your iPhone display will go off. Then try navigating with google maps you will get the same functionality on your iPhone & main display except your iPhone display will not shut down after a few minutes. I hope that’s clear:)

Oh I see but turning directions appear on the car’s display too though? The way what you described would be down to what the app developer has decided to do for Google Maps. The only way for iOS maps to do it would be to change the whole phone setting. Settings Display & Brightness Auto-lock Set to Never Hope that helps!

@@npoleary I understand, it is a bit annoying that you have to turn auto lock off while using Apple Maps & have to do nothing while using google maps….I just wandered if you were aware of this issue & if there was a setting on Apple Maps I was missing….keep mobile device screen on/off for instance….anyway many thanks for your help & replying to my messages:)

I've been using iOS 17 for a couple months now on my iPhone 12 mini and LOVE the updates to CarPlay, specially offline Maps and SharePlay. My new iPhone 15 Pro Max Black Titanium gets here today, so now I have to get a USB A to USB C cable in order to use CarPlay in my vehicle.

Haha I bought an iPhone to specifically make this video so it’s not the phone I use day to day. I use my main phone a lot for replying to comments, managing socials and all sorts so need a reliable iOS. I will defo upgrade to iOS 17 on the main but yeah that QR code could be my iCloud account music playlist! 😂 Don’t need songs being added randomly to my car 😂 Thank you again 🙏🙏🙏

so still no 4th quick launch icon? I use Maps, Phone, Messages and Music--why do they only have three quick launch icons so one has to be left off?!?!

3:05 I’m still on ios 16 with an iPhone 13 Pro and in my Vauxhall Corsa, you just say, “Hey Siri” without the need to press any buttons.

Nope all CarPlay 🤓 will work on any phone that updates to iOS 17. Cars only show the content as CarPlay is your phone so it doesn’t matter on the manufacture.

I trued to use Apple Maps but living in Dallas it just isn’t fast enough if I miss a turn or something it takes forever to update or reroute

There can be a slight delay especially if you use it over Wireless. Have you got it wired?

I have a question Why when my friend opens his AirPods box it’s picked up in my iPhone Is it a general problem or does it have a solution? And is this problem in AirTag too?

It’s probably because he’s connected to it before. As long as the phone isn’t signed in to the iCloud account, check Settings and then Bluetooth. Have a look for the AirPods in there on your friends phone and delete them if you don’t want that to happen
