Ventilation holes for the mounting bolts, very forward thinking! That's why you get paid the big bucks! 👍😉🤣
So, that's what a mexican speed handle (adjustable) wrench is used for. Wish my old A&P teacher was still around so I could show him.
Battery isolator switch near the battery, so you can leave the winch turned on all the time, and simply turn on the power when needed. Also connect the remote control cable to the winch, and leave the end in the engine compartment, sealed up in a plastic bag, so that you can simply open the bag and use it if needed. Small cable tie to hold bag on cable, and another small easily broken one holding to something firm. that will keep you from needing to go dig in the dirt for the winch when needed, and also no problems with cables chafing, or long standing making the battery flat.

Great ideas😎 you could if there's room somewhere fix a plastic lunchbox that's big enough to hold the cable and the controller with a slot in it under there somewhere. Maybe some brush strip over the slot to stop crud and mice making nests.

Nice! Another small problem , if the winch lead comes out and has to go at any angle other than straight ahead, the cable tension will put sideways pressure on the bumper. The fairlead helps spread that but its only held on by two bolts.
Nice piece of CAD to create those front horn template strengtheners, Steve. I just love Cardboard Aided Design. ;-)
Bolt ventilation cracked me up! Love your humour Steve. Missing the opening of the shop from when you were doing the walls 😂
I’ve drilled many an extra vent hole😂😂😂. I’m with you guys in that I love the stock look. Loving the series , thanks. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
I have to take my hat off to you Steve on your machine shop you have at hand. A real nice collection of machining tools for sure. .
Great project, Steve, Thank you. Also, at 20:08, thanks for emphasising the importance of Nut Ventilation, a subject, sadly, too often neglected. I think we will now all sleep happier in our beds :-).
I would do what a previous commenter said about an battery isolator but with a power switch in the cab, and keep the remote in the glove box.
For a bit easier control, use a battery switch under the hood to turn the main power to the winch on/off. That way you lust leave the power switch on the winch on. Plus with a winch you generally want to run the engine while pulling so it's no issue to pop the hood (plus it protects the glass if the line ever snaps) For the remote grab a smaller tool box or ammo can, put the remote and a couple spare batteries in there toss the remote in a heavy sock, keeps it from getting so beat up. plus the box lets you store a recovery strap or sling so all the winch stuff stays together.

yeah i would add a main shutoff switch too...and leave it switched on at winch....always better to make it safer and easier to use.. a remote switch is simple to add on and while you gotta reach under it still ( i'm sure that could be done too with some linkage or solenoids ) to engage it...it will get dirty and wet under there...
I used to build 4x4's in the '80s. I'd fabricate rough country bumpers, tow hitches, roll bars, winch mounts and snowplows, etc. It may be a bit anal but when I drilled or burned a hole in the wrong place, I would fill it back in with weld, grind it flat, and stress relieve it. If someone was paying for it, they deserved a top-notch job and I just felt better about my work when I took no shortcuts. I'm looking forward to you doing the engine. I love those old small blocks.
Small man standing on the bumper, Mad Max style!
Killer work Steve, i also much prefer the hidden/factory look. Very well done. One big suggestion, consider adding a backing plate to the back of the bumper for the fairlead, and connect the backer plate to the frame horns/winch mount. This way if you are winching at an odd angle, the winch line doesn’t put pressure on the bumper. I can see it getting tweaked easily. Also to give yourself a mounting point back to the truck when using a snatch block, consider adding a hook or attachment point on the front bumper as well. It can also serve as a keeper for the line hook when everything is stowed away. Rather than letting the hook just bounce around unattached to anything while underway. Cheers from upstate NY.

I was thinking the same thing the thing Tow hooks are nice for the doubble pull But I realized by a comment I made a week or two ago Steve is one or two steps ahead of me on that stuff we just dont see it in this weeks video lol
@31:30 Derrick over at VGG would be so proud. A guy not only gets a batrey with a go handle, but he's using the right tools to put a cable onto said batrey!
Loving watching your truck project progress, and this winch installation is a huge enhancement. Nicely done - even the holes with additional ventilation are a stroke of genius! 🙄😆

Wow I could have sworn there was an engine in that truck during the last video. The frame looks like it came from the factory.... cleaned up and painted.... nice!
Two thumbs up Steve! One up there 👆 and one down here 👍🏻

Until now... a closely guarded old timer secret has finally been revealed. Ventilate them Bolts 😂 Been watching you for years, Steve and really enjoy your videos. Thank you for many, many hours of entertainment and learning... Russ
Really great video this week Steve, thanks. I appreciate the effort that you go to to make these programmes entertaining. A lot of us have been in your shop for a while and watched your production technique get better and better. Dozens of different camera angles, close ups, introducing people and pets... the list goes on. The editing is classy too, with all of us so used to TV, with its huge team of production engineers and endless money, a very hard act to follow. I really love engineering, and now , as I've become old, it's great to be able to sit here in my jim-jams, drinking coffee and watching you do lots of things that I would love to. Keep up the good work Steve, Saturdays are looked forward to by a good many of us.

I totally agree, well said sir.
That big Do-All saw is a real blessing. You did well getting that. In fact all your equipment is in great shape. With the way you treat your equipment they will all be in service for a very long time. This is the way I have done a number of these winches. The frame benefits the stiffening up in a notoriously weak area and it takes a lot of twist out of the frame as well making cornering at speed give a lot flatter way the truck sits in the corners. Thanks a bunch for having us into the shop again. It is always a pleasure to see you produce the quality work you do. Take care and I will see you next post.

I have both a vertical and a large horizontal powered bandsaws that are not set up for coolant. I watched you set up your big bandsaw with coolant capability and it does work great. Appears to improve blade life, cut quality is fantastic and that heavy duty machine does it's job with ease. That was a tremendous acquisition for your shop! Nick, North West Farmer

Yes! It made short work of that thick plate.
Looks cool in stealth mode. Can't wait for the motor teardown. All the best from Ireland Steve and Elizabeth.
Serious bandsaw there ! I think that your winch is better where it is because that way you can’t get forgetful and drive it into someone’s expensive dream in Harbour Freight’s car park, or vice versa as happened to me !
Steve , one piece you are going to have to add is a bracket from the winch plate to the hawse lead and make it beefy as well . I know from experience that any side load on the lead will quickly result in one really bent chevy bumper . great fab work !
metal front bumper... how quaint, ahhhhhh the good old days. The venting of the nuts is essential to proper long-term performance glad to see your attention to this detail.
For the winch power, you should run a wire & switch inside the cab!
I love the CAD (cardboard aided design)
I agree with you Steve putting it there is a great Idea, it's out of the way from things falling on it...
Good mornin , Steve. It is snowing hear in Michigan. I had a truck like the one you are working on. It was recently destroyed in an accident. Tree fell on it. nuts. Love watching you work on your truck. Thanks for the video. Grandpa. lol
Good idea Steve. I also like to have the things like the winch hidden in my rig. For some places, it is safer, so thiefs do not know you have a winch that they could reach, when you hide it behind the licence plate.
Crouching tiger, hidden winch. I'd probably have covered up that ventilation with big ('oversize' at McMaster) washers. ;-)
It's nice to see other people get a finger tip in the way when holding a straight edge to draw a straight line.😁
Love seeing curling chips, proper feed, proper speed, nice.....
Good idea Steve, and out of sight, out if mind. Take care Steve, Elizabeth and family
That is gonna be a very good utility minded truck. Should be a great help bringing home the firewood.
You don't sound like a grandpa for mounting it in behind, and out of sight... Some of us like the 'sleeper' option, and then show up the youngens with their jacked up police magnets :)
I thought I was a hard worker the things you accomplished in your spare time makes me wonder if I am a hard worker Or just a try hard
Hi Steve ,so you did hear me over the Doall machine noise to move the tape measure.👍Could you put a battery disconnect switch on the power line so you could leave the winch switch in the on position so you wouldn't have to search for it.As you know when you need it ,it will be dark and raining heavy .🤣
Thank DoAll for all their fine machinery!!!!
In the northeast NYC area in particular scratch is slang for money or cash. "You got any scratch " CAD cardboard aided design. Thanks for the content and greetings from the NJ Bayshore
You hit the nail right on the head!!! The 4” lift and 4” body lifts, really “can” look great, but they REALLY don’t drive great!! Haha. Soooo very true!! I made a comment to an acquaintance that if he was ever selling his 2012 Raptor SuperCab (I like the SuperCab models) that I would buy it. In the meantime I bought back a 2019 Raptor SuperCab I had sold to a friend because he wanted a 2022 model. I hate guy that back out on those comments like I made, so I bought the 2012!! I am fortunate I can do that. The 2019 is a “base” Raptor but the 2012 is fully loaded. The older Raptor rides better as well (for now, we’ll see). The 6.2 has about 196,000 km on it (122,500 miles) but is very well maintained. I felt it was just not as quick as the 3.5 V6 so recently put a Roush Supercharger kit on it. Definitely keeps up with the 3.5 now!! Haha. I am leaving the newer Raptor stock and low miles so I am now going to move to a Fox 2.5 suspension set up, 37s (just because) and play hard in the 2012. It’s going to be a chore getting the 37s in without a lot of lift so I’m still not sure what I’m going to do or not,,,, maybe get fibreglass front fenders and tuck it all inside,,,, not sure yet. It’s gonna look like a poser, but be used hard, especially at speed on prairie trails! I love your build and may copy some of your ideas on my 79 GMC High Sierra Shortbox Stepside I have inherited as a build that’s currently on a 6” lift vs a 3” I’m going to finish with. I am a big fan of the ideas you have!
Cutting curves in 3/8 plate, I love that bandsaw!
Loving how this is coming along Steve. I don't know many girls who would buy their guy a winch for Christmas, you're a lucky man. I think it's great you want to keep the factree look. Only thing I might have done different would to have gone for braided brake lines. Keep on keepin on brother

Thank you for sharing. Fantastic job fabricating the mount for the winch, I do like your choice of location too. Enjoyed.👍👀
Nice work Steve. Stealth is the way to go as there are certain people who would steal your eyes as you’re sleeping. Great video, thanks
Nice job. Frame shouldn't flex now too so it's a win win. Just fill up and holes drilled in the wrong place with weld that's what I do.
The old everytime it's the right size wrench 😊 nice job a salways Steve, hope you managed to keep that cold too yourself 😄 happy days 👍
Lol Steve! I totally understand what you mean about hiding your stuff. I love things to appear stock as well. Let me emphasize "appear". My daily driver isn't too special, but does have a turbocharger. People come up behind me in their mustangs or whatever thinking they're going to pass. I hit the initiate launch button (gas pedal) and BAM, now they're eating my dust. Its called a sleeper my friend. 😁 Great job on the sleeper winch project. Hope you get well soon also.
love it. I did the same thing on my 06 Ford Expedition. wench is custom mounted behind the lower grill panel. I bolted the mounting plate to the tow hook mounts on the frame rails. very simple, very low profile and kept the stock bumper. looks like a daily driver truck but off roads well too. nice job.

"wench"? How did you get her to stay behind the bumper?
Best pro of all it helps stabilize the frame flex it sure will help the steering sector and frame break on the chevy 4x4s I've had to repair so many of them
I really like the choice of keeping it hidden. Very clean look
Great job on the winch mount Steve. Those carriage bolts look amazing. Now you just have to get the bumper as shiny! 😉
Liked the ventilation holes... :-D Nice job, well done! :-D
Absolutely perfect setup. Nicely done.
Steve - With all of the time and work you have done, this is not a restoration project, it is a complete truck build !!!
In the mid 70’s I worked at a welding and machine shop that made many custom bumpers for oil field trucks, log trucks, pickups, etc. The boss got the area distribution rights for Hickey sidewinders which were installed behind the front bumper out of sight and in a better center of gravity situation as far as installing a winch on an already 200-300 lb bumper. They were good winches.
now i watch the show every week, im old and forget alot ,but sure dont remember the engine and tranny removal
Hope you feel better soon 👍
Nice Job Steve. I too like the winch hidden from view, as the lines of the ute look better.
Looks awesome even though you don't see it. I have mine mounted on my 2000 Chevy the same way with a mount purchased from rough country and works awesome. I have the same winch and I'm sure you will use the battery cut off switch supplied and just leave the switch on the winch on. I like the stock look as well, build is looking great and being done the right way!!!!! ✌
Great video Steve, very nice installation. I think you made the correct choice mounting the winch between the frame rails, it should also reduce the flex we saw when you repaired the steering box. One of your viewers suggested that you leave the switch set to on and fit an isolator in the battery cable. Sounds like a good idea to me. You won't have to worry about overheated bolt threads now that you have fitted vent holes, good thinking. Best wishes, Dean in Oxfordshire, UK.
Steve don't you love having that DoAll bandsaw. They are so handy to have. It is one of the more used tools in the shop for me.
Its amazing how clever you can be when someone else is doing the work. As you were cuting the steel on your bandsaw I immediately thought of the half holes, if you drilled a hole before using the bandsaw as you cut out the shape you end up with a half hole. I really enjoy your Saturday videos every week. Hi from the UK.

Had the same thought,it is often easy to spot after the fact.It sometimes helps to remember that Isaac Newton is credited with inventing the cat flap and milled edge coins, both delt with problems that had existed for thousands of years but it took one of the greatest minds in history to come up with answers that seem obvious in hindsight.

#1 pro for mounting it that way, you are not hitting your shin on it every time you walk by the front of the truck...

Bolthead cooling holes, what a brilliant idea, i'm gonna drill some tomorrow! Elisabeth sure knows how to pick a present, she is golden. Get well soon mate.
A company called Westin makes a flip up license plate holder that uses the fair lead as a mount and hides your hook. I have one on my Jeep because front plates are required in my state.
Watched this at work, currently -20°outside and the furnace is not working. Still this is a first class install, love it! Hope to do something similar to my truck.
Steve, my mom found an article in a magazine on a woman that heard of cooking from scratch. She asked at the grocery store, but no one was familiar with the concept. Finally, someone suggested going to a feed store, where she was able to buy a 50 lb bag of it. The long and the short of it is, that the terminology isn't necessarily what we expect it to be. No wonder you don't want to make your hidden winch setup from scratch.😁

Hi Steve, Powerfull stuf this week. Its getting a real fancy truck. 🍀
A number of years ago I purchased the 6000# Badlands winch from HF. Right out of the box it had dead relay in the control box. Returned it for free replacement and added 2 year replacement coverage. It has been absolutely dead reliable through much use, abuse and misuse. My rules with expensive HF purchases:1) **Always test the unit before starting any install work and be sure to test it in the short free return time. 2) Consider the cost of the extended coverage as part of the purchase price. Great video!
Awesome. Love it. I was just searching for winch bumpers online for my 84 k10. Despite the fact that there aren't many options, like you I appreciate the incognito method as well and there aren't any I could find that offer that. I will be doing this very thing myself in a few weeks. Thanks for putting this out there!
I am enjoying the transformation of this truck. I also appreciate keeping most of the original appearance while making several improvements to the performance, strength, and operation.
Nice installation Steve, there's something to be said for mounting the winch in a discreet location out of the gaze of certain elements of society, also there' no such thing as 'scrap', it's just stuff you haven't found a use for yet. All The Best from sunny Somerset.
I like it! I have a 8000 lb winch I use very often. I mounted mine to a 2" receiver plate. I carry it in the bed of my pickup. I put a receiver on my utility trailer, put one on my tractor box blade. Only thing I kept thinking about, on your set-up is how to protect the plastic control box that's usually mounted on top of the winch. I've broken mine twice. First time, a tractor rolled forward on mt trailer and squashed it., second time, it slid off the bed of my sideXside and landed upside down on the brand new control box. I still like your set-up.
Always look forward to your videos on Saturday morning and this one doesn’t disappoint Steve.
Nice install.Perfect place for that winch.Got a new sub
Install a drop down license plate bracket. It can also be used as a step for maintenance under the hood. They are Very convenient.
That is a great idea Steve. i do hope you feel better soon.

I got pretty sick for a week or so. Just now getting back to 100%. Good to see you Thom👍
I see that you are using CAD (Cardboard Aided Design)for your winch setup. It is a labor saving process that I've used as well. I've also used polycarbonate because I could see the holes through the clear plastic, and mark my holes directly over them making it easier to make several of the same piece, either by drilling through the plastic, or stacking the pieces together and tacking them, then center punch the holes to be drilled.
Glad to see you used clamps when drilling that plate. I have a scar on the inside of my left arm from attempting something similar without clamps.☹
Very cool Steve! 👌🏻👍🏻👏🏻

Man, I need that band saw!!! That thing is awesome! Please keep the vids coming. I just bought a12000 lbs winch yesterday and I’m doing exactly what you’ve done here
Inadequate ventilation for nuts can be the cause of so many problems! Great to see you head off any such issues with some decent ventilation holes in your winch mount Steve!
I do so love the DoAll machinery in your shop. If I was younger, that type equipment would be why I was working overtime.
I like the way you use Cad Design "Cardboard aided design"
In Ireland vehicles have to be inspected by the state periodically depending on age. When your pickup is ready for highway use will it have to meet a state inspection. Love the big DoAll
