Investigation reveals how thousands of police guns are ending up in the hands of criminals
A joint investigation conducted by CBS News and the nonprofit newsrooms The Trace and Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting found that more than 140 law enforcement agencies nationwide sell or trade-in their used weapons when they update their arsenals. Thousands of those former cop guns are later tied to a crime. Stephen Stock reports.

If the firearm was traced back to a department, was legally traded in for newer weapons, then sold legally to an individual, what aren't we hearing about the trace further down the line? Was the firearm purchased via Straw Purchase or stolen and used in the commission of the felony? Reporters and reporting have become so lazy. You want to tell a story, tell the entire story, not just hand picked portions.
Hey it’s 10pm, do you know where your children are?
If they're trading and selling the guns after they get new ones then this isn't really as serious as people make it out. Unless they're not supposed to do that. This is no different if I sold one of my guns to someone else and then they committed a crime, i can't control what they do.
FAKE NEWS!!!!! This is what's wrong with these ENTERTAINMENT STATIONS.
If they would keep the criminals in jail instead of releasing them that would help more than making more laws on guns that criminals don’t follow in the first place. Your local government is keeping the number of gun crimes high so they can push more gun laws that only hurt law abiding citizens

If the police department trades in their weapons to reduce the cost of replacement, the question should be, “what is the company that accepts those trade-ins doing?” It sounds to me like the companies are the ones responsible for these weapons ending up in the hands of criminals, not the police.

@@DarkmanRides The police chief said they traded them in for credit. You think they traded him into a prison guard system? It seems pretty clear to me that what’s going on does not involve law-enforcement, but involves the resale of guns that have been turned in for credit by whoever handled that deal. You’re not going to solve a problem if you keep looking in the wrong place.
Hold on……I’ll be right back……my gun just ran out the door. Bad gun!
The police trade or sell them to gun dealers, they don't sell them out of squad cars, try blaming criminals instead of the police for a change.
Title/response: Police Academy is historically the fastest way to put guns in the hands of criminals in USA. I'll take "More Irony" for 800$.
What did people expect would happen to old police weapons, at least the ones that can legally be sold back to dealers? These PD’s are not going out to dark alleys selling weapons, they order a new service weapon and then trade in the old ones to the Federally Licensed Firearms Dealer or Wholesaler probably because of the quantity and then those used service weapons go out to other FFL Dealers who resell them and then that person might trade it or sell it to someone they know for something else or to recoup some of their money and then that person might have it for awhile before they sell or trade it to someone else and way down the line usually is when the criminals get ahold of it by theft or other illicit means. As far as the ATF being required to melt down their old weapons, that doesn’t always happen either as the ATF has a horrible record of keeping track of weapons and weapons magically disappearing from their facility in West Virginia that destroys weapons and even last year workers were indicted for “Disappearing” weapons from that facility and then selling them on the black market
They need to change how they're getting rid of theses guns.

Or why? Jeez can't even buy from a store without the harassment of the A.T.F. The rights of the people shall not be infringed. That's right We The People don't care of guns in the hands of so called "criminals" because the rights are unalienable

This is misleading…..police don’t sell or trade weapons to the GENERAL PUBLIC. When sold or traded it’s to a legal firearm dealer and ANYONE obtaining a firearm from said dealer, has to pass a BACKGROUND check just like ANYONE purchasing a firearm. Again….EMOTIONS are driving these statements. Most likely and in most cases…..the firearm was STOLEN by someone’s badass child at some point. Idiotic reporting. Following the 'logic' that they put into this reporting..... if you sell a car to another person, then its stolen from that person and used in a crime.... the original owner should be held responsible? Uh no. Police departments lawfully selling firearms to legal buyers has no effect on crime. It's the criminals who steal and illegally possess and use firearms that cause the crimes..... not the firearm.
unbelievable... people need to be able to sue gun manufacturers and gun owners when the guns they sell are used in crimes. That would fix it ASAP. Hope that legislation comes within the next 15-20 years.

Using your logic. If your car is stolen and used in a robbery and someone dies then you yourself are responsible and should get the death penalty because you allowed your vehicle to be stolen. Let's say you legally sold a car and the person who bought it committed a crime and someone died. Should you be held liable for the death of the victim? Ridiculous right? Think before you speak.
