Investigation into GM transmission issues continues | WSOC

Some drivers are upset with General Motors. They say there's a problem with the transmission in many of GM's cars, trucks and SUVs. Concord resident Steven Brack bought a Chevy Silverado last year.

I'm a retired ASE Master Tech with an L1 advanced level cert. and 40 + yrs experience: 25yrs at a GM dealer, 20 as head tech with auto transmission as My specialty along with engine drivability because they are related. Now that I'm retired I can safely say that GM is one of the most arrogant company's I've ever seen they will make something that is nothing but trouble and know it. But because they are so big they don't care and will usually continue making the same P.O.S. for a few years then do a so called "make over" that again has it's own trouble so the process therefore NEVER ENDS!!! I could tell You stories that would curl Your hair about the "WE DON"T CARE " attitude they have. Now before some mechanic hater says "why don't you speak up?' the answer is some of us do because it really bothers us and believe Me we get sick of hearing the complaints and told we're dumb or stupid because we can't fix it. But we bite our tongue and must be careful if You want and KEEP a job. I've been asked if I miss it ? All I can say is no I don't miss getting My nuts kicked by some one almost every day.

Typical GM. I bought my wife a brand new Cadillac CTS and General Motors spent almost $15k on warranty work in our first 3 years of ownership. The only reason that number isn't higher is GM refused to repair the car anymore even though it was still under factory warranty. We traded the Cadillac in on a Lexus and now only visit the dealer for oil changes and free donuts. Problem solved! The car almost has 100k miles on it now and we have done nothing but feed it gas and oil. We're Lexus owners for life!

I bought a 2016 Silverado LTZ, and have had issues with the transmission since the very first day. I tried to take it back the 2nd day, and was told by the dealer that I couldn't because I signed a contract. I told them I would hire a lawyer, & they told me all I would be doing is wasting my money, because their lawyers would keep it tied up in court for years. Chevy did finally admit that there was a problem, & extended the drive train warranty to 61,000 miles. But now even that has expired, & I still have the same problem. This is the final American vehicle I will buy. I have bought only Chevy's for over 40 years, & I'm sick of their lying dealerships. The salesmen lie, the mechanics lie, and the customer service for Chevy is horrible. My next truck will be a Tundra, I have talked to so many owners & they tell me they are extremely satisfied with the truck, the dealerships, & service departments.

Avoid trucks and large SUVs and it's not that bad. A 2020 corolla or Elantra or Sentra is approximately the same cost with inflation as it was in 1996. You could argue about income stagnation for many jobs. Most "compact" cars though are not more expensive now if you consider inflation. One of the big issues is they can't make a basic small truck anymore for the US. has to have a million safety features and all the other tech.

Yep, my 2008 truck had transmission issues starting in its first 2000 miles. Suffice it to say I had it in many times, they denied problems until the transmission was screeching between shifts, then they put clutches in it (3 times under warranty) it would start again in a couple thousand miles and they would deny anything until you could hear is shift down the street. Then it completely locked up the entire drive train in the middle of the road and I had to tow it in at 40,000. Insane how bad they are. I finally had to have the trans and torque converter rebuilt (out of warranty) and the truck runs fine now. GM Service Stinks. All they want to do is keep the rattles quiet in hopes that your warranty will run out before they have to do any real work. And I went to many shops so this isn't about 1 dealer. Oh and the Regional GM Customer Service guy wouldn't even me a number and said he didn't even have an email address. That should tell you all you need to know.

However the older 4L60E, 700r4, and the th350 are some of the best transmissions ever produced and used in these platforms. Maybe current/updated variations, the 8L90, may be over engineered to the point of reduced reliability. They also use cheap and shitty clear coat. It's usually one of those things where GMs (more so old ones rather than their new garbage) can often run a long time with normal use but towards the end, there's a lot of stuff that doesn't work anymore, the interior is disintigrating and the clear coat is peeling.... You just don't get that with a Toyota unless it's been badly abused it's entire life. Had a '93 GMC Sierra in great shape and the Delco radio just decided to quit working out of the blue... Once they got past the four-speed automatic, all of their transmissions have been pure garbage. I worked on GM vehicles for 11 1/2 years. We were replacing the front wheel drive transmissions in the traverse, enclave, and Acadia roughly around 60,000 miles. On average we were replacing up to seven transmissions a week in the shop under warranty! Same thing with the GM 8 speed transmissions. They’re just not reliable at all. Between the head gasket/head bold issues on the Northstar engines, oil leaks, lower intake gaskets on the 60° V6 engines, timing chain failures on the Ecotec 2.4 4 cylinder, and 3.6 liter V6 engines. While gas mileage isn’t something I would personally care about if I owned a vehicle like that, it does seem like one main complaint is that the Tundra gets way worse gas mileage than other comparable trucks. I’ve also read that because of it, Toyota might move towards a twin turbo V6 or even a hybrid to get better gas mileage. Toyota really doesn’t mess with forced induction when it comes to cars in the US, as far as I know, so for them to consider putting a twin turbo V6 in their new Tundras would be a be a pretty big deal

My dad bought a 2018 Chevy Colorado Centennial Edition brand new, and it shuttered from the minute he drove it off the lot. GM told him many different things that were not true. He is a mechanic and has been for over 20 years, so he knows what he’s doing. They were treating him like he didn’t know what he was talking about. They said it was low quality fuel, but he had a log of where filled up, how many gallons, etc. dating back months proving that was not the case. Then they said it needed a transmission fluid flush, that didn’t help. Then a new torque converter, and that made it shutter even worse. He fought GM on it, and they paid him to deal with it. He has finally had enough and is selling the truck and buying something new. GM needs to figure this out.

I own a 1998 Chevy Silverado, 25 years old and 256,000 miles. Never had any transmission or engine issues. I do all my own maintenance. Every 3 months someone knocks on my door asking if I want to sell it. My answer is always the same; HELL NO!. It may not all have all the bells and whistles like these newer vehicles, but it is reliable, and I am able to do all my own maintenance. I recently replaced all the steering components and it rides like new again; ball joints, controal arm bushings, tie rods, pitman & idler arms.

The latest fluid addresses the problem. I do these all the time and have yet to have one come back after using the latest version of the Mobil 1 LV ATF. My opinion though is GM torque converters fkn suck. If they made a decent converter the 6l80 and 90 transmissions would hardly ever fail. Every one I fix is traced back to converter failure. Get a good billet converter and the 6 spds will live. Beside converter shudder in the 8 spds, I don't see them fail internally. Wife has one in her Cadillac and other than the shudder, which was fixed with the latest fluid, it has no issues at 92k miles.

That trucks transmission failed at 32k and has caused a strain in our business as we are now down a truck and unable to make money. The GMs comment to us was that they wouldn't give us a rental vehicle until the vehicle is diagnosed which still equals to thousands of dollars in lost revenue. The caption of the video is "transmission issues" and every comment I have read sofar seems to be folks who have jumped onto this assumption. I have a '15 Silverado and the shudder I feel at speed is very obviously due to the cylinder deactivation. It is somewhat noticeable at highway speeds but far worse below 30-35mph. Nothing to do with the transmission and I am finding it hard to believe that GM engineers have not made this connection and developed some kind of software patch to make the cylinder deactivation less aggressive at low RPMs. Seems like this vibration could easily put significant wear on the TCC and its damper springs and perhaps worsen over time. This is the closest association I can make with the vibration and the transmission. Any fellow ASE Master techs out there who will back up my theory??

I think the biggest question in all of this is how come the lawsuit doesn't catch up to them and force them to fix it. My 2017 Silverado has been shuddering for the last 35,000 MI and I have already had talks with GM and they've already given me the runaround like most of you. I have signed up on the class action suit against them that I might add has been out for the last 2 years and nothing more has been done? When I talked to GM I said "No this is where we are at if I have to pull out of my pocket to fix your problem I'll never buy another one of your products". If you have one of the GM 8-speed transmissions between about 2015 and 2018 You are probably in the same position I am. Why can't the lawyers force GM to fix it though???

Because they are in on it as well. Nowaday we as consumers have to understand that they don't give a rats butt about us. So far on my 2016 Silverado, with about 82,000 miles on it, I had to put new tires on it at around 30,000 miles, because of the rubber chunking away. Brought it to dealer & they of course blamed it on my driving. I went ahead & had the transmission repaired somewhere else, had to do a tuneup & new serpentine belt on it at 78,000 miles, even though it wasn't supposed to be necessary until 90,000. Had to have everything taken off the front and the back brakes & redone. Mind you I have taken this to a shop I know are honest & well respected. But still, it has cost me at the very least right around $15,000. I won't ever have anything to do with a dealership again.

Chevrolet has always had issues with light duty truck transmission. Mine had to be replaced at 25 miles...that’s why I went to RAM, ZF Transmissions. The best in a half-ton pickup. GM wouldn’t warranty a battery in my 1-year old van, but the GM battery says 3-year free replacement. They don’t care one bit, after the sale...

I have a 2016 Sierra Denali 1500 4WD. I got the vibration from hell and the 2nd gear kick in the ass problem. I went through several ECU flashes, a transmission flush all before 25k miles on the truck. Torque converters on the 8 speed trans had/have serious shift issues. After getting all the other work done the 2nd gear hard shift still remained. Dealership said GM is aware and will not replace torque converter because I’d receive the same faulty converter as a replacement. Somewhere between 45-50k miles I was required to get the transmission flushed as part of scheduled maintenance. At this time, I was told GM has started using a heavier viscosity fluid in the trans that helps create more pressure and better shifting. It didn’t. I’ve learned to live with it. It’s only annoying at low speeds. I’m a GM guy married into a GM family. Love my truck but GM likes to cut a ton of corners and still charge astronomical prices. If they’d ever listen to their customers feedback and stop allowing the drunkest engineers to design the vehicles they might put out an impressive fleet of vehicles. The guy who designed the DEF port next to the fuel port is a genius. The guy who chose where the tow/haul mode knob was placed in the HD trucks is not the same dude as the DEF port guy. That dude is a drunken idiot
