Inventing 101 | Chase Lewis | TEDxUNC

In his TEDxUNC 2015 talk, Chase Lewis, a 15-year-old inventor, talks about taking any tools around us - any inspiration that we can find - to stop waiting, to take action and to do something. Chase uses his personal experience doing just that for the past several years, and conveys that we ALL can do it.
Notwithstanding his young age, 15-year-old Chase Lewis has invented two life-saving devices. People usually are amazed that someone so young is an inventor, let alone an inventor with one patent and another one on the way. What amazes Chase, however, is that people often do not understand that we ALL are inventors. Chase believes there is nothing more human than invention.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Also goes to show that inventions don't have to be complicated or sophisticated... You don't have to invent the "next big thing", you can invent everyday solutions to everyday problems. Always be thinking 👍

That’s really what engineering is, and there are many different branches that give you the fundamental knowledge on how to create anything is this world within the law of physics and chemistry if you can imagine it, see a problem, invent a solution. :)

Inventing 101 is a fantastic idea, it would be worth its weight in gold in terms of teaching kids to learn how to learn and encouraging a growth mindset. Inventing is all about seeing big problems as smaller much more manageable problems with simpler solutions and who doesn’t have much to gain from further developing that skill set?

It’s been some time, so I hope you’re less hard on yourself these days, but I really resonated with this feeling at one point and wanted to gently remind you that no two people have the exact same skill sets, spawn points, or maps to sort out their life. You’re still insanely young, you’ll find the things that make you brilliant. Every step of the journey has as much meaning as the milestone ones :)

Pretty sure this is also known as problem solving and commonly referred to as farming. If we issued patents for everything a farmer came up with to solve a problem we'd have quadruple the number patents... and these two inventions would undoubtedly already be patented.

This is (formerly) Chase Lewis. The original issue is very significantly less prevalent now, and really was only particularly present during the Somali famine of 2011. I'm not sure if the statistics are still available, but there were at least a few hundred deaths attributable to the causes stated in the video during that famine. That said, I don't think, looking back on it, that the travois has much utility. It suffered from some significant design flaws. In the later, bamboo iteration, some of these flaws persisted; it may still have some utility in that role, but the fact that the idea hasn't been adopted speaks for itself. It's also worth noting that the bit about difficulty transporting the sick/weak/elderly/those in delivery distress only applies in particularly remote portions of the most impoverished nations. And no, I had not (and still have not) been to any nation in Africa; I was also rather insensitive in my discussion of a number of matters relating to the people of Africa, which I regret.
