For me, the key to overcoming intrusive thoughts was by 1) Labeling them 2) Accepting that they are only my fears 3) Knowing who I am and staying true to who I am 4) Prayer. I asked God to protect my mind and heart from evil 5) Train my brain to focus on loving, safe, positive, happy thoughts 6) Realizing that everyone has them. I hardly have any now and if they ever pop back up, i just repeat the steps 😌

Take ALL thought captive for they are not your own. Labeling leads you away from the Truth. Why embrace fear when it’s not your own? You want to overcome fear. The very reason you have fear is because you do not know who you are. If you did it would not be possible to have fear. Simply pray, be still and know…not the other verbal mumbo jumbo. You cannot train your brain/control your thoughts for they are not your own. Do you have anger?

"You have to treat your mind like a wise parent. It is a brilliant child, but it has been unruly for a very long time. And for it to establish itself in a new way will take a lot of patience and care on your part. You cannot treat it brutally; you cannot punish it; you cannot denigrate it. You’re going to have to learn how to guide it and manage it productively. Then its great service to you and to the world can become apparent, over time." *Marshall Vian Summers*

As someone who has dealt with intrusive rumination for over 25 years now. In my experience, it does no good to push the thoughts away. They become more powerful if we identify and care about them too deeply. Let them do their worst. Let them come as often as they want without over-identification. Mindfulness and self-compassion meditation are both highly useful. Acceptance is key. Therapy in a nutshell, is a wonderful channel! Childhood trauma absolutely causes ruminative thoughts in adult life. CPTSD is a nasty thing. Healing the nervous system should be the focus. And that as any therapist knows requires a Herculean effort.

I wish I could like the same video multiple times. I get this intrusive thought that, if I touch a knife, I'm going to use it to hurt someone, so I spent some time avoiding knives and the thought only got louder. Eventually, I just named that thought 'Adrian' so when it shows up, I think "Ah, there's Adrian again, stopping in to say hello." and I just keep doing whatever I was going to do, such as chopping vegetables or doing arts and crafts. Adrian has gotten much quieter because of that. :)

For me, my intrusive thoughts are absolutely related to childhood trauma. It's a form of hypervigilance, it ultimately is just s a desire for control. I also find it is a way for me to avoid feeling emotions (which are scary, and often stored in the body) and instead spend time in the rabbit hole. It's sooo unhealthy and destructive. Visual cues have helped me best (throwing the thought down.a well and walking on to find a beautiful meadow instead) and I'm working on finding a somatic therapist. Movement helps. Daily.

I know the answer..but the fear or hot flash anxiety caused by not harming them…makes me think??????? Then the hot flashes and sweat floods my body and completely ruins my day…and it’s an on going cycle. Its only when I feel like I’m thinking of it, inside my head….as if I’m looking off to the side like…soo??? If that makes sense? Like I’m living in my head

I just viewed this episode and would like to say something about meditation and intrusive thoughts. As someone who has anxiety and who has practiced meditation for many years I speak from my own experience. Meditation does clear the mind but not every time and not permanently. Intrusive thoughts return but the experience of them changes, or can change. Meditation can bring the mind to a state of stillness where there is peace and a sense of expansive awareness that is free of thoughts, feelings and resistance. This is a wonderful state to be in because you're finally free but also aware. This state lasts for a while. For me it typically lasts between 20 minutes and 45 minutes. Then it lifts up and away and you return to a normal state. You feel better for a while but in the course of your normal day or week thoughts and feelings return. With a regular meditation practice you benefit from a sort of protection from thought assaults. You have the thoughts, but they're kind of at arm's length, so to speak. They appear but in the background, as if they are a few feet away from you speaking to you. You notice them but you notice them more as a witness or observer. It's as if there is a space between you and the thoughts. You're not triggered by them because they are over there and they haven't set off any alarms. From that perspective you can see what you are thinking without any attachment to it. But like I said before, this experience doesn't occur every time I meditate. Sometimes I don't reach a state of freedom during mediation. And when you stop practicing meditation regularly that distance from your thoughts eventually fades. But in general mediation can have profound benefits. In this episode, at 38:37 minutes, Mrs. McAdam and Ms. Green address a question from a viewer about intrusive thoughts during meditation. In my experience, the mediation process is different every time you do it. Sometimes you move into that space of stillness easily, even quickly, and sometimes you don't. During those sessions when thoughts continue to come you just have to practice patience and wait. It helps to bring your focus back to one point, such as the space between your eyes where the third eye is located. But gently. Or focus on the breath. I don't get into a relaxed state quickly so I allow myself 30 minutes to an hour for meditation.

I had an aromatic experience that brought up an intrusive thought and it has been beyond scary and I have never had a thought like this in the 30 years that I have been alive. It’s uncomfortable and scary. I have been in therapy and have spoken about it. Is scary and worrisome. It’s relief to know that these thoughts come to attack what we love most and that’s exactly what’s happening for me. I catch them and do in fact label them as intrusive thoughts and that definitely helps. I was diagnosed with ptsd but I also believe that we have power over our minds to help change the relationship with it. Praying has helped me. This one tries to be sticky but I really have to push through it. I have never felt like this before. I have has some in the past but this is one I have faith I can push through. Life has been good to me and I pray god clears my mind and protects me and my family. As I only want to be a good mommy and live a happy life. One day at a time.

Just wanted to comment on meditation. I use various types of meditation but my favorite is the silent mind meditation. Sit in a comfortable position, eyes closed, and focus on the breath. When you notice you're thinking, interrupt the thought with "thinking" and return to the breath. Over time, you'll get better at not thinking, when that's your intention, and you'll lose track of the breath as well. For someone with a very busy mind, it's weird to sit in silence, but also really cool. Hope this helps and thanks for all the helpful info you've provided us 🙂

Thank you both for this discussion & your wisdom. I can relate to the OCD, intrusive thoughts & social anxiety as I have had all three for the whole of my life. They are draining & debilitating to manage. I try to push through & feel I'm probably going to have to deal with this for the rest of my life. That's tough for me to think about, not an intrusive thought, just a fact of life for me. I never give up no matter how low I feel. I've cut my world down so small for the past 30 years & hardly do anything socially because of my challenges but I am trying to change. Keep on doing what you're doing Emma & Dr. Green. I gain knowledge & help from your advice & other people .....Thank you.

She teaches you to expose yourself to the triggers of your anxiety, yes at first it’s very uncomfortable but after a while your mind gets so used to your triggers it no longer sets your anxiety off. Then you keep yourself busy so your not dwelling on it. Yoga sounds ideal. Meditation is also a great way to clear your mind.m as well. Really hope it works for you. :)

I really appreciate your life saving videos. They have carried me through a year and a half of long term illnesses that came after a respiratory virus, possibly Long Term Covid. I have had two episodes of intrusive thinking related to Synthroid overdose. The first one was 37 years ago. It crushed my spirit and I am yet devasted in the deepest part of me from it. The second one was during this current illness but ironically, the Endocrinologist increased the Synthroid recently. The interview is extremely helpful to me because I cannot forgive myself even though the two thoughts were absolutely intrusive for no apparent reason. I hate them. They are not me whatsoever. I felt mentally raped and it is so emotionally painful. I was totally fine before they overdosed me in 1990. No anxiety, depression, no Menierre's ear (the storm damaged my left ear). Just happy. I thank God for a wonderful career and two sons, two grandchildren. Nothing has been easy for me since 1990. Nothing regarding health. All of your videos are very very helpful. I’ll do the acceptance thing each time a wave hits and do okay but once I get worn down hours into an episode it gets harder, then I start judging myself and fearing how long it’s going to last. I have found that having the experience before and seeing that others also go through the same thing really helps though.

Try not to engage in the compulsive behaviour of trying to figure out why intrusive thoughts exist in the first place. This behaviour actually took me years to identify and it was a light bulb moment. The compulsion of looking for reasons fuel OCD. It’s also imperative in working with a practitioner who knows the condition inside out. I appreciate that everyone’s different but regardless of the specific therapy treatment you participate in, please make sure that it involves exposure therapy. Knowledge is everything and things do get better.

This was such an interesting session--I loved the conversation and all the knowledge sharing. I would love to hear more specific examples of what kind of behavior might trigger anxiety and how one should react depending on the nature of the trigger. For example, I freaked out today when I went to pick up my take-out order and most of the employees weren't wearing a mask. I didn't over-do it, but I felt provoked. On the other hand, maybe they were seriously just trying to live life and get past the pandemic. Maybe I should not have cared if the food preparers wore masks. These kind of judgement calls are worthy of discussion so that the average Jane/Joe can gauge her own behavior.

Thoughts that have turned into habits. All neurons are strengthened over time. I had to quit a job, because I cared too much about what my coworkers thought of me. People will not understand unless they have went through it. I made the mistake of talking about it. I was also mobbed bullied at work. It just took one person that got mad, then that one person went to the rest of the coworkers and got them mad at me over work related problem that could be solved with little communication. Over time, people treated me like I was looking for attention. Irony is I cared about them and the increase pressure from them made me worse. I should of left sooner. I shouldn’t of thought them as friends.

Below are lyrics to a song I wrote just a couple of days ago about this very subject, and then your video appears here for me to watch. It’s cool how things work out sometimes. To explain the lyrics a little… “ghosts” are my intrusive thoughts. I recently realized I always push them away without actually hearing them. I automatically label them as bad, weak, wrong, etc. So I started to try imagining them as ghosts from my past visiting me. Losses, sorrows, failures, and regrets. Not to be feared, but welcomed as friends and teachers. I imagined inviting them in to sit down and talk, finding the good side of whatever they are to me. And this song happened. It makes me cry every time I sing it, in a good way. ………………………………….. Sometimes ghosts come visiting Pressed up against the glass All of my sorrows at once Like a quiet avalanche Every loss, an icicle of pain I push you out, you want back in Maybe it’s time, to let you stay Instead of sending you away So come on in for a while Let’s reminisce, about a good life A good life, a good life

If you ever do another video together, could you talk more about the link between OCD and tic disorders? I have both Tourette's and OCD, but I only got my OCD diagnosis at the age of 32 when I suddenly had severe intrusive thoughts (as a side effect of an antibiotic which is known to exacerbate OCD and anxiety symptoms). Before that, I always thought my (mild) OCD symptoms were part of my Tourette's because they "felt" exactly the same in my mind. I thought my Tourette's came with physical and mental tics, and it still doesn't seem right to me to view them as two separate conditions when the only difference is whether or not my muscles are involved.

Q 1...Have my intrusive thoughts since early childhood determined my negative life path, even though I am working at being more positive, choosing my words carefully and thoughts more mindfully, and meditating? Q2 ... is FAKING IT TIL I MAKE IT damaging me to stay "locked in" or "enabling" to the negative side of things, past thoughts dictating the past truth, which is not true for the me that is safe, in the NOW AT PRESENT?

Thanks Emma for another great video. I'll probably be watching it again to take notes. My limited experience with meditating is to just be gently aware. Whether it be the breath, sounds outside the body, or when thoughts arise in consciousness. Then when you are aware of the thought, acknowledge it. And be aware you are not your thoughts. One thing that has helped me is to say internally to myself, "Let's set with this thought and see what it wants. Why is it vying for attention?" And sometimes the thought dissipates just at that action. If it doesn't, then I speak to it like a patient parent talking with a child. Trying to be full of compassion and understanding. Then gently focusing awareness back to the breath or sounds outside the body. I never hold on to the thought or push it away. Always reminding myself I am the observer of the thoughts. And rinse and repeat when a thought arises, which it will. This has not been a panacea but it is another tool in helping me with my GAD and other anxiety issues. I am not cured but I am slightly better than I used to be. And by no means am I an expert on meditation. But I hope this may aid someone. Jon Kabat-Zinn is a nueroscientist who has researched meditation for decades and his talks have helped me. As well as Shuana Shapiro, another nueroscientist. Sorry for the Tl,dr post.
