Introspective jam with Elektron Octatrack MkII, PWM Malevolent

A live synthesizer and sampler jam performed entirely on hardware.
This piece started as an exercise on piano, and really deserves partial songwriting credit for my amazing piano instructor (thanks, Shannon!). I created the three sections of the song, and, when I had a few minutes during a busy day of work, sequenced them in the box with a Kontakt piano. From there I added a band (bass synth, drums, a weird arpeggio, and brass) and exported the three sections to the Octatrack.
I also knew I wanted to play the melody line on a mono synth. I tried it first on the SH-101, but it wasn't right. On a whim, and because I hadn't touched it in a while, I put the PWM Malevolent on the table, and it had the perfect ghostly-but-textured sound I was looking for. The Malevolent is an underrated synth that sounds a little bit different than anything else out there at the moment.
Once I got going on the Octatrack, the song came together quickly. As always, the Octatrack is the perfect device for taking sketches and ideas and turning them into finished songs, thanks to its arranging, mixing, effects, and most importantly, its scenes.
All in all I'm happy with where this track ended up, even though I'm always a little more unsure about my halftime pieces than the fast stuff.
Thanks for listening.
Elektron Octatrack MkII - sample mangler, mixer, effects (including for Malevolent), scenes
PWM Malevolent - synth melody (through Octatrack's effects)
A non-exhaustive list of plug-ins used during building the track: Noise Engineering free oscillators in Reason 12, Olafur Arnolds piano toolkit in Native Instruments Kontakt, Devious Machines Infiltrator 2 (on arpeggio), Future Audio Workshop SubLab XL
Performed and recorded live to a stereo output, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

That might be the first time I've heard the Malevolent used for anything other than "LISTEN TO MY WILD GAIN STAGING"

Honestly, it has some really great sweet spots that aren't just pedal-to-the-metal. I still keep usually the drive cranked, but it has its own cool thing going on.

Very elegant handoff from the opening piano to the lead synth of the Malevolent. Beautiful.

nice to hear the melodic side of what this bad boy synth can do besides high gain gritty stuff. I really like this and the MS20 as well as the Erica Synths Bassline.

I love the musicality of your work! I can only achieve this level of creativity by painstakingly playing a track at a time and layering + polishing for hours; but never via live performance like you do, or with so many devices at once like in some of your tracks. Maybe some day, after years of practice! P.s. Just now got a Keystep Pro and Virus TI2, to add to my OT/A4/MD and others. The only thing I’ve neglected is hardware effects, Just using VSTs and iPad AUV3s for now.

Beautiful! The problem I have with the OT is that it needs independent outs other wise you just have to live with a stereo recording. All of these incredible uses of the fader will never be lined up perfectly when tracking. And while imperfections can be lovely and human, I feel like most of the fader modulations should be in sync. Even if their timing is off, the macros are in still in time with each other. I just stopped using the fader then… which is sort of a waste of an Octatrack.

I definitely agree, but as a workaround I believe its possible to to control the fader with a midi cc so you could sync the OT to your daw and then add automation for the fader so it will be in sync every time. Kinda a hassle though.

Amazing tune! It somehow reminds me a track called "Planetarium" by Squarepusher (forgotten gem!). Have you mastered the track anywhere outside the Octa? Or the whole mix and master have been done in the box? Cheers!
