Introduction
Virtualization allows you to separate the Operating System from the underlying hardware
Virtualization is NOT the same as Cloud Computing. Virtualization is a Type of Cloud Computing.
Hypervisors are the software that Operating System "Instances" run on.
Overview
Virtualization allows you to easily migrate servers between pieces of physical hardware
Virtualization allows you to consolidate multiple cheap physical servers into one server
An "Instance" is a "Virtual Computer" installed on a Hypervisor.
Type 1 Hypervisors
Called Bare Metal Hypervisor
Installs directly on to hardware
You use Management Software installed on a different computer to manage a Type 1 Hypervisor box.
Based on XEN.
Generally the Hypervisor is free, but you pay for the Management software
Over Allocation allows you to allocate more total resources to the Instances of the operating systems then the physical server has. At any one time all Instances CANNOT use more resources then the total amout that the server has.
Type 2 Hypervisors
Called Hosted Hypervisor
Type 2 Hypervisors are installed onto an Operating System such as Windows 7, OSX or Linux. (VirtualBox, Virtual PC)
Be careful allocating resources to virtual machines. You have the ability to allocate so many resources to the virtual machines that you crash the host machine.
Networking can start acting "weird" on the host machine when Virtual Machines are running
Converting to Virtualization
Vendors of Virtualization software have "conversion" software that will convert an Operating System that installed on a Physical Computer into a Virtual Machine
Many pieces of Backup Software no backup servers directly into a Virtual Machine.
Final Thoughts...
Be careful of licensing!!! Per Server/ Per Socket/ Per Core
Virtualization software is stable, and not "cutting" or "bleeding" edge technology.
Resources
Xen
Citrix
VMWare
VirtualBox
Virtual PC

Thank YOU! ELI!, regards from Lima, PERU.
The beauty of Eli is that his "ability to explain the technology and pass it to others in a very easy and understandable way" .
I don't understand how ANYONE can give this guy a thumbs down. He's the Khan academy of hardware and networking. Cheers

he spends a lot of time repeating himself, but i wouldnt say enough to downvote
Eli, I will always be indebted to you. Almost anytime that I have a system question, there you are with an Army styled point by point block of instruction on the subject. Thank you for all of the digestible, yet comprehensive content.
You are, by far the best teacher I have ever come across anywhere, online or in person of any IT topic. Man you probably don't even realize how big a service you are doing to folks like us who scour through reams of documents and large contents on the internet just to get a grasp of these topics. THANK YOU!!!
i watch other "guides" on KZread and they are sooo monotonous. .i always come back to yours. thanks for all the googobs of useful info :)
This is why i love youtube. Who said education can't be free. Thank you for the Tutorial! Subbed, Fav'ed and Liked.

watching a youtube video is not real education
Wonderful, thank you so much :0 Most presentations, even lectures in real life, have zero redundancy and just blast through the material at incomprehensible pace. With yours, it's like... listen to it, okay, got it in one, woah. I actually understand the concept instead of just learning to parrot the words to describe it.
This is a only classroom, where I never fall asleep.....

Huge Fan man,i remember having your "Introduction to networking video" that really got me more into starting my IT career! now I'm head of IT with knowledge in networking, Windows suit, Firewalls and getting into the cloud game and deploying OpenStack this month. Thanks a lot!
first time to learn about virtualization and i am sooo glad i came across your videos
Hi, Eli. Great thanks. Virtualization has confused me for a loooooong time. You, genius guy, make it easy to understand.
best IT instructor ever :)
Eli, I have watched a few of your video classes. They are simply great and great and you really have done a superb job, man! I have benefited tremendously from each of your video. Please do keep posting more of those videos. Thank you so much for putting out a genuine work on KZread. Suresh, Ontario, Canada.
I truly enjoy Eli's lessons. He is great at explaining things in a simple way and he ties up information together beautifully, not to mention his indispensable repeat of vital information for the viewer to easily and quickly retain. His delivery is smooth and his manners are charming. Many thanks Eli!

Well done Eli. AS always you make things clear, concise and enjoyable. Thanks
Eli, I've been working in the IT/communications field for over 20 years and I have to give you a really big "thumbs-up" on this video. I've learned all about VM's and all the animals it contains. You explain things very clearly, and in a very good pace. Kudos to you, keep up the great work!!
the beautiful thing about eli is ---- bloody hell seems like he is reading my sleepy mind and he repeats and recap everything, which I pick up even if I have missed anything during his first intro ---- one of the best teacher I came across in my whole life
Thank You so much Eli Sir. I am a fresher undergoing training in Cloud Computing in Capgemini. I always watch your videos before my assessments because you explain every topic crystal clear. You indeed are the best teacher on KZread ! who follows the KISS principle..never bores.. and always helps me learn so much !
This was a great video! I've been trying to use wikipedia to figure out this concept. Your explanation was much clearer to understand. Thanks
Eli's IT videos are really amazing! He's really good at explaining things!
Eli, Thank you so much for taking the time to really break this down for us. You are the true meaning of an EFFECTIVE teacher - use simple terminology that normal people can understand, and that is key to learning - and now because your method, I really have a better understanding .. GREAT JOB bro!!!
Level: Beginner Presenter: Eli is very good instructor. Presentation is very good.
This was an awesome video! I now feel like I have a mental framework to better learn the specifics of the many virtualization tools. Also, you are a natural teacher, and I really appreciate your starting with the big picture-- IMO this is critical, but often overlooked in tech training. Thanks so much for posting this!
Almost 10 years and this course still one of the best courses out there on virtualisation. You give me the will to switch to IT everytime I watch your videos. Your way to teach things is amazing. You seek like a very nice guy
Mindblowing clarity with which you explain Eli and it just syncs in ... thank you so much !
Eli , God Bless you for being so patient throughout the session. You definitely understand the importance of repeating key points on the subject which help the beginners like me a lot. I have a good understanding about what virtualization is to begin with and continue my journey of learning. Thank you :)
Nice Tutorial. Long Live Computer Guy to help all
very good lessons for even a non-techie person. repeating of same things basically reinforce the idea/concept. excellent for introduction class. very clearly explained difference between cloud and virtualization. i will look for cloud class from him. great guy...thanks a lot.
Well done, E! This helps me in my new IP Telephony sales job. You don't overwhelm, yet you don't leave any meat on the bones. Your approach is balanced. Thank you, Sir, it's much appreciated.
Eli, as a fellow IT er all of your training is some of the best I have seen! Easy to follow which is key.....
He goes directly to the point. That´s why I watch his tutorials videos. And his English is easily understandable. Thanks for helping us all.
@KevinDR1987 Outside of a highly virtualized environment this is correct. This type of virtualization is built to work this way. The server instances are not shut down. It's the physical servers that get powered on and off. As an aside I understand what they are saying, but be careful of taking it too literally. You should maintain your systems to a degree that you are 99% sure the things will come back on if you do a reboot. Windows Server 2008 isn't NT...
Very well explained! Even though I knew some of the things that Eli covered about virtualization from reading VMware white papers, Eli helped me fully understand what I read in a very understandable and relatable way! Thanks!!!
Great Eli. U r one of the very few who has technical know-how, and the ability to articulate in simple words.
Eli...You are my favorite trainer. He explains complicated things to very simple manner... Thanks a lot...!
Dude I have tried so many courses you are straight up the best teacher I’ve encountered
Clear Explanation. I am New to virtualization, Your video helped me to improve my knowledge regarding the virtualization. Thank You
you won't get anything better than this on any Portal. Hats off to you sir. Thanks for your Videos its really good.
Hey Eli , this is my first video of yours and i am going to continue with all he videos of yours. Thank you very much !! You have a great talent of injecting things into mind so clearly and easily, thank you very much man and a great thanks

Never seen a teacher like Eli. You are just amazing Sir.
boy u got real teaching talent ...just loved it . I was litrerally glued on it for 58 min
I barely noticed this class was one hour..Hats off Sir. Thank you.
This is a great video to learn the very basics of virtualization. I've been looking for something like this for weeks, everything seems to skip over the basics. I can now say I actually understand what a hypervisor is, before it was just a word I've heard many many times. It's a shame you're not the VMware CBTnuggets guy, you would rock!
Eli with your magic you can make most complicated stuff very easy and interesting. You are just incredible.
You clearly know how to explain this compared to everyone else on KZread. Kudos you're my Go-To guy!
Ely, you're an unbelievable teacher - really! Can you also teach Calculus?

+Andy O. I agree, I would have understood Calculus better if I had a teacher like him...
Hello Eli, in case you are still reading the comments on KZread.... I have a paper to write about virtualization, and so far, nothing is as clear as your videos to summarize all the information I am actually looking for. I will most definitely quote you in my paper, but if you have any suggestion for a book or another type of papers about the subject of virtualization, I would take it happily ! Most of the papers I found are very specialized, and the book I read about OS (and their chapter on virtualization) are most often only talking about the type 2 of hypervisor ! You made things so clear. Anyway, if you don't have time I still thank you a lot for your videos, you are a great story teller and that makes your explanations about computing beautifully accessible. Many thanks
This is my first time listening to virtualization concept and got it all at once. Thanks
Clear explanations, good repetition, and excellent relation to real life examples. Great job Eli.
Thanks Eli! You explained this quite clearly for me and I appreciate it. Keep your videos coming!
Thanks a lot ELI. You are not only a computer guy;; you are a genius on computer..
been trying to understand by crap e-books but Eli you are my hero and saviour. Thanks Heaps . You are an excellent teacher !
Great and simple explanation. You don't need to be computer geek to understand what this guy is talking about. Thanks Eli !
Best presentation on visualization that I have found on KZread.
Hey Eli, I have always said that a good instructor should be able to explain a concept 4 or 5 different ways or how many times it takes for the learner to understand. Your really know this topic. It's the best explanation I've seen on virtual machines. Thanks !
Thanks Eli, 1st time I've understood more that the very basic concepts of vitrualisation. I have subscribed!
Eli is just wonderful, many thanks for his great work!!
with you as a teacher every concept is so easy to be understood . Thanks a lot Eli !!!
Thank you! This is a fantastic video that will improve the way I advise clients in software compliance audits, especially the part on licensing in the last 20 minutes. Very helpful. You got a new subscriber!
your way of teaching is very friendly and the best thing is that you are so helpful by text back the fans thank you
After watching your video,I come to know how virtualization really works. Thank you for your teaching. Keep it up man.
Really enjoyed this. Clear explanations and clear enunciation. Well structured. The level of detail remained the same throughout. Working in IT Service operations I need to know a lot computing concepts

Thank you for the Class. Great overview even a few year down the track.
Thank you sooooo much for sharing your knowledge Eli. You explain things so well that after watching your videos everything seems crystal clear.
Great tutorial pitched for first-time viewers - good high level concepts, compelling reasons for using them, and background! Good deep insight with little jargon to lose the viewer!
Hi Eli.. Loved the video...It really explains concepts of virtualization much much better than any other video online. I have one request. Your video focuses on desktop virtualization primarily. Can you also create a video that explains the concepts and architecture of application virtualization. Thanks Tanvi
Eli is the Man! He keeps it down to earth to the novice layer.
Eli, you are the man. This is very straight forward and easy to understand. Thank you.
Very Unique, never feel tired and never feel sleepy. He makes it more interesting all the time
Paused the video at 21mins just to say that how awesome you are and I wish my UNI teacher was this good :")
Eli is a great teacher. I keep coming back to his videos.
Thanks so much for this masterclass ! Eli you rock !
This is the best IT video I have watched on youtube. If you can do tutorials in other aspects of IT like Business Intelligence, I won't hesitate to pay to get the tutorials. 58mins well invested

Really great way of explanation almost all the videos i have watched ....My fav Eli the computer guy.
Thanks Eli for your detailed explanations! Great videos.
There are no words to express how deep understand about visualization. Good video for beginners.
best video ever I have seen till now! hats off, full admiration! thank you so much! :)
You are absolutely brilliant.
The example of old NT servers is very good, but also older hardware costs much more if you maintain a service agreement. However, I think the part about the electricity costing $100 a year underestimates a critical point. I think the power demand for server boxes (non-bade) is more like $200-400+ per year, and can vary not just on your per-watt-hour cost locally but the CPU usage (so who knows?). That does not take into account the cost of *cooling* a server room/data center- and that also varies dramatically based on scale. I had seen projects where $5m in hardware meant a $4m facility upgrade (power and cooling) and about $3m per year to run both power and cooling. So by year 2 the "environmental cost" ($10m) was twice the cost of the hardware, making TCO like $15m. So virtualization applied to that project today might make it $2m hardware, $2m facility, and $2m AC+HVAC for a total of $6m ops ($8m TCO). That is an oversimplification but you can easily see the impact to a companies total cost of ownership, which is why it's been a big buzzword for like 7-8 years now. :D
I just love all of your tutorial man. Thank you so much for such a good video
Awesome concept and awesomely explained. Thanks Eli
Thanks Eli - the computer Guy??? Keeping me sane and on target. Thx
