Introduction
Virtualization allows you to separate the Operating System from the underlying hardware
Virtualization is NOT the same as Cloud Computing. Virtualization is a Type of Cloud Computing.
Hypervisors are the software that Operating System "Instances" run on.
Overview
Virtualization allows you to easily migrate servers between pieces of physical hardware
Virtualization allows you to consolidate multiple cheap physical servers into one server
An "Instance" is a "Virtual Computer" installed on a Hypervisor.
Type 1 Hypervisors
Called Bare Metal Hypervisor
Installs directly on to hardware
You use Management Software installed on a different computer to manage a Type 1 Hypervisor box.
Based on XEN.
Generally the Hypervisor is free, but you pay for the Management software
Over Allocation allows you to allocate more total resources to the Instances of the operating systems then the physical server has. At any one time all Instances CANNOT use more resources then the total amout that the server has.
Type 2 Hypervisors
Called Hosted Hypervisor
Type 2 Hypervisors are installed onto an Operating System such as Windows 7, OSX or Linux. (VirtualBox, Virtual PC)
Be careful allocating resources to virtual machines. You have the ability to allocate so many resources to the virtual machines that you crash the host machine.
Networking can start acting "weird" on the host machine when Virtual Machines are running
Converting to Virtualization
Vendors of Virtualization software have "conversion" software that will convert an Operating System that installed on a Physical Computer into a Virtual Machine
Many pieces of Backup Software no backup servers directly into a Virtual Machine.
Final Thoughts...
Be careful of licensing!!! Per Server/ Per Socket/ Per Core
Virtualization software is stable, and not "cutting" or "bleeding" edge technology.
Resources
Xen
Citrix
VMWare
VirtualBox
Virtual PC

Wonderful, thank you so much :0 Most presentations, even lectures in real life, have zero redundancy and just blast through the material at incomprehensible pace. With yours, it's like... listen to it, okay, got it in one, woah. I actually understand the concept instead of just learning to parrot the words to describe it.

@KevinDR1987 Outside of a highly virtualized environment this is correct. This type of virtualization is built to work this way. The server instances are not shut down. It's the physical servers that get powered on and off. As an aside I understand what they are saying, but be careful of taking it too literally. You should maintain your systems to a degree that you are 99% sure the things will come back on if you do a reboot. Windows Server 2008 isn't NT...

Hello Eli, in case you are still reading the comments on KZread.... I have a paper to write about virtualization, and so far, nothing is as clear as your videos to summarize all the information I am actually looking for. I will most definitely quote you in my paper, but if you have any suggestion for a book or another type of papers about the subject of virtualization, I would take it happily ! Most of the papers I found are very specialized, and the book I read about OS (and their chapter on virtualization) are most often only talking about the type 2 of hypervisor ! You made things so clear. Anyway, if you don't have time I still thank you a lot for your videos, you are a great story teller and that makes your explanations about computing beautifully accessible. Many thanks

The example of old NT servers is very good, but also older hardware costs much more if you maintain a service agreement. However, I think the part about the electricity costing $100 a year underestimates a critical point. I think the power demand for server boxes (non-bade) is more like $200-400+ per year, and can vary not just on your per-watt-hour cost locally but the CPU usage (so who knows?). That does not take into account the cost of *cooling* a server room/data center- and that also varies dramatically based on scale. I had seen projects where $5m in hardware meant a $4m facility upgrade (power and cooling) and about $3m per year to run both power and cooling. So by year 2 the "environmental cost" ($10m) was twice the cost of the hardware, making TCO like $15m. So virtualization applied to that project today might make it $2m hardware, $2m facility, and $2m AC+HVAC for a total of $6m ops ($8m TCO). That is an oversimplification but you can easily see the impact to a companies total cost of ownership, which is why it's been a big buzzword for like 7-8 years now. :D
