Another fan of Tropheus here 😊, I kept a wild caught colony of T. moorii Mpulungu for many years and I absolutely loved them, as others have said they do best in large groups, they are susceptible to ‘bloat’ if they become stressed or if their diet isn’t appropriate for them, so they tend to do best if they make up the vast majority of fish in the tank, as others have done, I kept my Tropheus with a pair of Eretmodus, all the best with your Tanganyikan display, I’m sure you’ll love your fish 😊

Tropheous are the true gems of the T lake. Aggressive but outstanding colors and behavior. Need plenty of rock and algae. A big tank with about 50+ or more makes for a tremendous display . They grow to about 6in. Please look them up for the joy of it. Love the shared adventure.

Also Sardine Cichlids (from Tanganyika) are really pretty. They swim at the top of the tank. So if you can have shell dwellers at the bottom (e.g. Lamprologus ocellatus - most colourful but territorial), Julidochromis transcriptus (aka Masked Julie) in the middle in some rocks and Sardine cichlids up the top.

They're all territorial but they hold their own and each have a few spots in the wood and rocks they like to chill at. Of my 7 fish tanks the lake tanganyikan tank is probably my favorite, they have a lot of personality and spunk in a small fish.

Hi Kaity ,I've kept tangayikans for years breeding colonies of rare frontosa ,tropheus and bumble bee Cyprichomis leptosoma which are so much more colourful and just as entertaining and interesting as lelupi . Tropheus are harder to keep but so rewarding to have a colony of 12 or more types like illangi ,red rainbows , kaiser hope you have a Google at some tropheus there are plenty still in the country I think breeders on the Goldy and Sydney who import and breed them .Top vids too 🤘🤙

hey, i have kept many types of tanganyikans and if your going for a set up that you would like different spices in Xenotilapia are my favourite kind of bottom dweller mixed in with some shell dwellers. Cyprichromis are also fantastic to fill out some space at the top and you can have a wide range of colours. with some Julidochromis and leleupi that will be in and out of the rock work, it would look amazing no doubt. looking for something different though Callochromis i think are pretty interesting or Ophthalmotilapia or even Altolamprologus calvus. i currently have Tropheus and i do agree if you want that one fish as a big group in one tank i dont think you could ever go wrong with them. Lamprologus caudopunctatus im also keeping but just as a breading project, they can also inhabit shells. i hope you found some of this useful, you can find some great types of fish from tangayika that have some great creator i hope you enjoy looking into this great and not well known species.

I've been keeping nothing by Tanganyikans for almost 15 years now. Gotten Neolamprologus Brevis, Similis, Leluepi, Altolamprologus Calvus, and Cyprichromis Leptosoma to breed in my tanks. Just received some Xenotilapia Bathyphilus for the first time and I love them, though if I ever get a 6 foot tank my first choices will either be Cyathopharynx Furcifer or Enantiopus sp. Kilesa. The breeding colors on those fish rival the very best from Malawi and even a lot of Marine fish.

If you have a spare 6ft then for me it would have to be any of the tropheus species, plenty of colour and plenty of activity. They are a but pricey though as you have to buy a large size group (most recommend minimum of 12) but it's an instant wow factor I think!

The appeal of tangs are in their personality and socialization. Their socialization structures are more advanced than malawis. Frontosa may seem boring but that's bc malawi peeps put one or two with peacocks and haps. Keep a colony together and you'll see them shine.

As a keeper of tangs f9r over 12 years, I would get an open water fish leptsoma aka s ardine cichlid, which inhabits the upper water column . I would get three diffrent rock dwelling spiecis. Perhaps calvus or comps mixed with some julis and lelupi.very important to have separate rock piles and caves for each species and add all the fish at the same time to avoid dominating and bullying. Here in South Africa we are fortunate to have access to wild caught specimens, f1 is almost as good however. Enjoy 🎉

@@Kaityscichlids I also keep Black Calvis since around 2010. While they are very interesting and beautiful, it's often very difficult (at least here in Europe) to get them in a good quality (genetically). It seems there are quite some breeding lines with poor genetics around... Also, regarding Neolamprologus brevis and similar species: I am a big, big fan. They show one of the most interesting group behaviors in the aquarium hobby, imho. However, as strange as it may sound, they can quickly get "over your head" without any "predatory" species in the tank. I guess I must have hundreds of them right now in a 300 L aquarium and it's getting more and more difficult to give them away to other hobbyists...

I had Tanganica for about 15 years and if you want hold them together it would go right well. A good Mix might be Neolambrologus Brichardy ( Princes of Burundi) and Leleupi. You could also put any Julidochromis specius. With a larger Sand aria you may also mix some Multifaciatus or smaler Occelatus in it. These Spec needed a lot of Hieding Places and could feed with Proteins. If you decided to hold some Tropheus Moorii or Dubiosi you better take a Group of at lest 6 (2/4) better 10. I would recomandig a Group of 12 very young ones. They didn t fit well to Neolambrologus Spec. They could not take Protein they eat algies and wiill die from too much Protein! So it s difficult to feed them togther. But a Pair of Eretmodus Cyanosticus or other" Clowns" can easily hold together with Tropheus. Be aware the "Clowns" need to bee a Pair or be a very young Group so that a Pair can build out of it. The are very picky and would kill each other! So chose very wiesy. It might be very expensive if you take just any Male/Female. I could def tell you. But they are worse it, very nice breading, they do it together as "Maulbrüter" The Female take the eggs and the Male the Larves. So it s importend for them to be picky. In all cases (Lambrologus / Tropheus) no Plants are needed. There are no Plants in the Habitat they live in. And it couldn t be too much Stones. The highes Rock is the max of high you Fish will swim, other than your Malawi Chichs. My highes Rock reach 4 Fingers below the surface. Don t know the english expression but " Lochstein" is a good choise for Neolambrologus" but not for Tropheus. The like round rocks. And they like it big. There is no too big exept the dimension of the Tank for them. And don t take Fontosas the can reach a sice that is too big for any Tank (OK any normal Tank like yours). If you like to read more feel free to ask. Tanganica Chichlides are the best so don t buy only one of a Spec they need at least a friend or in case of Tropheus a bunch of them.

The secret to these communities is two fold. 1. LOTS of rock work and 2. Multiple fish (avoiding pairs). Too little fish and one with get singled out by another. The aggression needs to be spread out. I have a 40 breeder with about 6 aggressive tanganyikan cichlids. They have occasionally dust ups but never full on harassment.

Make sure you research (hard) before you just start buying Tanganyikans. There are so many insane ones out there, "most not at the store" and you shouldn't just put Tangy's together willy nilly for a harmonious tank...choose a primary see what it needs for a tank set up. You probably will have to buy 1" fry or fingerlings to get the type you want. Then wait years for them to grow up

I DM'd you some pics of my personal favorites on Instagram...I've been keeping African Cichlids for over 30 years, Tangy's being my favorite. They can be a challenge especially if you mix them wrong, for example... if you put herbivores with carnivores. Tanganyikan herbivores are real susceptible to bloat so the carnivore food could kill them. Plus the Tangy herbivores are mean little shits that will probably kill your carnivores.
