Regression lines as a way to quantify a linear trend. Residuals at a point as the difference between the actual y value at a point and the estimated y value from the regression line given the x coordinate of that point.

The take away message: "The way that we calculate this regression lines is all about minimizing the square of these residuals". Of note, residual is the difference between the actual value (y) and the estimated value (ŷ).

I don't know how to get the value-based off the video but here is the definition of the y intercept,. y intercept is the value of y when x = 0. For the line y = a + bx, y-intercept = a. If you look at the line it does look like -140 would where the y-intercept is. How he got it though, I have no idea.

take 2 points of the linear regression and calculate its slope (gradient) which is 14/3 but thats not the main purpose of this video so he just gave the answer directly and once u have the slope (gradient), substitute x = 0 into your linear equation to find the estimated y intercept which is -140

a form of line : y = m*x + b m: is the slope or how steep the line is b: where the line cut y-intercept the steepnesss as rise/run: x-intercept at 30. Take 30 + 3 = 33 as run and go up 14 as the rise => get the triangle with the hypotenuse as the steepness the line will cut y at : -140 as y-intercept This is just an example to illustrate the idea the best fit line which will have the least residuals or sum of errors. By giving us the anwser and compare each data points to the best estimated line If you go further to the course, he will show you the way to find m , b or 14/3 , -140

We minimize squared error for two reasons: 1. Square is always positive. We are only interested in absolute value of errors in each point. 2. Derivative of x^2 can be easily calculated: (x^2)' = 2x.

This is exactly why I hate math. Math teachers always just expect you to know certain aspects and don’t explain anything thoroughly. Where in the heck did the -140 and 14/3 come from??? And does anyone know where might be a better place to start learning if I’m having trouble understanding the equations??
