Introduction to Remote Sensing: Resampling Techniques | Part 10

In this lecture, we introduce the term resampling, which is the process of determining actual pixel values in an image to place onto a map grid using mapping polynomials. We'll delve into how we use control points to find unknown coefficients, apply these polynomials to identify points in the image, and how to handle cases when these points do not fall exactly on a pixel grid center.
Key Topics Covered:
• Mapping Polynomials: Using control points to find coefficients.
• Image-to-Map Correspondence: Relocating pixels onto correct positions
on the map grid.
Resampling Methods:
• Nearest Neighbor Resampling: Choosing the nearest recorded pixel when grid spacings match.
• Bilinear Interpolation: Linear interpolations over four surrounding pixels to estimate brightness.
• Cubic Convolution Resampling: Using cubic polynomials for smoother image correction.
• Geometric Correction and Co-Registration: Using mapping polynomials for removing geometric distortions and co-registering multiple images.
• Geocoding/Geo-referencing: Registering images to map coordinates (latitudes and longitudes).
We'll explore the practical aspects of these techniques and their applications, especially focusing on the importance of ground control points. Be sure to consider the questions at the end to prepare for our next lecture.
