Introduction to “Religion and Urbanity“ at the University of Erfurt

The centre for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences “Religion and Urbanity: Reciprocal Formations” (FOR 2779) investigates the mutual formation of urbanity and religion from antiquity to the present in South Asia, (Central) Europe and the Mediterranean. The centre hosts a large variety of international researchers who come as fellows to Erfurt. In the winter of 2021/22, the Humanities Centre for Advanced Studies “Religion and Urbanity” (FOR 2779) was positively evaluated for a second funding phase (until 2026) by the German Research Foundation. During this time, the UrbRel group will continue its work within the chosen temporal and spatial framework of the first millennium BC until today in Europe, the Mediterranean and South Asia. In addition, the group will further develop and explore the mutual formation of religion and urbanity as a fruitful perspective for research in the history of religion and urban history. The “Religion and Urbanity” group is hosted by the Max Weber Centre/ Max-Weber-Kolleg at the University of Erfurt.
