Protists were the first eukaryotes on Earth. This kingdom of organisms is unique in that none of them share any common characteristics with each other. Instead, scientists split them into groups of similar characteristics. Some protists are much more closely related to animals (the protozoans) while others share common ancestry with land plants (algae).
