Introduction to Kegging P1 - Overview
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Kegging is great. It's easy and you can mess around without hurting your beer. In this video, I go over the basics of kegging, including cleaning, taking it apart, and talking about the CO2 tank - something that has not been discussed on KZread at the time of this recording.
Link to a great site where you can read about kegging, and the tables I promised are here.

Craig, I just want to say again how thankful I am for your videos and all the effort you put into them. Not only did you help me TREMENDOUSLY when I first started brewing, but you inspired me to start experimenting with small batches and different styles. I also enjoy just watching your videos while sipping a beer just for entertainment. So much great information, such a great attitude, great presentation. Really enjoy your work. Cheers!
Craig, I've been brewing for a couple of years now (bottling) and just kegged my first batch of beer today. Thanks for taking the time to put this series together. It was just what I needed to get comfortable with the process.
Even though you put this up almost a decade ago I still to this day use it as a reference. In my early years I thought kegging was super complicated but thanks to this video I felt confident enough to take the plunge. Fast forward 6 years later and I still have yet to find a better tutorial. You’re the man, Craig! 17!

Hi Neil, 17/01/2022, and im just going to start Kegging, and your right, Craig's video is by far the most comprehensive video, i look at others and it does my head in, Craig explains it so well and takes all the complicity away, i feel more confident after watching this video, Cheers
Thanks Craig for your brilliant videos. I'm sure that this keg series alone has saved me many hours of struggling! I also like your style very much, so humble and relaxed.
Craig, thank you for doing these videos. I started brewing a little over a year ago after watching your video. Today I kegged my first beer, without your help I don't think I would have perused this hobby as willingly and without fear of making mistakes. Thank you so much for everything.
I am quite new to home brewing and completely new to kegging and was guided to this video by another community member. I've got to say that this was so helpful to get me started with this new topic, absolutely understandable and i highly appreciate the work guys like you do to spread their knowledge and experience. Cheers!
over 9 months ago i liked this vid and was at the time only dreaming of getting kegs and now iv finally done it thanks to a guy that sold me 4 gegs and a gas bottle that is full for $400 and just today i have my first keg chilling in the fridge thanks for your vids craig all the info you give to small home brewers like me help so much keep up the good work mate
Thanks Craig for the info on kegging. I really appreciate the work and effort you put into helping those like me who don't know about kegging to learn. THANK YOU
started home brewing a year ago, started with Mr Beer and now with LME. I'm also kegging now. I have been watching your video all the way through. I will try all grain soon. I'm in Hawaii, so I have to get all my stuff from the mainland. Thanks for all your help! Much Mahalo!
Thank you, Craig! I've finally taken the plunge to brew my own beer and decided that kegging is the way to go. The Cornelius keg, which you've shown, has the added benefit of the opening permitting the hand to be inserted inside, if need be, scrubbed inside for cleaning.
Thx mate from australia, great vids. ive been bottling for nearly 2 years now and have taken the plunge and ordered my keg fridge, kegs and co2. keg fridge comes with 2 taps so I'll be having a light and a dark brew on the taps. your vid has prepared me so thx and ill get back to you on the results.

Scruffnut yeah mate an Ozzie myself, definetly be Interesting the first time I do kegging I have always done bottling so I guess there is pros and cons for each method. I guess.
Crystal clear tutorial. I've only bottle-conditioned in the past. Thanks for your great effort...
Craig i love your vids, after bottling for a year i bought a kegerator with 2 taps 3 kegs, a cylinder and regulator. I will never look back. Thanks again mate and if you ever head to sydney drop in.
Outstanding information and I will watch the whole series. I'm about to start the kegging venture and your advice and hands-on videos are exactly what I needed. Cheers!
Thank you so much for this step by step set of videos!!! This was my intro to kegging and it was perfect! Really appreciate everything you have done for the hombrewing industry Craig!!! 17
Great video! Just starting out home brewing with a starter kit and not looking forward to bottling. Looks like kegging is definitely the way to go. Thanks!
This is the best video on kegging on the internet. Thanks a million. I just watched this again to brush up for my Thanksgiving brew.
This is a great helpful series on kegging. Finally got a keg now I need to give it a go. Thanks Craig
We just bought our first CO2 system and this video answered so many of my questions. Thanks Craig!
Great video. I"ve been bottling for years. It's time to step up to kegging. This helped answer numerous questions. Thanks Craig
Great video Craig! we expect nothing less from you. Thanks for the info and your views on many ,many topics.
Hi Craig Thanks for sharing your videos, always interesting to watch
Great videos. I just purchased a starter kit with keg, CO2-tank, regulator etc, and watching this helped a lot. Keep up the good work! Greetings from Norway
Still the best kegging video on youtube
Very nice, you answered all my questions easily. You're a natural, keep up the good work.
Good job Craig. This video is very helpful to me as are others I've seen. You do a great job of explaining and showing close-ups and giving text tips. Much appreciated. I'll be watching as many more of your video's as possible. Note: I'm new to Homebrewing. I now have all of the equipment, including 3 Corny Kegs. I'm just waiting on the wort chiller and then I will begin brewing. I'm sure your video's will help and I also learned from my father-n-law in Ohio over Thanksgiving. He made 3 brews!
Hey Craig keeps those bottles, kegging is a bear when you want to take it camping :)... about the video.... this is why I am so adamant about TSA being Deceptive he doesn't do his homework, he has NO hands on experience ,he teaches us nothing and he's a waste of viewers time, But you SIR take your time make it informative ,understandable and you don't talk in circles,Thank you for this and many more to come !
Thanks again Craig! You inspired me to invest into a kegging system today. I can't wait to get her going. I ran into a bit of cash, and bought myself an early x-mas present. I feel like a kid who just spent all his birthday money in the candy store.
Thanks Craig! You make the best home brewing videos.
Watching this video while drinking beer is great. Very well put together sir!
Finding this series really helpful as just looking to purchase a keg
love your work was just looking for the pressure to carbonate the beer but learn a few more tips thanks for the video i think you have helped a lot of people and make a good teacher... Just awesome!!!
Thanks for this, Craig. I'm getting into kegging and your tutorial is very helpful.
great video, apart from low res its the best explanation i've seen yet. and i've seen a few!
The videos were made 3 months apart, I guess things change when a company is giving you money to endorse their somewhat unnecessary product! I have just started home brewing and find your videos very helpful, you're clearly passionate about it. Thanks for your help!
2020 still the best tutorial for new brewers!
Craig, thank you so much for these wonderful videos! I've just recently gotten into home brewing and have only done bottling, but am eager to get into kegging. These videos have been very informative! Thanks!!
Great video - thanks! I just purchased a keg system and this was just what I needed.
Thanks for the video, I am new to brewing and have a small keg, this was very helpful.....
There are many videos about kegging homebrew, this is the best.
This is an awesome video. I realise you made it a long time ago now but thanks very much for making it.
Great video! Quick easy instructions without all the "BS". Love it!
Just ordered 2 ball lock kegs in Ireland at a steal of 40 squid a piece. Videos are great, Always learn something new. building up to kegging but my research tells me co2 tanks are hard to refill in Ireland unless you own a bar....
Amazing video for this newbie...thank you!
I have the 5lb CO2 tank (actually I have 2. Here, the 2 places that re-fill tanks do it only on Thursdays, so if you have one tank, you might be without gas for several days). The 5 lb tank has enough gas to push out 10 full sized (15.5 gal) kegs. Its small, fits in the fridge, it's light and easy. For most people it will last a year. I recommend that size. Good job Craig.
Great vid Craig. I hope this gets TSA on the right track when he gets to kegging his first concoction.
Thanks Craig. What a great video!
Crap! I've been looking for sound, common sense, easy to follow videos on kegging for a week now! Thank you for the great great video! I was able to take apart my keg for the first time with your video. Very educational. Getting ready to build a 4 tap keezer but have a week and a half left on a brew that I want to be my first kegging, now that i know the trick with no fridge, i'm not stressing at all.
Like Scruffnut, just preparing myself for kegging also after many years of bottling. Trying to familiarise myself as mush as possible. Cheers
Very good instructional video. Quality work, thanks!
awesome Intro...looking forward to getting involved with my first carbonated home brew soon. Cheers! #beerlove
Just viewing the videos before I start in to home brewing... definitely will be aiming to keg my beer eventually.
Been Kegging for Years now. Made somewhere in the neighborhood of a thousand plus gallons so far. What Craig is saying is spot on I quit the bottling for the same reasons he gave. Another was simply a pain in the ASS. If I wanted to watch beer in a bottle do it's thing for a couple weeks forget it. I want to be able to get drinkable beer as soon as a couple days rather than 2 weeks. Screw bottles. IMHO
Hey Craig, awesome keg setup video. It will definitely get me motivated now to do it! - and hopefully others as well. I thought I commented on this video already but noticed I didn't...thats like sacriligious ;) Keep them coming man! cheers!
Thanks a ton Craig. I've been making wine for months and dabbled in beer, just got a few kegs from a relative for 11 bucks a keg. Going to try things out.
Great explanation as usual Craig , now i know how the ins and outs of the co2 and outlet of the keg works.10 out of 10 for show and tell , keep the good work up , happy chilling mate :-) Thanks
@pkdiddy Thanks for the advice, i was not aware of that. I have found that the "lube" around the keg O rings on the connects isn't really needed. But i have found around the lid gasket helps give a better seal. But that's just my way of doing it :)
Thank you sir! Great Video!
Great video, again. Cornelius makes most kegs, ball type for Pepsi, pin type for Coke, etc. Gotta be careful about saying room temp is ok, it's already hot here, we air condition down to 78F & at that temp, my beer won't carbonate and may even spoil unless I use my non-frig kegs like bottles, add some sugar and let them carb naturally. I use 3 gal kegs (see in my video), force carb 1 in my frig, sugar-carb 1 in the closet, per batch of beer. Wish you'd done this b4 I started kegging. Thanks.
@CraigTube good point. Since the keg draws from the bottom, it would make sense to rack at least once - even twice before kegging IMO...
Great video. Looking forward to the next kegging vid. Cheers.
Great video.
@CraigTube thanks for the quick answer i might need to give kegging a try in the near future, bottles is just so much work when your using 0.33 Cl bottles hehe gets kinda too many bottles :) looking forward to more videos, have been watching your channel since your first "how to make beer" videoes. they were realy helpfull, thank you for all the great videos your making
I also do mixed drinks from a keg rum and coke or rye and coke already mixed in the keg for when I go camping
Awesome, thank you.
Thank you, sir! This was very helpful.
Great video!
My preference is to add priming sugar when I keg and give it two weeks just like bottling. You get a much smoother carbonation without that carbonic bite that you sometimes get with forced carbonation. Besides a few other differences, I also put a beverage disconnect on my CO2 tank, and connect that to the beer out connect and put a few sec layer of CO2 in the keg before even racking the beer in. Then use that same connection to pressurize and burp it before setting it aside to carbonate.
you're my bro for life brotha
Cheers man! Very informative
Nice one Craig. I have home brew stock in my Pharmacy. I'm now thinking of repackaging the KY as KegY gel for the shy customers. Perhaps with clear directions to apply to the o-ring... perhaps not
I also have a pin lock keg, I just use a screwdriver on the pin at the top of the (gas in) valve to purge.
Pretty cool way of doing it Craig!
well done craig! probably your best video yet. didn't take you long to get accustomed to it all. Out of interest, how long is your beer line and what pressure do you serve at?
@CraigTube Wow this makes my transition to kegging a little more quicker.....bottles are ok for portability, but kegging is waaay better for convenience...Thanks Craig..look forward to your other vids.. ^5
Great video. Thanks.
Craigtube thanks for your video , much appreciated.
@ACTeslaMachineDC I split the batch into two 3-gallon kegs, one goes in the frig and the other I sugar-carb in the closet. (a 5 imperial gallon batch pretty much fills up two 3 US gallon kegs). But no, I cannot leave a keg sitting out in this heat without it sugar-carbing, because the beer spoils, and it would be a real hassle trying to keep it constantly iced down for a couple of weeks instead.
I love all your video's criag. You are the one that got me into home brewing but i just dont have space for 5g keg. Ive looked at alot of alternatives using 5L kegs and reusing them in a mini kegarator. I saw the home on draft system. I saw the 2.5 and 3G kegs and have been looking for a good way to do this. I really dont like the amount of time it takes to bottle condition and thought maybe it would be something you could share if you had any ideas. Thanks Again! Chad
Great intro to kegging!
Hi Craig im wondering if you have avideo on how to put together the ball lock onto the lines
Great video.
Thank you great INFO!
Nice video Craig. Im looking forward to the actual kegging. There's one thing I was wondering about though: can you carbonate beer in a keg and then bottle it via the tap? Theres this joint in NoviSad that started brewing their own beer (first microbrewery in Serbia); their beer is awesome but they only have it on tap, and Id like to take some back to the Netherlands next time I visit .... thnx
Great Demo !
I've been told you can use Vasoline (petrolium jelly) to lube everything up. I personally use the "special" keg lube. My gas bottle has been going for a year now....they last ALONG time. I've had beer go up my gas line and so far i haven't had any problems.
Great Video :) just what I need to know.
i'm having beers watching this lol thanx mate from Queensland Australia
Great stuff, thank you!
absolutely great video!! i'll be purchasing a kegging system as soon as possible, thank you so much for the easy instructions! one quick question: how many time beer can be left in the keg after carbonating it? thank you in advance for the answer and sorry for my english (i'm italian and i follow your videos from the very first hombrewing instructions you made, that really helped me a lot!)
Craig! You're like the Mr. Rogers of home-brewing!
@threeque Your right. I believe its every 5 years for corny kegs if used for commercial purposes , you wont have to if you use it for personal use I believe. From what I read ,to get a CO2 filled I know the tank has to updated/certified or they can refuse to fill them.
Great video's I was wondering after 1 week of fermenting placing the beer in the keg add CO2 and leave for 3 weeks and the filter beer from one keg to another to get rid of any particulates then carbonate? Thanks Carter
Question: is there anything wrong with carbonating beer outaide of the fridge, then filling up a growler once in a while, and then cooling the growler in the fridge? I guess the reason why I'd be doing that is due to limited space in the fridge.
Craig, i just was given 3 kegs and noted that two don't have a relief valve like you demo'ed in you videos. Would these be older kegs and should I change out the tops ?
@CraigTube First of all, thanks a bunch for this. It's important to note though, that you can still "bottle-condition" by adding the appropriate amount of priming sugar into the keg and then adding over-pressure for pumping after a couple weeks. Obviously you would want to to purge a little if possible (methodology?), but I wonder if comparing bottling to kegging whether it would really make a difference. After all, there's air in each bottle when capping that's sealed off.
Craig. Thanks for the video. I'm going to keg my first batch of homebrew this weekend. I got the Mark II keg washer. I'm going to hook it up to the keg beer in connect and run PBW through it. Then i'm gonna run StarSan through it. Do you think that this method will be good enough to clean and sanitize without taking apart the keg? So far the Mark II works pretty well for carboys and beer lines. Keep up the good work on the videos and thanks for the KY tip.. ;)
Great tutorial ! , thanks ! :D
I will soon get into kegging, it's the natural next step after a year with bottling. So my first and best source of information are your introduction to kegging-videos. :) I see that you put the tap on top of the keg, it made me remember from another video, it fell down and you lost a whole keg... :( I was thinking, is it an idea to put the hose (black valve) through the handle on the back, and make it more stable that way, and make a clamp or something? Thanks for the great videos!! Cheers!
Get a diptube brush also. When you first acquire a keg you definitely want to scrub the interior of the liquid diptube since you don't know what kind of deposits/crud might be in there.
