In this video, we’re going to talk about a SCADA software called Ignition by ‪@InductiveAutomation‬.
We’ll learn what Ignition is and what makes it unique from other SCADA software applications. Then, we’ll dive into how the Ignition SCADA platform works by going over its core modules so that you’ll have a basic knowledge before getting started on your first Ignition project.
Ignition is known for powerful and modern graphical objects, its web-based architecture, its unlimited licensing structure, and its developer-friendly tools.
Ignition is an IT and network-based software. As an automation professional, a working IT knowledge base is becoming virtually a requirement for modern industrial applications.
Ignition is what is called cross-platform. This means that it can be used on most standard computer operating platforms such as MAC OS X, Windows, and Linux distributions.
Ignition is also able to handle many standard external devices and databases.
Ignition uses an unlimited licensing structure.
Ignition’s application development tool is called Ignition Designer. Ignition Designer has modern graphical objects built-in and utilizes a popular and powerful programming language called Python for their native scripting.
Ignition SCADA software is built and sold by modules.
There are a couple of Ignition modules that are essential.
- Ignition Platform module includes tags, designer clients, and drivers that allow you to connect to necessary devices and databases, such as PLCs and SQL databases.
An OPC UA Server module is also included with this module.
OPC UA stands for Open Platform Communications United Architecture.
Tags and databases are the backbones of a SCADA operation.
Depending on your industrial application, you can have hundreds or even thousands of tags or database points.
- The next essential Ignition module is in the visualization category. One of SCADA’s main functions is to visually display important plant operations and data in a graphical user interface.
This interface can belong on an HMI out on the plant floor, on several monitors in a control room, on an engineer’s laptop, or even a smartphone.
Ignition has two options for this. There is the Vision module or the Perspective module.
1) The Vision module is Ignition’s classic visualization software that they have been supporting for many years. This module is designed to be used on desktop screens and traditional plant floor HMIs.
2) The Perspective module is Ignition’s new and modern approach to visualization software. It is fully web-based which will allow you to launch your industrial application from anywhere on a web browser so long as you’re safely connected to the plant network.
You can also use what is called kiosk mode for a more traditional feel that works well with control room monitors and plant floor HMIs.
- Other important modules include the Alarm Notification module, the Tag Historian module, and the Reporting module.
1) You can use Ignition’s Alarm Notification to set up alarms and notifications on the local application, and/or via email, phone call, or SMS text message.
2) You can use Ignition’s Reporting module to automatically generate and send data in a PDF format.
3) We can use this data to set up graphical trends of historical data. This makes Ignition’s Tag Historian module an important one to use.
- There are several other native Ignition modules, partner modules to achieve advanced project-specific goals and even third-party modules developed by Ignition users like you and me.

The basic Ignition platform already comes with basic alarming features (alarm list and alarm historian/alarm journal)... The alarm notification module is required if you want to extend the alarm features to SMS, E-mail, rostering and other more advanced alarm features....

After years of having to put up with Rockwell Software's terrible and bug shit city Factory Talk, I went with Ignition. I will never again use a Rockwell Software based HMI product. There's a saying amongst controls people, we all love Allen Bradley (great PLCs) but HATE Rockwell Automation! Ignition is a fantastic company, and they don't consider customer service as a profit center (unlike Rockwell!).

Hi, I’m looking to use ignition to build an interface that retrieves and displays information from the SQL server. The interface would allow me to add a location label to the data. The data is then sent back to my SQL server. What tutorials should I focus on? Would love some recommendations. I have connected it to my SQL server.

Well, the technical specifications and features are kind of expected for today’s SCADA. The most unique point probably is Python.

Other than python scripting, I feel the major differentiator is the unlimited tags and client licenses.. database connection is also handled very nicely.. free trial license 2 hours extendable for demo, training and engineering .. easy and light installation... I can go on and on, been using Ignition for about 3 years and have never looked back :)

Even though Ignition version 8.0 introduced a host of new bugs, and really screwed up a lot of the designer UI strengths from version 7.x, they're still far and above all the other SCADA software options. By miles. Wonderware is a dinosaur that is both more difficult to use and more limiting to customers. Any other option you could name is just an "also-ran" that will never grow unless Inductive stumbles. In my view so far (having personally crossed the 7.9 to 8.0 barrier), Perspective is currently still stumbling, but improving. Vision is easier to use and has more plant control based tools, Perspective requires you to have familiarity with web design - which many SCADA designers simply did not have up until this point, because it's just a foreign concept to the way things have been built for decades. Perspective is also more geared towards lists, popup tables, and other so-called "high performance HMI" features. It's not very high performing yet, but I'm sure by the time we get to Ignition 8.9 the tools will be much easier to use and the implementations much better than they are today.

It's a great software but a expensive one, Ignition is well suit for large projects or big companies. If I have to work with a few tags or small projects I rather to use Indusoft

You can go with edge licenses for smaller projects... Or go with the normal base with limited client license... The software is very scalable, had few experiences where customer started with very small system and extend until full blown system..

hi I have compact logix studio 5000 plc , customer is using ignition. I check your video ignition can directly read the plc as long the setup opc built in for ignition. So my side not need do any software or programming ? Just connect and browse the plc tag through my plc Boolean or any tag right ?

Logix Studio 5000 is the programming software for CompactLogix and ControlLogix PLC's. These PLC's usually require RSLinx to provide OPC access to the PLC tag database. On the ignition side, you can use the OPC module or a specific PLC driver to communicate with the PLC. See: docs.inductiveautomation.com/display/DOC79/Drivers

Is there any app available to practice the ignition coding ?

  • @realpars

    @realpars

    Жыл бұрын

Hi there, I would say that the best way to practice any coding or scripting would be to download ignition and practice directly on their software (it’s free to demo). Together with the extensive documentation and instructional videos that you can find from Inductive Automation (company that makes Ignition) practicing with their software would be the best way to go. There is something called Inductive University on their website that has a lot of training content. Hope this helps!

It can, either through SQL or RestAPI connection. I have not done this myself, but it appears others have with success. Ignition is very flexible and can employ almost any data connection method you can think of. The Web module for Ignition is likely the easiest way to connect to MatLab.
