I came back to watch again. Really impressed by your videos and all the info on your website. Tons of info right on the page with your Zephyr rocket. Can't wait for you to get those back in stock so I can start building a level 1 cert rocket. Very impressed by the kit. I'm checking local hobby stores to see if any of them carry high power rockets so I can look at some stuff in person. I may have to go 20 or 30 miles across KC Metro area to go to one though. Currently building low power kits and I have one mid power to build and keep me busy. 🚀

In 14 and certified Jr. L1 with a CTI h120 red lightning. My rocket flew very straight. Great video!

Awesome video and very informative!

I got my level 1 certification with the Madcow Torrent on an I-223 skidmark AND dual deploy with the Stratologger altimeter.....perfect flight......drogue popped at apogee then the main at 700 feet......only a 20 yard walk to recover.....flew to almost 2800 feet.

Yes...three certification levels. A "high-powered rocket" is one with a mass greater than 1500 grams (weighs more than about 14.7 Newtons), and the formal certification levels are based on the size of the motor that powers the rocket: Level 1 (H, I), level 2 (J, K, L) and level 3 (M, N, O). The size H engine/motor total thrust is 160.01 - 320 Newton-seconds, and the subsequent levels basically double after that. Check out NFPA 1127 for more definitions and regulations.

I just recently bought an Aerotech SUMO. I just completed it. It stand 39” tall and has a 4” diameter. I am new to the hobby, although I have launched 2 much smaller model rockets a long time ago. Does anyone know exactly what model I have built? If so, should I use a “G” or an “H” engine and what type of launch pad should I purchase since it is rather large? I was unable to find videos of someone assembling my exact model and I had some trouble assembling the Aerotech SUMO, because the instructions were not the clearest and neither were any of the illustrations. I feel like I did some steps incorrectly such as the “piston” thingy and the shock cord and parachute installation, which are very important since I want it survive at least one launch and landing. Any help or guidance is much appreciated! Thank you. I need a decent amount of help and I want to make sure everything is all good with the assembly and engines before I blast it off.

Huh, I didn't even know rockets HAD certifications at a certain point (Estes rockets where about as far as I ever got.) I assume that the 'E' and 'G' are listed in order of size, like Estes A, B, C, D, ect.

your videos are so informative. I made 4" rocket engine have 6mm throat and when it ignite then it was burst very dangerously. so guide us for making throat

We don't have information on making rocket engines. What you experienced with your bursting motor is exactly why we recommend people buy motors made by professionals. Sorry. I don't know where you can buy motors in your country.

Use upswept fins like that super DX3 so they wont break off on a hard landing. And thats why they have different propellant types so you can get the launch speed you want/need. Shorten your delay on windy days where you are not going straight/verticle

I just experienced the problem with not taking advice and what it may cost you … I built a wildman dark star flew it on a I 280 dm at 4000 ‘ plus she was gone from sight and no recovery was made. No certification no machine to fly again ! I live in Vegas and took a gamble 🙁Oct we will try again low and slow. I will be starting a new build here in a few weeks

Hey Tim, at 6:07 in this video you mention another video on how to remove the spring engine clips... I've scoured the advanced construction videos list and I can't see any that contain steps for removing those hooks. What's the actual title? Or could you link to it here on KZread? Thanks!

You need to remove it from the kit (the collection of unbuilt parts), prior to building the model. Then, you need to add back a new retention device. For that, you can see kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZGaluLytfsWelZs.html. If you have to remove the engine mount entirely, that is major surgery. You'll have to remove the rings from inside the rocket, and that is tough. There is a good chance of damaging the rocket. Be careful when you do it. awww rats... I was hoping when Tim said you needed to remove it, that he had some method of removing it from an already built rocket... not just skipping it in the build in the first place. :) Guess I'm back to the Dremmel removal plan....

Maybe. As long as the motor is commercially made and available to everyone, and has been through safety certification by the NAR, CAR or Tripoli. There are some hybrid motors that might be allowed (which use compressed gas).

When I was young I did not need no certification to build a rocket that I built I lost three of them because they went so high up you couldn't see him no more so I don't need certification to be able to be on my own

How much experience should you typically have going into your hpr lvl 1 cert? How many launches do typically have going into their hpr lvl 1?

Remember that certification is a "safety training" process. So your question in my mind is: "how long does it take to prove a person is taking all the right precautions to be safe?" This is a difficult one to answer with a number. It depends more on the person. Everyone, and I mean 'everyone' assumes that what they are doing is safe. It is like asking a person: "do you think you're smart?" Of course you're going to say "Y-E-S." Personally, I think experence plays a big part in safety training. You can't go wrong by building up a high number of number of flights. How many flights did NASA have to go through before they felt confident enough to put a man on top of the rocket?

how would I go about firing off a two stage rocket . And why is necessary to have the rocket stay in one piece on return.

9:49 claims 550’ but the link to their site says 40’. Pretty big difference.

Nope! If you're under 18, but older than 14, then you can get a Junior Level 1 Cert, which lets you fly H and I motors.

The requirements depends on who you plan on certifying with (NAR or Tripoli) In essence, you must do your attempt on an H or an I motor in order to get certification. There are a few differences between NAR and Tripoli (Example: NAR allows clusters as long as at least one motor is an H, Tripoli does not) Also once you cert with one association, you can roll over your cert to the other later should you decide to join both.

In my experience, with NAR launches, the motors have to be NAR certified. I attended my first launch with a homemade sugar motor and they told me they don't allow experimental motors

That is correct. Because of the liability insurance requirements, the NAR does not allow experimental (home-made) motors at their launches. It isn't to limit your fun. It just means you have to be creative in new ways instead of trying to come up with a new formulation of propellant.

There is at least one club that I know of that does allow experimental propellant, and that is the Maryland Delaware Rocketry Association (MDRA). I don't know if that is a Tripoli thing, or if only certain Tripoli clubs allow it. Also, it is my understanding that experimenting with new composite propellants is not only extremely difficult, but very expensive if you mess up. I have experimented with dry-packing sugar-based propellant to make E motors, but those don't provide nearly as much kick as composite fuel, and in my experience, the nozzle blows apart very often causing an instant pressure drop and loss in thrust

That would be a motor called a "G80." If the letter in the name-designation is an H or higher, it is automatically a high power motor. Additionally, if the number after the letter is greater than 80, it is also classified as being high power. So the G80 is the biggest one you can get without going through the certification process.

A bit of cardboard tube would do. But I'd say buy motors rather than make them.

Watched 5 minutes and the requirements for level 1 certification were not mentioned. This comes across like a sales pitch for a couple different rockets. Good vibe though.

What if you are far away from the people who tell you if you pass the certification?

There is NO option for self-certification. People further out in no-man's land than you have travelled to get certified. You can too if you want it badly enough.

The grain is a single piece of propellant in a solid rocket motor, regardless of size. It's important because it's what makes your rocket fly.

You can get high power certified when you are 16 years old. It is called a Junior certification, because you still need an adult to stand by your side.

You need to be at least 14 to qualify for the Junior High Power Participation Program. You would also need an adult to help you purchase the motors required as there is age limits on those as well. If you go to our website and select the applicable kit then we have a motor chart with the recommended motors listed. For the Cosmodrome Nike Smoke that we sell we do not have an "H" motor listed. For the Estes kit you would need to search through their product page and or instructions for their recommendations.

People have used Estes Pro Series Builder kits for L1 certification. But they build them stronger in order to handle an H engine.

It is a horribly expensive, over-priced hobby and there is no reason for it except for the greed of people who make these model kits.

It is my hummble opinion that a motor is reusable , to be called "motor" we must be able to reuse the device itself

Got to have certs for drones. Got to have certs for rockets. When I used to do this stuff, there were no certs. You had rc plane, rc heilos, rc boats, rc cars. Model rockets of all sizes and motor combinations. My brother built a 7 1/2 ft rocket, 2 stage, went well over a mile high. Nobody cared. What the hell happened? Gee, I know; Dems, al queda, and isis. In that order!

When you get your certification, you're now a full-fledged member of Tim's sausage fest....

I don't know why you are being sarcastic. Apogee produces a LOT of videos that they make available for free. They don't just sell, they market and support their products. What other vendor has live chat available. I don't buy everything from Apogee but for high power they have nearly everything I need.

Aren't licences just a legal way to collect a tax or fee to allow someone to do something or for a select few to control that activity????? Just because a person has a little piece of paper saying they 'know the rules' does not make them more knowledgable or safer. Some of the most dangerous, cocky and 'stupid' people are the ones with licenses to do something. At the rate things are going in this country, it won't be long before we have to have a license to live, eat, breath, sleep or just to exist.

these guys are always sold out on there website .....everything you look at is sold out sold out ...found a better and more reliable source online I don't purchase from these guys anymore

Our apologies for being sold out. The problem is our vendors can't keep up with our demand. We always order months before we thing we'll sell out, but the suppliers don't seem to fill orders quick enough. We are doing more and more production in house, because of this problem. Those items with the Apogee brand on them are the ones we control, and you'll notice they are rarely out of stock.

If an item is out of stock you can sign up for an email alert. If Madcow or any other vendor is out of stock Apogee is at their mercy.
