Hello Ines, Just reaching out to you to say - “hvala, hvala, hvala, hvala puno”. Your videos are the ultimate resource for learning Croatian for English native speakers. I love it how you go over every single detail for each grammar point. Please, continue making these videos the exact same way you are. When explained clearly and properly, these grammar details are actually not hard for me to understand, I just need to put in the effort, time and patience to remember them all 😊. I am part of the “dijaspora” and many people in the “dijaspora” who have known Croatian their whole lives can be dismissive towards the efforts required to learn the language. This can be discouraging for a learner who’s a member of the “dijaspora”, because it can make them feel they’re not smart because they just cannot simply pick up the language. Even though these self-appointed Croatian language experts have never studied the language themselves or are never capable of providing explanations for why a learner may have said a word or sentence wrong ☹. However, Croatians in the “Domovina” are far warmer towards you when you speak Croatian, even at an extremely poor level, compared to members of the “dijaspora” 😊. Just one quick question: Do you plan on doing an individual video on each of the verb tenses in Croatian you have not yet touched?? I have already made notes from the three verb tenses videos you have already made, past-perfect, present and future I (in addition to all your other videos 😊). I think knowing all the grammar for verbs plus what you have already covered for nouns and adjectives would give a learner a solid foundation when their speaking Croatian. P.S: I made this account just to give you an extra subscriber and like all your videos. I have never bothered to that do before with any youtube channels and videos 😊

I do apologize for such a late, late reply since YT must have picked up on this being the new channel and moved your comment into "held for review" and I didn't even see it until today! I also hope you will read this reply, not sure if you're checking your other channel's activities. I can imagine how frustrating it can be to struggle with the language which is your native tongue, yet, if you didn't have the chance to speak it at home, I don't see how you could have learned a language this hard by simply belonging to the Croatian culture. So, be kind to yourself and take things slow. Learning it outside of Croatia where you're not immerged in it is even harder. I am so proud of all of your efforts and people like you how are determined to learn. Kudos to you and great job! And keep up the good work! I am trilled with the responses I get from "dijaspora" and people attempting to learn. It motivates me to no end to keep going and try to make our grammar as familiar and as easy as possible. Everything complex can be explained, it just takes a lot of time. That's why I'm pretty slow with my videos, but I don't intend to stop. I am so happy that you have found them helpful! To answer your question about the verbs, yes I have made videos about the past, present and future, but I also intend to cover the other tenses as well. @@learncroatian9135 I think videos about the cases are something really important, and it's funny because when studying most languages, the native people don't focus much on that part of the grammar, they usually barely mention the cases, the rules and move along quickly... which I think is a lack of empathy, specially because most people watching are english speakers (I'm from Brazil, so Portuguese as well), which are languages that don't have cases, therefore, it's something totally alien to us, that requires practice, lots of examples, and teaching with repetition and patience, which is something you are very good at. I know because I have studied Greek, which has cases as well, but Croatian is much harder in comparison! We really need more videos about cases with example sentences and the rules.

Thanks for this as always Ines. I was curious about the perfective and imperfective verbs - specifically with a verb like pisati which has two endings that I've found (Zapisati and Napisiti) Can you explain?

Zdravo, Kathryn! You are correct, "spavaj" is imerative. You could also use a more complex imperative "idi spavati" - go to sleep (go to bed). Spavati is then the infinitive while "idi" is imperative.

@@KathrynSrce3719 Both are used, depending on the context, just like in English. If you want to use the imperative - to go bed, then use the - idi spavati instead of - spavaj. That's a good idea! I will put it on the list. I'm working on all the tenses at the moment.

I have a question, can perfective verbs exist in the present tense with present meaning? Give me examples. If razumljevati is the imperfect of razumieti, how come "I understand" is razumiem and not razumljievam? When is razumljievam used?

Yes, perfective verbs can be used in the present as well. They don't really depend on a tense, almost every verb is either perfective or in perfective. Consider "razumijevam" as a progressive continuous action, as "I am understanding". Razumijem as a finished action in the present - I understand. This particular verb isn't very commonly used in the imperfective form, even though it exists. Most of the time you will use the perfective form - razumijem. I understand what you are saying. - Razumijem što govoriš. Does this answer your question?

The difference is always the same, it's either a continuous action or a finished action. Trenutno *pišem* pismo. Kad ga *napišem*, poslat ću ga. At the moment I'm *writing* a letter. Once I *write* it, I will send it.

Ćao, Patricio! Dobro sam, hvala ti :) Thank you for your comment. First of all, I'm glad you find the content helpful. I'm working on the major grammar features of Croatian, but it's a slow process. I'll get to the pronouns in a little bit but there will definitely be a detailed video about them. As for your questions - njegov/njezin/njihov are all possessive pronouns. The difference between njegov and njezin is the gender. Both are 3rd person singular - njegov (his), njezin (her). Njezin can also be "njen". Njihov is also a possessive pronoun, but 3rd person plural - their. "Svoj" is also a possessive pronoun, but there's not a corresponding pronoun in English, so it's a little harder to explain. Svoj is a possessive pronoun that expresses that something belongs to the subject of the sentence. For instance - Imam svoju sobu (I have my own room); Imaš svoju sobu (You have your own room), Oni imaju svoju sobu (They have their own room). This pronoun changes genders depended on the noun by which it stands. Soba (fem) - svoja soba (N fem.). Imaš li svoga psa? (Do you have your own dog?) etc. I hope this helps, Patricio! @@learncroatian9135 Thank you very much for your explanation Ines!! I'll try to put an example to illustrate more accurately why I'm doubtful about the pronoun "Svoj". I've seen a sentence on a website (I believe ig) where it said "On voli svoju mačku" and I don't understand why it goes "svoju" instead of "njegovu". Another example I have seen was: "Volim svoju knjigu" (this person was referring to himself). And my question was the same: ¿Why it goes "svoju" instead of "moju" ? I think that is what really confuses me. But it's okay!! I totally understand it's a long process, I'll patiently wait for your video! I'm gonna figure out this! Regards! :)

@@patricioklaric6358 I see how this can be so confusing. So, think of it this way - whenever the object is referring to the subject itself, you always use "svoj/svoja/svoje". That's why "On voli svoju mačku" - he loves his own cat. The object is referring to the subject. However, "on voli njenu mačku" - he loves her cat - the object doesn't refer to the subject anymore so you need to use the regular possessive pronoun. Does this make sense?

Jako zanimljiv video, hvala na njemu! Malo mi nedostaju muški oblici perfekta. Ako, naime, gledam iz perspektive nekoga, tko uči hrvatski, on će dobiti uvid u ženski perfekt (pisala sam, pisala si, pisala je), a neće čuti da i muški oblik (pisao sam) prolazi isti perfekt. Isto tako bi bilo zgodno, objasniti, kako se tvori perfekt, tj. da se nastavak infinitiva, u slučaju glagola pisati "-ti" zamjenjuje nastavkom perfekta, koji je određen spolom osobe, koja govori. Umjesto nastavka ti u slučaju ženske osobe stavljamo "-la" i dobijemo "pisala", a u slučaju muške osobe stavljamo "-o" i dobijemo "pisao". To je nama, koji govorimo hrvatski, jasno, ali za nekoga, tko tek uči, to je važan i ponekad zbunjujući detalj (u engleskom ili u njemačkom primjerice nemam šanse da po obliku glagola u perfektu otkrijem dali je subjekt muška ili ženska osoba), koji mi u ovom videu nažalost malo nedostaje. Ali to nipošto ne umanjuje vrijednost ovog videa, jer ako usvojim ono, što mi ovaj video govori, već ću moći tako govoriti hrvatski da me ljudi razumiju (iako bi zvučalo malo čudno da ja kao muškarac kažem "pisala sam pismo"). Ali svakako hvala na ogromnom trudu i na mnogim detaljima, koji itekako pomažu u ispravnom učenju jezika!

Hvala puno na detaljnom feedbacku! Izvrsno! Jako cijenim povratnu informaciju izvornih govornika jer je tako lako previdjeti neke stvari. Apsolutno se slažem da nedostaju neke stvari u ovom videu, ali razlog tomu je što je cilj bio pojasniti 5 gramatičkih kategorija glagola i ne ulaziti suviše u detalje (iako se i to moglo). Ima doduše i drugi video koji objašnjava perfekt u kojem su zastupljena sva tri roda. Hvala puno na povratnoj informaciji!

Možda, budući da postoji drugi video sa tematikom perfekt u sva tri roda, ne bi bilo loše, ubaciti negdje u opisu ovog videa da taj video postoji i da se ovdje na primjeru ženskog roda pojašnjava 5 gramatičkih kategorija glagola. No to je samo ideja, koja ne umanjuje vrijednost videa ili truda, koji je u taj video uložen. Budući da i sam jesam dijete dijaspore i da živim cijeli život u Austriji, susrećem ljude, koji uče hrvatski (i sam još učim, jer u doba mog odrastanja vladao je sustav bivše države) i koji onda "pokupe" i štošta krivo, jer govornici ni ne znaju da je to dijalekt, krivo spojeno i sl. Svakako od srca hvala na trudu oko svakog od tih videa, jer svaki od njih pruža priliku, naučiti nešto o našem hrvatskom jeziku.

You should have said “wrote a BOOK , not a letter because it’s confusing since write/Posen and letter/piano both start with PIS and different endings, then you put some words in white in your word for letter is in white what you change the word that stands to write in red so we think the white goes with white and not the red. Also the font-the a and the o looks the same-hard to differentiate.

Do croats really say slova cao with the croatian "ch" sound? Isn't "cao" italian?

Great question! Yes, we say it with the "ch" sound and yes, I believe ciao is originally Italian. But, we've adopted it.

Hello, I like the way you talk and I like you, but all that you say is very easy and absolutely obvious to everyone who speaks a slavic language or learned any other popular european language apart from English. I'm not sure if such detailed theoretical introduction is necessary. For me there is just too much English and too little Croatian in your classes. Maybe I'm telling you this because I'm just getting bored finding everywhere basics of Croatian and not being able to find anything at a higher lever. It is quite easy to find basic courses of Croatian or Serbian everywhere, either online or in bookshops. How about learning some intermediate or advanced Croatian?? learning how to converse on different topics, learning some culture and history of the country in Croatian of course. This is what many learners and fans of Croatia desperately need. Najlepse pozdrave;);)

Hello, Rafal! Thank you for your feedback! It's very hard to accommodate everyone's needs on a channel. I've not had much time to work on it lately, but there are a variety of topics that are planned. The first ones are concerning the beginners explanations because the majority of videos out there don't give a very detailed explanation of the grammar. I do hope to get to more advanced things in the future. Would you let me know what you would be interested in learning specifically? That would help me greatly in order to plan for the future.

Everyone learns a language in a different way and it also much depends what your native language is. I'm Polish and my language is slavic, related to Croatian so I take for granted grammatical cases and genders. I know well how they generally work. Of course, it looks a bit differently in every slavic language. As I told you before it is extremely hard to get any stuff for more advanced Croatian. I'm sure many people would be interested in advanced Croatian classes, because Croatia is one of the most popular holiday destinations, some people might go there for other reasons as well and also many people might have Croatian friends and acquaintances. What would I be interested in when learning Croatian? Generally eveything about Croatia; culture, places, history, food, work, everyday language and useful expresions. Everything which could be practical🙂

But yes, I totally get that having a background in Slavic languages would make learning Croatian so much easier! It could be tricky though, too. When I was in Poland once, I remember I was confused about direction words, left, right and straight ahead 😂

@@learncroatian9135 You're very welcome!🙂 Yes it is much easier to learn Croatian when you are a native speaker of a Slavic language, however Slavic languages have always the so called "false friends" which means words sounding very similar but having totally different meaning which could be cofusing sometimes. When it comes to directions in Polish, left is lewo(read levo) , right is prawo(pravo) straight ahead - prosto🙂a little bit differently than in Croatian: lijevo, desno, ravno. We have also a word równo which is very similar to prosto, but in sense of a direction we will say prosto. I'm looking forward to your next videos!🙂🙂❤
