There is also another option for washes, you can make them yourself. Just take some enamel paint of your choice and then add double the amount of enamel thinner and you've got yourself a cheap and just as good enamel wash

We have several Enamel Matt Varnishes, Mattcote and Enamel Varnish Spray. You should paint the model, add gloss varnish, add decals, then either add gloss varnish then the wash or add the wash then a matt varnish.

I used Humbrol gloss coat on an acrylic model, and applied humbrol enamel wash to the panel lines, when I used humbrol enamel thinners it stripped the wash, the gloss coat and acrylic pain underneath leaving the bare plastic visible. What did I do wrong?

Anyway I perfer to paint with enamel paints (I like the finish and strength they have fully and a matt finished. So do you do a clear varnish in the mat that suitable for enamel paints ?. Also would I be correct that I should paint the model add decals Then the varnish/top coat and finally the wash ? This would be of help, oh a typical Gunpla/gundam model kit is like the MASTER GRADE RX-78-2 GUNDAM VER. KA im building/painting atm

Hmm gotta get myself one of these washes: After I paint my tanks they look toy like and the humbrol enamel/oil paint to me hides the details and seems the wash could bring those back. Just one thing I wonder: after I have painted my tank I shall use a spray primer and after that use the wash like in this video: But shall I let the wash dry completly and then use a cotton to dry away the wash I dont want left or with a brush with nothing added? Shouldnt the wash be permament after it has dried completly?

I've found that Humbrol Enamel Thinners is quite a strong product - it can even effect acrylic paints! You might get a better result using plain white spirit - it's what I use to remove excess wash and it's been fine.

It can but you MUST apply an acrylic clear coat. Future floor wax (has different names in different countries) Or you can use the paint mfg's acrylic gloss coat. Make sure you let it harden for at least 24hrs, preferably 36-48. Also, try not to mix mfg's. Stick to one throught the build. Different mfgs use different formulas and some acrylic gloss coats can "shatter" acrylic paints from another mfg.

I'm still learning myself, but from my understanding you don't have to do anything before you weather, but a top clear coat or varnish is useful for protecting your weathering when handling your model. I've smudged and had to redo panel lines without it before. I don't know what an enamel wash with thinner on enamel paint will do. I'd recommend testing on a plastic spoon.

+Munro Edwards Decal Fix sorts this out - put a load of it where the decal will go, apply the decal as normal, then brush Decal Fix over the decal and leave for at least 12 hours. The Decal Fix is very sticky and melts the decals slightly, as a result of which they settle down in to panel lines (as pointed out at 2:55 in this video) and over lumps and bumps.

Me too! I am using the exact products and techniques as shown in the video. Acrylic paint first. Then Humbrol Clear Gloss on top before using the washes. Washes seem to work pretty well on one coat of Humbrol Clear Gloss. But the minute you apply just the smallest amount of Humbrol Enamel Thinners, it strips the model back to the base primer layer. I thought that Humbrol Clear Gloss was supposed to protect the acrylics underneath! So very frustrating.
