Introduction to Balancing Chemical Equations

How to balance chemical equations. We'll start out with examples that show the concepts behind balancing chemical equations. We will start with a word equation, and then write a chemical equations, and then visualize the atoms and molecules and how they change. To figure out if the equations is balanced, we look at the number and type of atoms on each side of the arrow. If the number and type of atom is not the same on both sides, the equation in unbalanced. We need to change the number of one or more of the compounds in order to get the atoms to balance. We do this by placing coefficients (numbers) in front of each of the compounds. When balancing equations, you cannot ever change the subscripts of a compound.

I love science too it's one of the most interesting things to me because it is how the universe, big or small works. I love physics and other hardcore sciences and always love studying it even when my friends in class are complaining about how it doesn't make sense. Last semester when we did a physical analysis project on anything you wanted I got 108% on that thing when the next highest was a 95%. My teacher said it was so good it didn't deserve a 100% xdd

I'm a public high school chemistry teacher and if your teacher isn't showing this to you...wow!!! This and Kahn Academy are nothing special--it's classic teaching (called direct instruction). This happens everyday in my classroom and it should in yours. The only exceptions are I'm ad free and HCl can be a neat demonstration. When concentrated, HCl will eat concrete and make pennies float! Chemistry is cool and it should be shown that way.

Hey Tyler, I live in Australia and I am currently studying health science and nursing at university. Without a doubt my lecturer plays at least one of your videos every time we are learning something new because even though she is a great teacher you make it so easy to understand and I know my lecture group of 100+ people all really appreciate what you do! So I just wanted to let you know (which I'm sure you already do know) that you are truly such an amazing person for helping so many people the way you do. I can guarantee I wouldn't have understood scientific notation or how to balance equations if it weren't for you, so thank you times a billion! Please don't stop the amazing work your doing, it really means so much to so many people. Thank you :)

Also, for people that are trying to get harder balanced equations, his next video ("Balancing chemical equations Practice Problems) helps a lot. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

As a 40 year old who never ever took Chemistry, Tyler's videos are the only thing getting me through my college chemistry class! My $250 book is worthless. Tyler's videos are priceless. I prefer this visual style better than Khan Academy's visuals, which I still use, but these are better.
