Introduction to AWS Lambda & Serverless Applications

Ғылым және технология

In this session we take a high-level overview of Lambda, a serverless compute platform that has changed the way that developers around the world build applications. We explore how Lambda works under the hood, the capabilities it has, and how it is used. Join expert guest Chris Munns, Principal Developer Advocate of Serverless Applications, and by the end of this talk you’ll know how to create Lambda based applications and deploy and manage them easily.

This was a fantastic lecture. I was confused about AWS Lambda and Step Functions for a while, but this talk explained it effortlessly with plenty of examples. And excellent presentation!

I love the tools. Curious how cost efficient it would be to build out those tools yourself and just use aws for ec2

Hardly efficient. Under the hood these still require lots of servers, memory and resources for scaling up and down. Lambda provides the convenience of considering pricing purely on the execution times. If your DIY services is not on demand at certain times, you still have to keep your servers online. You won't be able to physically add/remove and buy/sell servers as fast as what cloud services offer.

How to compare cheap $5/mo shared host LAMP vs AWS Serverless? Sure there's pros/cons, but I can get a decent web app up and running super. Scaling is different as well as network security, identity, logging, etc but super simple and fast and easy. I like AWS serverless and its place in the AWS world, but not sure I'm sold on it yet. I guess it depends on cost and needs.

Serverless is meant for use cases wherein you are integrating between applications and don't need a dedicated infra to do so. Basically, it is like you need the infra only when you need it (per event). With a webapp it is different and serverless (Lambda for the matter of fact) will not suit it for obvious reasons such as Lambda limitations (disk space of 250 MB, execution time of 15mins, etc). Hence comparing LAMP with serverless may not make sense.
