Introduction to 3D printed concrete

Check out this video to find out the magic behind 3D printed concrete. I discuss the compositional differences between this type of concrete and traditional concrete and I also talk about how this technology is pushing innovation in structural designs and forms. I also discuss successful examples of 3D printed concrete around the world.

    Very informative piece. It seems as though this tech just might be starting to catch on in wider use. With builders like ICON in Texas developing their own in-house printers and acting as a builder in a vertical integration while also being able to conquer regulatory hurdles, its only a matter of time before we see a paradigm shift in construction using this tech. This is especially true today as our industry is confronting runaway material costs and an acute skilled labor shortage which is unlikely to improve any time soon. I really do believe, like you stated, that additive construction is the future and may very soon be the now. I work for one of the top 10 residential homebuilders in the US and I cannot wait until my industry can break its old habits and embrace methods like this. If we fail to do so, we will be left to the history books I fear! Please make more content that explores the emerging world of additive and modular construction tech!

    @@BelindaCarr I have a lot of questions regarding 3-D printed concrete homes. I have not found any ACTUAL examples of homes built this way. Does this method also install roofs, doors, windows, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, stairs etc...? From what I can see 3-D printing can ONLY make a partial shell (no roof) of a home. How about the physical footprint of the 3-D printer itself? There would have to be room on the jobsite to accommodate some kind of gantry system that, by necessity, would be larger than the house itself. In urban and suburban areas you may only have small building lots. I would like to see an actual REAL LIFE example of a 3-D house being made and the ACTUAL TOTAL COST. I smell a political government program SCAM to fleece the tax payer. This makes shipping container homes seem reasonable.

    Whats the simplest way to integrate steel reinforcements into 3D-printed buildings? What about insulation? And is it more efficient to print the whole wall structure or just the outer shell and filling it up with reinforcments and conventional concrete? Nice content btw :)

  • @hellosoll2953

    @hellosoll2953

    2 жыл бұрын

    To integrate steel reinforcement into 3D-printed building could be made possible if you print the outline of the wall first, add the rebar, then cast it. With this method, the printed wall outline acts as the formwork for the structure. This would be case if you need the reinforcement in the design. 3DCP offers flexibility in terms of the width of the extruded concrete and the material you want to print (higher strength concrete). With that in mind, you may want to consider designing building with load bearing wall. About the insulation, you can produce double wall for the building and apply the insulation in the void.

  • @165Dash
    @165Dash3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Belinda: I’m still not grasping exactly how tensile strength is being introduced into the robotic fabrication process. One might argue that factory-based fabrication of prestressed double-tee floor beams, commonly used in parking garage construction, is already “robotic” to a considerable degree. In my region, in common building construction, concrete is primarily used for foundations and floors, is reinforced with steel and is almost never seen. Critical yet fundamentally prosaic from the standpoint of architectural expression.

    Hi Belinda, traditionally concrete is reinforced with steel (re-bar). Are you saying that the carbon fibre additive to 3D printed concrete is a replacement for steel reinforcement? I'm wondering what the differences are in terms of structural rigitidy and durability between traditional steel reinforced concrete and this new type of concrete composition. If the carbon fibre reinforced concrete is an adequate replacement for re-barred concrete, should we see a transition to this composition of concrete even for companies using traditional methods?

    Each layer would need to cure before the next layer was put on top of it, so that the weight of the layers didn't crush the ones below. This means very fast cure times, like under a minute. At the same time, if it cures before it leaves the nozzle, it would jam the machine. Maybe a two part epoxy concrete that is mixed in the nozzle. Both parts would have to be pumped to the nozzle separately.

    Michael Deering all of those parameters are engineer-able with the right binder Your input to this young lady are true only if you are using OPC Set times of the right binder ( cement ) for the job can be a matter of seconds-- or days if such is needed As stated earlier, cure time is also adjustable. Usually I like full strength within a few hours if I’m fast-tracking Since there is no shrinkage ( the number one cause of cracking in OPC ) one does not have to worry so much about fast set There is no curing procedure as with OPC

    3:00 Form boards aren't always wasted though. You can reuse just about all of it and most concrete guys I know do. I mean, you only get a half dozen, maybe a dozen pours out of them usually before you most guys replace them, but still. I've actually thought about designing a modular fiberglass or plastic/epoxy form board system that you could extend in length and snap/pop together and stack for taller footers and slabs on sloped grade etc. Could even do nice texture on it so exposed footer looks good. Don't steal my idea now.

    Most/all builders don't use wood forms for walls. They use reusable metal forms that you can rent and they drop them off in a container like a large dumpster. Takes a few days to bolt together then one day to pour. They are usually patterned like brick but any pattern is possible. I don't see any way 3d printing cement walls can beat that speed, price or simplicity.

    Lack of *actual* reinforcement is a real problem. fiber reinforcement is not at all the same as rebar.

    Considering the CO2 emissions of concrete, I would be looking for something greener if I were building anything of a novelty nature.

    As the sole and only 3d print concrete license owner, that covers all 3d printers, its sad to see piracy already creeping into this sector. The human manual labour construction companies are now facing a new challenge of pirate 3d print companies making commercial gain on extremely low cost prints achieved by not paying royalties, piracy. Steeling money, jobs and businesses from the wider comunity in such a new sector is very disapointing. All manual labour construction companies and comunity should be asking all 3d print sellers making commercial gain did they license check and pay the royalties, no matter where the stl came from or who drew it. To not is piracy. And this fast growing competition to the construction sector and job market has already a lack of checks and ballances. Pirate farms can and are being close for non payment of royalties so i urge all companies espesially manual human construction firms to check all commercial gain being made on 3d printing concrete. As it stands this is one sector of 3d printing that requires pulling into line. As its growing fast and so are the losses. I can easly confirm wether royalties are being paid or not. Its been revieled to me in the last few days the rapidly growing scale of companies comming on line making commercial gain and the scale of infringments and non royalty payments. Please all assistance apreciated. Thank you.
