I like the simplicity and how utilitarian these are. Bungy cords with metal hooks have a tendency to scratch racks and vehicles so this is a safer alternative. Thanks!

How do you use these?

Yeah, so much more flexible and easy to handle and store than a bungee and no cumbersome hooks to catch and tangle in everything. Definitely much better.

You have made a convenient tie-down cord. It has its place but it is not a replacement for a stretchable bungee cord with hooks. Just another way to secure items.

I keep several miscellaneous lengths of un-bungee cords of varying thicknesses in an old rubbermaid take-a-long container in my pickup. It's surprising how often they're useful when they're always on-hand. After whipping a few of them, I ran out of cord but used some heat shrink to simulate whipped ends on the small stuff. It seems to work well.

I have a hatred for bungees. I’ll take a piece of rope any day. Last week I ran over a bungee cord and the metal hook stuck in my tread. It beat the crap out of the side of my truck before I could stop and pull over. After removing it the tire went flat. I hate them even more now.

The other useful trick in this video is know your hand measurements. They come in handy! (pun intended) I’ll have to make some Un-Bungees soon.

I made a bunch of these based on your video. I'm very happy with them and find them super useful for a lot of stuff. I find that these combined with 3/8 chains along the sides of my pick-up bed tying down anything is quick, secure, and convenient.

huh, I basically do the same thing, I keep a couple of 4-6 foot lengths of rope tied to the tie points on my s10 for quickly securing something against the tailgate or into the corner. for bigger items I'll grab the ratchet straps I have rolled up in the back seat area of my truck. to me, bungees are generally too much money for too little use, but sometimes they can be the perfect solution, but in those cases I usually either make one on the spot from a roll of shock cord, or improvise around with a truckers hitch and some rope.

That’s great. Any reason to do the knotted loop rather than a bowline? The bowline is stronger and could be untied easier if need be.

You took plenty of time to patiently explain how it was made but seemed to rush through showing the applications. It would have been great to see more of where you use this and what knots you use with it.

nice! I have done a similar thing with 3ft of paracord for backpacking hiking. but on one end I have made me a Tautline Hitch loop. It is infinetely adjustable and won't slip when pulled> But I will admit I cheated on the other end, placing a Nite-ize figure9 binner

I love the look of the whipping but is it necessary? Is melting the end not enough?

You can just melt the ends.

it's a more skilled finish but I have used gaffers tape and melted the ends on my ropes

With plastic rope I usually just melt the end to whip it but no thread. An old school sailor would probably make a braided eye.

What you showed here is _not_ a bungee cord. Most bungee cords consist of one or more strands of rubber surrounded by a braided fabric cover. What you have there is a tarp strap.

It doesn't matter, it's a stretchy piece of cord. It's a bungy cord. Thats not what he's showing you. Though he showed you, and you're already wrong. You live in a time of convenience.

My finger is 4 inches long. It's the same length as my.....never mind.

I think people are missing the simple irony. You are used to convenience. He is showing you what used to be. What is literally superior, can be made for a pittance, and just requires a little knowledge. This is real knowledge.

You could just buy a bungee.

What you are holding is a rubber cord, not a bungee cord. Poor Start!
