Introducing the Bastl Midilooper

The Bastl Instruments Midilooper is a device that listens to MIDI messages (control information about notes, dynamics and other parameters) and loops them in a similar way an audio looper would loop pieces of audio. However, loops of MIDI messages remain in the control domain, which means a lot of other processes can happen on top of them - timbre modulation, envelope adjustments etc.

I thin it would be fair to say this 'midi looper' is a midi sequencer. I like the name though it clearly defines what it can and can't do. Most (not all) midi sequencers allow for programming and editing on a per step basis, also multiple sequences can be chained by to create longer arrangements. This on the other hand just records and plays back midi in real time. It's a bit like the difference between a DAW and a audio looper pedal.

Very interested in this. In the last example, is the TR-08 getting clocking from the looper? Also, could this work with the looper getting clocking from the TR-08? Also, in this setup I'm assuming that when using the CP to control the D-05, sounds from the CP are coming out of it also while controlling other synths? I'd like to do a minimal set up like this, but having the looper get time control from a Novation Launchpad pro, so I can kind of chain together up to 7 different pieces... not sure if thats going to work.

Another thing: I am having serious problems with the Midi Looper simply stopping for no good reason. I have ruled out what goes to the input. The stopping also happens with nothing in midi in. And it happens under midi sync as well as internal sync. But there seem to be a variable in what has been recorded. Like, some loops can go on for a day without stopping, while other loops are lucky if they reach five minutes. And loops with more than one track are more likely to stop than if there is only one track. I would love to use it for live performance, but as it is, that would be nerve wrecking. Do I have a faulty unit or what? Thanks.

the difference is in the interface and immediacy of access to the looping functions. yes you can technically do the same thing with a sequencer but you won't be able to use it really fast with pressing single buttons. the focus of sequencer interface is usually editability and precise control. the focus here is the immediacy

can u undo/redo overdubs? if so how many? looking in the manual, doesnt seem like you can, which is a bit disappointing considering it should be easier to implement in midi data than audio data?

  • @binarylabs7573

Overdubs are part of the main functionality; when you record over a track the new data gets merged with the existing one. There are two ways how the merging is done: overdub and overwrite (details described in the manual). There is undo/redo but you can reset the bank to the last saved state which kind of does an undo. I gues not having an undo is part of the performative focus..

@@binarylabs7573 ah that sucks, in my performances i find myself using undo a looot on audio loopers so it's really a dealbreaker for me tbh. I like building up loops then using undo/redo to remove and add layers ive already recorded, which is just not possible with only overwrite functionality

@@nutritionalyeast7978 good to hear that from you. actually this might change in the future. we are planning to make a bigger update in the future so if more people are into UNDO than we might do it. I actually prefer the danger of no-undo but after playing a bit with a boss looper i understand the appeal

I just ordered one. 🙈 I have one question though (after reading the manual): Can a loop have any number of beats? Like if I record a loop that ends up at 53 or 71 beats, will that be ok?

  • @binarylabs7573

    @binarylabs7573

@Trk-El-Son A loop can have any number of full beats. To achieve lengths that are not a multiple of 4 beats you have to manually set the length (before recording or correct it after). When you establish a loop by recording it will quantize it to multiple of 4 beats always

exactly how binary labs explained. just want to add that if you want to work hardcore polyrhythm style you can use the reset input to go to the first step after any number of steps

Bastl Instruments I do not find this to be true. When changing the loop lenght after recording, there seems to be a selection of fixed lenghts to chose from. This is also what the manual says. E.g. we can have 32 beats, 36 beats, but not 28 beats. Or am I missing something here?

  • @bastlinstruments

@@Trk-El-Son yes - there is a limited selection to allow to ease the access to the most values as the manual mentiones. however this might change. It would be great to have your feature requests archived via email communication so we can use that when we work in some of the user requests.

why? most of the time you don't want this to be your master clock. loop length is set with buttons which is more precise than a knob

You showed more of the modular setup and the Moog, separately, in the video than your own product. Are you that ashamed of it? Overview videos should be short and to the point. It's like you confused a demo video and a preview video and the result didn't do justice to either one, much less your product.
