This is the best thing to happen to long haul economy air travel in decades! I'm honestly baffled at some of the negative comments. Are you kidding me? You'd rather sit in a seat for 12 hours because you're worried about farts? Some people are such idiots. I guess evolution programs the majority of the population to be innovation-averse naysayers: resistant to and suspicious of all change, no matter how sensible. This concept has been implemented on trains for ages!!! Thank you Air NewZealand for making this great idea a reality in the sky as well! You have my business!

Agreed with you. It's as though all the haters don't realise people already lie flat in business / that there is ambient flight noise everywhere / that you can use earplugs/earphones to block out noises etc. That's the beauty of this option: it's just that, an option. If you hate it so much, don't use it. If you want to pay for a 2-3hr block of sleep that you need during the flight you'll pay for the privilege. Or buy a Skycouch, or pay for business lie flat bed. People will always be negative about innovation, that's their loss.

A round trip flight to New York and back is $2764 with Air New New Zealand and takes 21 hours, so this is great news that they're willing to give each passenger free time in the Skypod thingy. *A win for economy-class and consumers everywhere!*

So people buy the tickets for economy seats. Then during the flight they can hire the pods for a slotted period, while their seats become unoccupied? Hmm (You leave your belongings at your original seat- I’d feel very insecure about that) Not to mention people only sleep when they feel secure and in comfortable setting. If you only have a certain amount of time on the clock to get comfy, try to sleep, sleep and finish off your sleep. You become worried and prob won’t get that good of a sleep. I’m not saying that it is not a good idea. I’m just trying to look at it from a different perspective and give a constructive criticism. I want air Nz to do well.

You just get 4 hrs, in addition to the economy ticket one has to pay extra ( thou less cost in comparison to business class). Seems it will only work in rotation, considering the total number of economy passenger vs the number of skynest bunk beds . Would be nice if long haul flights have a bunkbed + seating option.

great idea finally one airline that is thinking outside the box ! Non of the other airlines for over 40 years ever improved the seats specially in Economy. The problem will be there will be not enough pods to book. Ideally it would be having night flights where majority of the plane is only those pods. The airline would get for sure more bookings. I always look at a night flight and book that one first ! Then 2nd I check the type of the aircraft, airbus 380 my priority. So the airline that thinks ahead wins !

How does this work? Is it included with standard economy/premium economy tickets? Is it an optional add on? Or an upgrade? I highly doubt this is how it works... But it'd be interesting if, for long haul flights, they had an online booking system for economy passengers, where they each got 3-4hrs in a pod (first in best dressed regarding times) - That would mean for a 12hr flight, approx 24 people would get to experience it per 6 bed pod... I can imagine that would be a great incentive for people to fly with Air NZ, knowing they would be able to have a 3-4hr comfortable power nap... & Would also mean it gets recommended/talked about more, as their are obviously more bodies experiencing it... Just an idea ❤

Can the passengers who book Skynest only lie flat throughout the entire flight? How about if they want to sit up? (2). How do they eat their in-flight meals and take their drinks? (3). Are there "seat belts" to fasten so passengers don't fall out from their flat beds accidently or during turbulence? Does anyone have the answers?

Because that would then make the aircraft too heavy. Aircrafts have a centre of gravity envelope that pilots and engineers must calculate before every flight. If there are a bunch of bunk beds in economy which is usually at the rear of the plane, the weight would throw the whole centre of gravity off and could be very dangerous for the stability of the aircraft and it's position whilst flying. It will also increase fuel usage due to increased drag and thus decrease the aircrafts range and efficiency. Meaning higher airfares to make up for those expenses.

well, it's a neat idea and I hope it gets through, but 6 bunks in Y cabin with 200 seats? The laws of supply and demand would dictate $$$ even for short rest periods

Let’s hope they tell their staff about the product as well....as I will never book air New Zealand..ever again....after the 2 extra seats I paid for with my Air New Zealand Sky Bed......were given to two other passengers ....15 mins after take off on a 12 hour flight. As staff appears to have NO IDEA I’d paid for them!! WOEFUL. And the complaint lodged after.....they could not have cared less.

So I understood that you’re “addressing customer pain points”, but I didn’t understand if this was how it is sold and used. Do passengers lay down for the entire flight? What are the crash preparation procedures in a bed (and does it make it more dangerous)?

It will be booked for a few hours only so a waster of time and money IMO. Then be prepared to get inconsiderate people in there making noise etc, followed by arguments. Stupid idea.

Build 3 boxes in. Not only 10% got it then 30% can use it. Only flightsecurity offices maybe make hassles? When your plane crashes then 18 people get up? Or nobody

I mean it's a good idea. It's not the payment that's the issue though, it's the amount of beds that will fit. I mean economy now is most likely 2-300 people so will it be enough? So if you don't get a bed your still stuck in an economy class seat? Will it be able to fit the plane? Airlines today are for profit unlike in the past it used to be for comfort and style. Pretty sure it's first come first serve. It's a great idea I just don't think it will fit 300 or so economy class passanger
