We, too, have a 75-lb female Mal/G Shepherd mix. Rescued her from County dog pound in 2022. Now 6 yrs old.. She is an excellent and loving family dog for my wife and I, but she is iffy with strangers. So if you want to enter my house, you can, but you may not be getting out if we and she don't like you.

I once had a hand-picked Leonberger (first inspected him the day he was born- monitored him pretty much twice a week until he was old enough to play with and showed his character and the dog he was becoming-then finally brought him home at 10 weeks.) Your herder is certainly a good looking, intelligent Herder, but dunno bout the 'giant' moniker, course I never spent much time around Malinois. In any event "Blaze" was a hair over 140 lbs right at 9 1/2 months. Abnormally athletic (he liked to run with my horses) and my 5'5" then 71 year old mother used to take him on leash to her bridge club where he would lie under the card table and keep her feet warm. As sociable as he was, at night, while out back of the house keeping watch over "HIS" property (heheh) he had a warning bark like the Hound of the Baskervilles when he detected any unwelcome presence- man OR animal. Thinking back over my lifetime experience with dogs, I don't think I ever had one better.

I had a whippet once although I didn't know it then. I just thought it's a mongrel I couldn't feed enough. I just called it BadDog. Everywhere we went he was a bad dog. BadDOG! Ide say. Super skinny making me feel awful no matter how much I feed her she makes me look like I starve her. I swear she did it on purpose. But boy was he fast he loved to chase his ball. The only time he did what I wanted him to do. He could almost fly. But all the other time she was just awful to be around a true badDog. But the public seemed to like her everywhere we went the public would try to offer advice and tell me how great she is. They'd shout over to us. Hey. That's a cool dog. Whippet. Aww that's a really nice dog. Whippet. But let me tell you it didn't matter how much I whipped it that dog was just bad. So one day I threw her ball into traffic and ran the other way. It was around a year later I learned he was actually called a Whippet. Not a whip it. 😅😅😅😅 Obviously not. No. I've never owned such a dog.

Belgian Malinois and German Shepherd Dogs .... BOTH of them are animals that have to be socialized early on and they need an owner that is the alpha in the dog/owner relationship. NEITHER of them are good for MOST families who have neither the time or ability to socialize/control/train them. These dogs not only need a lot of exercise; they need brain stimulation too.

I'm not to keen on it to be honest , seems like breeding practices that have wreck many breeds are coming into the malinois. I say this because you called him a herder. I don't think he could herd for any lenght of time with that kind of bulk. near enough doubling the weight can't be good for the health. Would like to here your thoughts.

Mals and GSDs are great dogs for a select few. It makes me sick seeing people get these dogs for protection when they have no idea how to socialize, train, lead, and provide the ongoing physical and mental stimulation they need. People were afraid to walk past one house in our neighborhood after their GSD got loose and attacked (unprovoked) someone walking a dog on the far side of the street. A few days later it happened again. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on one's viewpoint, the GSD was never seen again. Rumor has it, he forgot his way home.

Tell me sir do you know whether this pup is the product of extensive cross breeding between a German shepherd and Belgian Malinois or a pup from a litter between the same two breeds . And what I mean by extensive breeding I mean were you taking Malinois on a German shepherd of one line in freedom and you get a litter of puppies and then you take a German shepherd and a Malyn wall of another line and you get a set of puppies and then you breed those two puppies to get do you know some people do it differently I’m just curious because I have a Malinois female and at the time I purchased her I had a two year old German Shepherd of a good working line background he went about 110 pounds and I was intending to breed it to but unfortunately I came home one day from work and he got caught up in the Barbwire and either broke his neck or chock chock himself to death is a terrible loss for me he would’ve been three coming this November so I’m in the market for another German Shepherd of the same quality to continue with my plan because I’ve seen the crossbreed between the German Shepherd in the Malinois they’re quite impressive the Malinois is just too spastic there their energy is so little like wound up tighter than a drum it’s just unreal and to the lady who says she has a female and she doesn’t have any trouble with her I don’t think she’s telling the truth either it’s not a purebred Malinois

You implying that a Belgian Malinois is not good for a family is not fair to say at all. They are one of the most loyal breeds, as well as loving. If he or she is not conditioned as a puppy then it could be a bad fit for a family at that point. But to say otherwise, in mine as well as many people I’m sure is not a fair statement.

They've been mixed back and forth and back again for 200yrs. During the great wars they were thrown every which way. My dog is Belgium mix German his mum was Belgium. His mum was incredible so I think it's his dad's fault my dog likes to bark at dogs.or it's my fault bcos I haven't socialised him. Cos life isn't very social these days is it. But he's obedient listens to me. The military and police have mixed all breeds they don't care. It's just the show time fools who argue about it really. They are the worst of all owners breeding for looks. Ruining bloodlines they gave the German shepherd it's disabilities snd they still try to tell you that their bent back waddle doggie is proper. Some of the clowns even try to argue its natural because the hyena is the same. 😆 🤣 😂 😹 Hyena that isn't a canine and isn't back legs powerd. Like all dogs. All dogs get their power from their rear legs. Hyenas get their power from their front legs. Their back legs just to hold up it's rear. Malnois aren't some kind of super hero dog though like Facebook owners try to claim if they were more puppies would pass than fail the training schools for professional roles but they're a lack of dogs suitable for those roles which make the professionals use mix breeds full breeds whatever they can get into the school that pass. A dog is a dog at the end of the day.

That’s not true. As a matter of fact the more mixed the line is, the stronger the breed becomes, especially if the mix is chosen for traits. It eliminates genetic weaknesses, and steals strengths of other breeds. And actually, all European dogs are mixed, owing to the fact that European breeders value health over aesthetics. So once every two or three generations, if the dogs are becoming too thin for example, they’ll breed a burlier dog into the line. It’s better this way. They live longer, enjoy a better quality of life, and are more mentally stable. I wouldn’t picket for this or anything, but I think the whole pure breeding thing is unethical. It concentrates characteristics for both good and bad, but the bad outweigh the good in my opinion; it results in dogs born to suffer: German shepherds who get hip displaisia and have to be put down by the tjme they reach 9, Rottweilers with startling allergies, organ failure and sudden, painful joint dislocation owing to the fact that the breed is too heavy for its legs, low-energy pugs who suffer headaches because their nasal passage is too short, so they don’t get enough oxygen to their brain, brains which are many times too large for their skulls, and dachshunds who have back problems early on because of their very peculiar proportions. I also have a malinois by the way.

I have 2 Malinois Xs.and live next to a Military base. One Looked exactly like a Malinois until 3 Months old. The Soldiers were so happy to See a Malinois Pup because they were Deployed with them. Then at 3 months the GS started coming out and she turned into a lean Sable German Shepherd. She Went From Rock Star to just another Dog. People use to Stop their Cars and get out to meet Them and offer to Buy her. I have Mixes just for the same reasons given in this Video . My Dogs were trained by a retired Military Dog trainer/handler. They are much more suitable for Suburban life. I have been offered 3 full bred Malinois for free in the last yr. Their owners See the Calm and Control I have and Somehow think. I would be able to rehabilitate their High Drive unstable mind of their Dog. I was offer a Dutch Shepard too. Sorry I don't want to rehome any Dog that was owned by someone who doesn't understand the breed. The homeowners enrolls thier Dogs in Bite work classes and then Wonders why His Dog is always in attack Mode. It was the only Job Their Dog was ever given. Everyday my Dogs have to train and work for their food. Every day is refresher obedience and learning something new, scent work, agility or tricks. I 100% agree with this Dog owner and how he is going to train his Dog for Family life and out and about in the Community.

I have to weigh in on this. I see so many videos containing information about the Belgian Malinois that is so inaccurate: 1) Belgian Malinois are NOT paranoid, unstable or bad with the family. Virtually all of the negative information regarding the breed in this regard has to do with people's experience with Belgians from bloodlines in the Netherlands. That is where the military sources most of it's dogs because they are extremely high drive with no off switch willing to work all day and look for more. They fly in protection and can also be handler aggressive. No private person should seek to acquire such a dog unless they have 4 - 5 hours a day to wear him him out. If not they will tear the house up. So rule number one Netherlands; first place to go if you are military, LAST place to get a Belgian if you are civilian. 2) The situation changes dramatically when you acquire a Belgian from French, Czeck or German Bloodlines ( I'm talking working lines, not show lines ). They are much more stable and do not require nearly as much exercise to remain calm. 3) "Herders" Here in the U.S. we call them Malinois X. I had the good fortune of meeting a man about 16 years ago who owned perhaps the top firm that produced fully trained Personal protection dogs for civilians., Canine Protection International. They used German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois almost exclusively. While crossing the two breeds may seem like a way to get the best traits of both, it can also do the opposite and give you the worst of both. From what I can see, the main objective of breeders here in the U.S. seems to be to produce a bigger dog. I think this is a fools errand. In the first place, there is a reason why the military started using more Belgians. Healthier in general, longer service life, and easier for soldiers to rappel or climb with them harnessed to them. Now civilians don't have this concern. However, as the Belgian has become more popular, breeders in Europe have begun breeding their larger dogs and they have gotten bigger over time. For instance, read an encyclopedia from 1971 and it will list the top weight of a male Doberman as 75 pounds. Today they regularly approach and exceed 100 pounds. I know this man is very proud of this dogs size, but I can tell you that my Own Male Belgian Malinois is from the Czeck Republic acquired through Canine Protection International. ( They normally sell fully trained adults, but my wife and son wanted a puppy ). I picked him up at the airport myself. He is pure Belgian. At 4 and half months he was already 45 lbs. At 6 and a half months he was 62lbs and at 8 and half months he was 70 pounds. He is 2 years and 9 months old now and weighs 85lbs of rock solid muscle. He is tenacious in protection, laid back at home and never needs to be crated to keep him from destroying the house. He is plenty big, and hits a target at full speed without slowing down. You really couldn't ask for more in terms of ability and temperament in a trained family protection dog. My recommendation for someone wishing to acquire a Belgian for a family, is get one from French, German or Czeck lines. Stay far away from the Netherlands.

100% agree my dog is solid and trustworthy. We've got a big male Mal. His dad is from the US and mom is from Poland. We live in South Africa. He's 36kg which is around 80 pounds. And so incredibly strong. I do search and rescue work with him (he's not done a live case yet). We do a short run (2 Miles) with him every day. And we do trailing training 2-3 times a week. And a bit of obedience work and ball throwing for fun Apart from his teenage phase which was horrible he's the best dog I've ever known. By miles. He moderates his behavior with his 7 year old human cousin and is SUPER protective over my daughter and wife. I swear we must have a unicorn mali. We've never crated him ever and he's dug maybe 5 holes in the garden total. He's never destroyed any furniture but he has on occasion "forgotten" that he's not allowed on the couches. He spends most of the day chilling next to me in my office. He's started reacting to things on 2 occasions. Cars and cyclists at one point and men in caps at another. We just trained those out of him super quickly. Go sit next to a busy road and feen him treats as the cars an people come by.
