I never saw myself owning a Rolex and I would always dig deep to justify why Rolex wasn't "all that". Then I bought a Submariner and my perspective has completely changed. This is a special watch that is damn near perfect.

It's good to take a sanity check as watch lovers sometimes and realise that 1mm change is not revolutionary ;)

So Rolex decided to use slimmer lugs like back in the days, and Koh said “perfecting the perfect watch”

I must admit i don’t really see the difference. Was hoping for something a bit more radical in that the lugs would be tapered some more. I won’t be trading in my 2016 Submariner for the new 2020 ref

Wow all that chit chat for 1mm and two coloured bezels....lol!! The lugs do look better though, they at least get a modern 70 hour movement.

the 70h mvmt is irrelevent if you have 10+ watches. the 1mm is important. it's the biggest sub in 60 years.

DGPF that is true with respect to the power reserve! 1 mm is only important when going from a 9mm round to a 10mm round, as 10 is so much better!!

I used to think the now “previous” Sub was too chunky and the design was made with the customer in mind in that we could polish the watch for decades and not thin it out lol. Myself and many other also thought more vintage models looked better than the 114060 Sub. So shaving the lugs make a lot of sense to me. Also, by making it 41mm (and I think even the bezel has been thinned out a bit) it is now more on par with the Seamaster Professional, which always had the wider dial. The Sub always had a small dial. So making it wider while making it feel and look slimmer by shaving off that 1mm... I think that’s a brilliant move by Rolex.

Dude, properly put the watch on your wrist so we can see how it fits!!! Who actually wears their watch like this?!

He is at Rolex NY HQ, so this is a watch that has not been sized and most likely not for sale. You can still see the stickers on it. Would it be nice if they sized it for him? Probably, but I think you get the idea of it regardless.

The slimmer lugs and smaller case is a good move but why did they get the dial up to 41mm? They could have just shrunk the case to what it is and kept the dial and bezel the same at 40mm. I think that would make it look even better and more wearable for all wrist sizes.

You would never notice the difference unless they are right next to each other.

Of course one always needs to see watches on the wrist in order to get a good idea of how they look and feel. But I wouldn't be surprised if the increase in overall size from 40mm to 41mm merely has the effect of compensating for the reduction of the lug-thickness. It may be that the new reference doesn't actually _feel_ bigger than the old one? We shouldn't underestimate how much of an impact those super-sized lugs had! When I bought a Sea-Dweller ref 116600 and put it next to my Sub ref 114060 for the first time I remember feeling truly _amazed_ at how the Sub "felt" like a much bigger watch - even though the two watches are both 40mm.

Way to go, Wei Koh! You’re one of the first to review the actual watch. 👍

Should have kept the 20mm lugs and 40mm case size and just tapered the lugs and dropped in the new movement. Still really nice but also not worth begging for at the AD if you have the 114060.

Dave I mean over 90% Of all Rolex models are 40mm and under, same as majority of Swiss luxury market, big fellas like me measuring 6’3ft / 260lbs Are left with a small selection of pieces, I been praying and thank got the rumors of Rolex eliminating the Deepsea and SeaDwellers this year where wrong 😁🙏🏽, This year I will pull the trigger before purist and and small men change the game

@@frankv7068 ---I'm 240lbs and have a wrist of 7.5 inches. 39mm for me is perfect. I have three Steel G-Shocks at 45 and there almost not wearable. Rolex is a luxury watch and not, should not be a look at my huge watch. That's why AP Royal Oak is made at 39. Rolex doesn't make a 39 with a date. The Perpetual and Air King use to have a date years ago but not now. Also when someone wears a 40+ you see that its big. and that's not what I like. Remember the Sopranos were Tony had a 36 Day Date and it looked right on him, he was a big guy. I see a 40 on a 5-6 inch wrist and it looks ridiculous.

excellent review Wei, I''m hooked on Rolex very informative with a great relaxed delivery. Just got 43mm SD in steel and gold and in love with it.

The new Sub is a winner in my book. Maybe they could have slimmed down the lugs without the extra millimeter in diameter, but it's a handsome watch and much better proportioned than the old one. I'm not in the market for a Sub, as my 14060M is the only Sub I'll ever need, but if I didn't have a Sub, I'd go for this one.

If I can’t walk into an AD and buy this darn thing, it is meaningless to the general public anyway.

The gap to a pelagos just got smaller. Seriously, the pelagos doesnt have the prestige the sub has, but technology wise its a winner compared to this 2020 sub.

Just pick up a black Pelagos last week, best watch purchase I’ve made by far “you name it, it has it all” and so reasonably priced, it’s a winner without a doubt 👍

I have both and I'll tell anyone the Pelagos is a great watch but it's no sub any one that tells you it is knows nothing and probably has never worn them both. The new 41 is mucj more graceful and wears beautifully.

Getting high production value content out quick. Way to go!

It's a south east asian thing to do pronounce it as "C-M" and "M-M". Source: I grew up in Malaysia and Singapore.Quite common for locals to pronounce it by spelling it. This applies to sizes like S,M,L too.

I recently sold my old Sub Date #116610LN and bought a Sea Dweller 43 #126600. I’m happy I did. The new 2020 Sub is just catching up to everything else in the Rolex lineup, with the upgrade to the Caliber 3235 movement.

Fantastic review! Please review the new ops. The 41s seem odd and relatively controversial (a great recipe for entertainment) however I’m really interested in the new 36s and 34s.

Apart from the Bracelet, the difference between the watches is the same as the difference between 99 cents and a dollar.

It's nice to know that someone actually understands the simple Rolex philosophy of evolution, not revolution so to all the Rolex haters you have plenty of other brands to choose from.

I enjoyed the in depth comparison, well done!

Similar to the Porsche 911. Very small amounts of change from older model to newer model, just very gentle evolution.

Very subtle changes to the new Submariner but a great movement and some interesting new details. The return to the Kermit configuration is great news. All in all a launch that is consistent with the strategy of the Brand. The previous versions will remain relevant and retain their value well.

Finally not just some “experts” scrolling through the Rolex website but an actual watch

Cosmetically it seems to be just a small lug adjustment but this watch is now truly approaching perfection, the sensual curves bring back the magic of the earlier five digit references marrying the best of old and new. I'm smitten. NOW this watch is a one and done!

I like they have now a much better proportion of the hands. The hands got thicker and just look way nicer.

I do appreciate the enhanced power reserve. The rest is a more cosmetic upgrade. A real innovation would have been to reduce the height of the watch with an option for a cyclops/ no cyclops for the sub date.

If you held both of these for 5 seconds, you probably couldn’t tell which one was which. Rolex is the master. Just makes incremental updates and the watch community hands over their money.

Wow. Completely underwhelming. It really felt like you were struggling to come up with things to say about this. There really is no update on this watch if we’re being honest

@a False. The AD I went to who was trying to sell me an Explorer and a DJ36 made the comment "If you get one of these now, you'll be way above the waiting list for your submariner." The explorer is the shit model from the sports lineup and a DJ36 is... you know.... So from my experience, it was ALL about buying shitty rolex models to get that sub. I don't play that game, I'll stick to my Seamasters and get the 40mm sub when the price is right.

The movement is great. But the case size could be smaller (38,5 or 39mm).

If they had tapered the case more it might have actually looked integrated with the band but I guess Rolex can save that for the next model. By the way, do Rolex make watches for the general public? I’ve never come across anyone who’s managed to get their hands on one.

Visually cant tell the difference but when on the wrist i'm sure it will like putting on a DJII then a DJ 41. The slight mass difference and curvature of the lugs make all the differnce. Well done revolution and Koh.

Great video but I love my 114060. To be honest, I like the 39mm Black Bay 58. If the Tudor had a ceramic bezel, GlideLick and the bezel action of the 114060, it’d be the perfect watch.

Curious what the retail price will be. I have the 16610 and the 116610. Same size with redesign of case bracelet and movement. There is a noticeable difference in look and wear of the watches. Here the visual difference is imperceptible and the movement change is minor. This watch will appeal to people who are looking for their first sub in my opinion

Is the width across the lugs really narrower? It looks to me like the side profile as it tapers towards the end of the lugs is the same between the previous 40mm and this 41mm case, but the lugs look thinner because the bracelet is wider...say 21mm. Does anyone actually know the lug width?

Got my 116610 a month ago fully knowing it was likly a new sub was coming out. Do I like the updates...yeah kinda but not over the moon. I am glad I jumped on the opportunity to own my first sub when I did. Newer is not always better.

Fun fact: If you willingly remove the cyclops from your own Submariner (not a hard thing to do) for aesthetic purposes and with the time take it to service, no matter how many times you tell the people at Rolex, they are forced to reinstall a new cyclops as company policy.

It’s not 41.. it’s only 0.3mm bigger than the old one. Rolex official sizes have little relevance to the actual sizes
