Introducing... Fidelio
In this instalment of our Introducing… series we take a look at Beethoven’s Fidelio - a musical manifesto for liberty and justice.
Our resident opera expert, Alexandra Coghlan, explores the opera in depth, and talks to musicologist Stephen Johnson and Glyndebourne Chorus Master Aidan Oliver to get under the skin of Beethoven’s soaring music.
Fidelio will premiere in Tour 2021: www.glyndebourne.com/tour/

👏
Fidelio is a 19th century rewrite of Gluck’s Orfeo and Euridice. The gender-ambiguous protagonist goes on the underground rescue mission and must control his/her emotions in order to succeed. People who dislike Fidelio are usually expecting a deep philosophical story with a essence like Ode to Joy. It’s much easier to enjoy it if you just take it as a prison story like Escape from Alcatraz or The Shawshank Redemption.
