Introducing Amtrak Airo - A New Era of Rail

Built for the future, Amtrak Airo will debut in 2026 and operate on routes throughout the country. With a focus on comfort and efficiency, Amtrak Airo will provide even more advantages to traveling by rail. A share of Amtrak’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) funding will support the procurement of Amtrak Airo, which will be manufactured by Siemens in California.

    Now all we need are dedicated passenger rail lines so that we don’t have to wait for freight constantly even though passenger is supposed to have priority. Then we can run them on time and on a reasonable schedule and people might actually use them more, and they could be priced much more affordably to boot since they’re far cheaper to actually operate and maintain under these conditions. And if they were fully electric and high speed, we’d finally be catching up to the rest of the industralized world of the last 40 years. And I’m all for it!

    Funny. We have the same problem in India. But we solved it by creating dedicated freight lines instead of dedicated passenger lines. The dedicated freight lines we built are awesome though, first time in the world electric freight trains with double stack. The panto is damn tall. Its good because we'll now have 100% electrified railways within next two years. We also have the same speed issues :( . In fact ours are much worse than current US situation I think. Luckily we are building some dedicated Shinkansen tracks and first rolling stock from Japan already arrived. In parallel we have a plan to upgrade the rest of the tracks for 200 kmph operation but it will take a couple of decades to upgrade all the lines. Rolling stock for those speeds is already being manufactured in large quantities. Hopefully, US railways improves similarly.

    Technically, that's a government problem. Congress being paid by freight line lobbyists doesn't want the law on the books enforced for passenger train priority. God forbid they'll even provide Amtrak money to expand new rail lines (which alone is difficult in areas without much free land left)

    A little common sense on the part of Amtrak would help, too. There is car and truck traffic from Los Angeles to Las Vegas on I-15, and frequent and veeerrrry expensive proposals to build new rail lines and run a train. But there are train tracks already in existence from Las Vegas to Los Angeles and you can trace them on Google Maps. The tracks actually pass under I-15 right next to the Mirage Hotel on the Strip. It would seem very easy for Amtrak to simply run build a terminal at both ends and run a train on those tracks, but noooo ... the closest Amtrak station from Las Vegas is in Kingman, Arizona ... almost two hours away.

    Agreed, alot of my memories of Amtrak involve the Amfleet cars - I have enjoyed riding them and seeing Amfleet trains roll by all my life but there is no doubt it that the nations passenger rail systems needs some new, much more modern equipment. It wasn't until I started watching videos of other passenger rail systems in Europe that I realized how outdated our equipment is in comparison. Maybe this doesn't spell the end of the Amfleet entirely though, Amtrak talks of this great expansion to new corridors all over the country....maybe a smaller fleet of Amfleet cars would be good to test out the viability of new start up corridors/routes and if ridership proves promising, order up new equipment for those services?

The only place in the US that has similar pop. density is the north-east corridor, where rail is ok but could be better. The freight industry really doesn't have any incentive to electrify, or at least it would cost more than its worth to them to electrify lines and update rolling stock. At least for the amtrak routes outside the NEC to become electrified would probably require some nationalization of the mainlines (like what most of Europe is) or some significant incentive for the freight companies. There are two ways to do that, 1. We build a completely new rail system, and might as well make it an HSR system. Building it would cost insane amounts of money. 2. We decouple the freight carriers from track ownership. We make the existing freight companies split in to carriers who own and run rolling stock and separate companies that that only own the rails but are not allowed to run their own trains on them. After that we can either nationalize the track-owning companies or keep them tightly regulated local monopolies. As long as they don't have their own trains and are required to sell train slots on the open market, we'll see incredible improvements in both rail efficiency overall and Amtrak performance specifically. I still think that the track needs to be nationalized under Amtrak or a revived Conrail. But even if you just force the track companies to sell their train slots on an open market we'll see big improvements in the US rail system.

    I am a rail / train / public trans advocate, civil engineer who worked in the field for decades for a Gov't agency. I do welcome these new trainsets. HOWEVER, A LOT needs to be done regarding priorities on ALL the routes outside the Northeast Corridor which are owned by freight railroads. Passenger trains need to be given priority. Agreements / financial compensation need to be worked out ahead of time. More passing sidings, double track sections, better signaling, better coordination & communication, COOPERATION, etc, etc, are all needed. Otherwise, passengers are going to be equally unhappy sitting on a siding in these fancy new trains while a 200 car freight rumbles past going 8 mph. I've traveled outside the NEC enough, & know this situation all too well. Yes, all of this will take significant investment, tradeoffs of priorities, but is justified by the investment in these new train sets.

    I think long term we just give up on the long-distance trains and turn them into what they basically already are - expensive excursion trains. We just need to up the luxury level and increase the prices so that at least they stop losing $400 per ticket. It doesn't really matter if the long-distance trains are delayed by freight because they aren't transportation, they're "an experience". Aside from that, I think we will just identify the viable intercity short and medium-haul corridors and either take them over from freight completely (see Virginia), or apply very concentrated pressure on the Class 1s to allow intensive upgrades on those specific Corridors. Then we can increase the speeds on those corridors to 110-125mph - and there's our modest nation-wide HSR network already taking shape! Throw in a few expensive dedicated HSR corridors that we'll just have to build from scratch, and you have a great national HSR system! We just need to finish CAHSR, somehow fund Texas Central, and maybe a few more HSR projects. It really isn't that hard, we just need the national will to do it!

    Took a three hour train ride from WNY to Cleveland and enjoyed the economy experience. My only grip is the infrastructure being shared with cargo trains. They're good trains. These are the same trains that some of the more premium express services use in Europe, like the OBB Railjet services. The European version of the same Siemens trains goes 140 mph in regular operations on the Railjet services. So yes, Siemens could probably up their top speed over time to 140 mph. Well, at least the Vectron lineage of the Chargers makes them very easily upgradeable to overhead catenary with a pantograph semi-permanently coupled car! In fact, Amtrak will actually run all of the new AIRO trains with that electrified setup whenever catenary power is available. And if we decide to pay for nation-wide electrification, then it would be infinitely easy to just order more pantograph cars from Siemens and run all the Chargers on electric 100% of the time! Technically, the Cummins engine that Siemens stuck in their European Vectron to make it an American Charger would be dead weight. But that extra weight is literally peanuts for a modern train.

    I think the answer is "kind of." In Europe the exact same rolling stock is used on OBB's Railjet services. They're considered a high speed service there. And these will run on the 125-150 mph Northeast corridor and on a few 110 mph corridors in the West. So these will be "almost HSR" on many of the target services, but not all. Either way, this is premium express rolling stock that Amtrak is rolling out to almost all of its intercities nation-wide! I'm happy as a clam! 😁

  • @TohaBgood2

    @TohaBgood2

    Жыл бұрын

    Basically, yes. Siemens calls these trains HSR. In all fairness, they top out at 125mph in operation (135mph actual max). This is considered HSR by the international standard, but it is the lowest level of HSR service that is only run on upgraded legacy infrastructure. This is the very first step on the HSR ladder - existing corridors upgraded to high speed rail standards. That being said, we only have a few places outside the Northeast Corridor where speed limits are above 79mph. So this is not just good enough for our rail network, it's actually overkill. Amtrak is planning on upgrading a bunch of routes to 90-110mph in the near future. There are also a few potential 125mph corridors that could be upgraded to that speed at some point. But for now, these trains will only max out on the Northeast Corridor where Amtrak owns the tracks and has HSR speeds on it's tracks.
