Introducing a New Mouse

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

I have decided to add Gabi to Asriel's troop but introducing new mice can be tricky. Mice are very territorial little animals and do not like intruders. It is very important to do introductions in a neutral area, one that has no odor of either party and is the territory of neither. I usually clean my small tank thoroughly, clean any furniture thoroughly, line the tank with paper towel and give them minimal toys and huts to fight over. Then I monitor them well for a few days and if all seems well, transfer them to their permanent home, which I also thoroughly clean. There is always a little squabbling as they re-establish pecking orders, but with most mice after about a week or two, they are getting along fine. Basic rule is: allow a little fighting, but if there is blood, separate the mice and try again later.
The following is a more conventional way of introducing new mice, especially for very difficult mice (my home grown mice tend to be easier to introduce than pet store bought mice):
1. make sure you have an extra cage for the new mouse/mice;
2. set up a playground in a neutral territory like a table or a bath tub, clean thoroughly, clean any toys, you do not want anything smelling like your old mouse/mice, so they do not see this as their territory;
3. some people dab a little Vicks Vapor Rub or vanilla on their mice to mask scent and make them all smell the same, you can also switch toys and bedding from the different cages so the mice can get used to each others scent beforehand;
4. introduce all the mice under strict supervision in the neutral territory, be right there to break up any serious fights. If there is no blood, it is not that serious and you can let them sort things out, but if there is blood, you need to step in. I use my hand to separate fighters, if I get bitten too much, a Popsicle stick :) I also say 'no' gently but firmly when I see any body language that signals a mouse is about to attack another mouse. Mice learn quite quickly what this means and will often abort an attack once they have learned this word;
5. Leave them together in the neutral territory to play for about an hour (if they are getting along reasonably well) and only for ten or so minutes if they are intent on murder (mice are fully capable of murder, the reason why introductions need to be done carefully). If some mice seem to get along better than others, allow them to have extra playground time, mix and match the mice in smaller groups. Use toys as distractions, make playground time fun so they learn to look forward to this and to each other;
6. continue introductions in neutral territory until all seem to get along;
7. now put them in a small terrarium or cage that is very clean, so still neutral territory. Leave them there for a day or so, keep the cage always close, just in case you hear squeaking and can intervene in any fights. You can also skip this step and go directly to step 7. A lot of mousy introduction is an art, you have to go by what your gut tells you;
8. once they are getting along you can introduce them to the cage of the more submissive mice, usually the new comers. Again make sure everything is very clean to minimize territorial odors. Supervise initially, be close by in case there is squeaking and you have to intervene;
9. once everyone gets along here, they can be introduced into the main cage, again clean thoroughly. Supervise initially, watch/listen for fighting in the next day or so. If everyone is getting along after a few days, then things should be fine. If serious fighting breaks out, backtrack to the previous step.
It can take only a few hours to many weeks for new mice to accept each other, it all depends on the individual personalities of the mice. If there is no blood, then they are just sorting out their pecking order, if there is blood, they mean to kill. Females and neutered males usually accept each other within a month or so. Intact males should not be kept together, especially North American male mice, who tend to be more aggressive than European and Australian mice. They may be fine for their whole life and the best of friends, but there is a high risk that one day you will find a severely injured or dead mouse, intact male mice can snap at any moment and become murderous. If you do keep intact males together, never separate them, even for vet visits or cage cleaning, otherwise they can become territorial once you put them together again. The best companions for intact male mice seem to be female African soft furred rats, although intros need to be done carefully.

    I can't express to you how deeply I appreciate you and your little mousies. No matter what's happening in the world, there's a wonderful little place in the Yukon with a gentle, kindly lady and her troops of friendly, curious little mice. Mice are born, and grow, and have their little mousy trials and joys before they pass, and all the while they have the most lucky little life of all the mousies in the whole world. Your channel is a sanctuary of peace for me, and I'm sure for many others all over the world.

    I must give a HUGE THANK YOU to CVC for the ever entertaining and educational videos you share here. I had a mouse infestation in my garage and after trapping (in a lethal way) several adults, I found two babies in a nest with eyes still closed. I simply couldn't abandon them! I brought them in and immediately got on KZread. Your channel with Matilda was exactly what I was looking for! I began feedings every two hours for over a week until their eyes opened! I intended to set them free in the wild just as soon as they reached 10g. They were 3 and 4g when I found them. Well, I learned how to sex them and I have a brother and sister. Discovering they could begin breeding at only 5 weeks old, I had to make a plan QUICK! I decided to keep them and get a friend for my girl. Long story short, I now have FOUR mice - 2 girls and 2 boys and am building them an adjoining cage so they can still see and smell each other but can't get into trouble! When my Sissy mouse is a few months older I will breed her with my Peachy boy mouse. I have built them several toys with dollar tree items and popsicle sticks. I cannot tell you how much personality they each have and how much joy they have brought me during this intolerable lock down! Following your bonding suggestions, I sit with them most nights in my deep bathtub and allow them to play and climb on me and get lots of mousy adventure with different toys and play houses! THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR WONDERFUL VIDEOS and for how much love you show these amazing creatures! Can I come live with you? 😆

    Love the frequent updates. About a month ago I tried to rescue two baby deer mouse who were living in an air conditioning unit, but I was unsuccessful. Regardless, your channel was of tremendous practical and emotional support, in particular your series on Stewart. It went south when I was too careless with the heating and thought two heatpads on low was necessary to keep them warm. At the same time I blocked the cooling vent to the room because I was worried about bronchial infections from a breeze, and what happened was that they overheated and became dehydrated. I was feeding them every two hours but the excess heat was just too much. in retrospect, I should have measured the aquarium floor with an IR heat gun, and you must leave a part of the aquarium unheated so that they can crawl there should they feel the need to cool down... Thanks for your generosity and virtue.

    I can’t bring myself to get more pet store mice after Seraphina, she came to me with the gold Serabi, and always had like a weird mass on her stomach but above abdomen on the right side and it lead to her having a seizure, I still blame myself for not being able to take her to a vet when I noticed she got defensive of her aggression when Serabi touched there at all. Serabi a couple months after, would die as well, but from URI and just me not being able to afford a vet bill but I’m starting over with my current male Sterling (who is from a breeder) and he is a little shy of being picked up but as soon as you give him cheek rubs he’s your buddy

    I always get so paranoid when introducing new mice. Most of the time things go smoothly when I do or I catch serious fighting quickly so there’s no injuries but I remember once I introduced a new male to a group as he’d been by himself and it seemed that no one was giving him real trouble then I woke up to squeaking so went to check on them and they had bitten half his tail off. I had to quickly remove him and make sure he would be okay then clean the cage of the group of mice as it was covered in blood all at one in the morning. He ended up being fine and healing well and was introduced to another group which he was accepted into fine but it was a scare because there was quite a bit of blood.

I let each exercise and experience each other but I only have one little baby left and he is almost 4 yrs old and seems like he is still 1yr. He is very spunky and I wanted to know if I should get him friends or let him relax. He is very healthy and happy, we brush him with a fluffy little eye makeup brush and I want him to be happy. So should I add new guys or wait, what site can I order cheesies lol thank you and we love you and your babies

    Just pine and spruce boards, sealed with water-based semigloss Varathane for the huts. The driftwood is aspen, willow, birch and conifer, aged by years of wind, rain and snow. Once our Etsy store is up and running, I will be offering wild wood for sale...

    Female and neutered male mice do not smell much, no more or even less than a guinea pig, rabbit or rat, as long as you clean their cage regularely. Un-neutered male mice though can smell very, VERY bad lol

    I'll never trust wire wheels or those saucer wheels again. the saucer wheels have a tendency to get stuck and stop suddenly while they're running and it caused brain damage in a few of my mice. it manifested as waltzing mouse and those poor little babies just kept walking in circles 😣

    Asriel's tail got bitten by another neutered male, Leo. I separated them once I realized what was happening. I then monitored Asriel's tail, making sure it was healing up fine and did not need any antibiotics. Asriel is a tough little guy and it has healed up nicely all on its own :)

    The antibiotic Baytril does wonders as does putting them in a more dust free environment with better ventilation, the reason I love open concept mouseries so much. Once though they become very old and/or have some other underlying health condition, it becomes much harder to treat and it is kindest to have them humanely euthanized once you realize the antibiotic is not working, before the suffering becomes too great.

    Where do you get your enclosures and accessories from? I love them 😍. My mouse has just lost his brother (he's 1 year and 10 months now) and he seems lost and lonely, should I get him a friend/friends? I don't want to cause him stress or anyone to get hurt, he was originally from a pet store but I rescued him from a shelter with his brother Derek, they were together since day 1

  • @CreekValleyCritters

    He will be better off alone, just give him lots of love and attention and he will be happy. It is unusual for two male mice to get along so well. Most, even brothers, will eventually fight and try to kill each other. It would be dangerous to get him another male mouse companion. As to my enclosures, I make most things myself. I am in the process of setting up an Etsy store but health issues have delayed this :P
