Intro to thumb position! We cellists really need thumb position in order to play lots of music. It's like a key skill that unlocks the ability to play so much more repertoire and do so many more things! I really hurt myself when I first learned thumb position and ended up learning a lot later in life. Here are some tips on how you can get into thumb position and learn step by step how to do it without hurting yourself.

Thanks for laying it out so clearly. Some videos really rush through and having it really spelled out was very clear to me.

The most frustrating thing about scaling thumb position is THAT NO ONE TEACHES HOW TO DOTHE FIRST NOTE TOWARDS THE third octave scale. The hand has to be in certain shape and in position when using thumb and the fingers going up the higher notes.

@@sashaono I am considering in looking to buying the cello in the future but the direction to which the strings are tuned seems symmetrically disturbing to the aesthetical nature of the others, would It not make more sense for it to be tuned in perfect 5th from left to right as to make bowing make more sense.

So is the thumb position octave done in harmonics or pressed down all the way to the fingerboard? Thanks.

Hi! So you can do harmonics with your thumb as an option - usually this is great for beginners while you build strength and confidence in this position. As you start to use thumb position more, you will probably not use the harmonic and will press all the way down to the fingerboard. When starting out, I would recommend gradually putting more weight into the fingerboard until your thumb is touching. In other positions (other starting notes) you won’t be able to use the harmonic. Hope that makes sense!

You don’t use fourth finger on thumb positions ?

I don’t use fourth finger in thumb position. I think some people do choose to use it in some (usually very rare) occasions/circumstances, but many people’s (including mine) pinkies are too short to reach the fingerboard without collapsing the rest of your position. Plus, since you are using the thumb, you still get to use 4 fingers to make notes 👍🏼

Not ordinarily. Although I did see it done once on an Ilia Laporev video. He didn't mention why he had done it. The pinky finger is just much too short down that far on the fingerboard to be practical.
