Intro to the Progressive Period (First Half of the 20th Century) of Classical Music

In this video, we explore what I call the Progressive Period of classical music. This includes the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, which sees the birth of expressionism, impressionism, and folk idioms in classical music.

Its sad thst people who live in the city dont realize music like the other arts cant include everything neurosis bodyawareness, death, psychosis, entropy etc. Literature first went outside polite conversation. Painting followed. Music maybe aroundBeethoven began to investigate how to make humanlife musically expressible. This was necessary. Now there is pure art thatvmsy not even be for humanbeings etc.

I've aways considered 1908 to 1913 the Golden Age of music. There's a KZread vidio from "inside the score" that illustrates this.

And what about music like Schönberg's Verklärte Nacht? Is it a romantic music in 20th Century, probably why it is called post-romantic? And is it the same for Mahler's and Richard Strauss' music?

I LOVE the term "atomic period." I am fully on board with making it happen. "Progressive" feels accurate on paper, but I do wonder how well we can separate the term from "progressive politics," which of course doesn't align with early 20th-century music much at all.

Thanks! That was definitely one aspect that I had to consider when thinking of a name for this period. I just couldn't think of a more appropriate way to encapsulate the collective rush towards the future I sense during this time. Maybe it won't end up being the best choice, but I'm prepared to live with it for the time being.

Absolutely! This will be a running theme of this time period. And Scriabin will definitely part of that. Also, Hindemith.
