Intro to Slide Guitar - Basics for Starting Out

Музыка

This is an introduction to slide guitar for those who are just starting out. I give what I believe are the basics one needs to know to start learning slide as well as my own (somewhat subjective) preferences. Some knowledge of music and guitar playing is assumed.

I think this was exactly what I needed. Most slide videos assume a little more knowledge than I had, but this is a great foundation!

Completely agree! While blues can be explained in traditional music theory, I really don’t think it should be. That’s not its nature. Had someone describe to me the open E string as your bass and your third fret as the “magic” note that works with most songs. I tried it out then I was told to slide to the 12th fret to add throw a little “salt” or flavor on it. I felt like a wizard lol, idk why people make this stuff so complicated

It would be great if you could do a little series of these slide lessons going just a little bit beyond this because KZread is already so full of absolute beginner slide lessons but it would be really good to get some help from you beyond that. THANKS 😀

Great info Edward, I remember the first time I heard the sound of slide guitar. I was 19 years old back in 1986 and saw the movie "Crossroads". I was so blow'in away by the sound of slide, I just had to learn how to play. That movie and that distinct sound will forever stay in my memory. I really like the open G tuning, but I am going to dive into open D as my goal for this Winter is to learn "Feel'in Bad Blues" from the Crossroads movie, originally done by Ry Cooder. Keep up with your videos man, keep'in the Blues alive and well, Scooter in Montana

First time I heard slide was walking past a pawn shop and heard bloke trying out guitar. I took maybe half dozen steps past the shop but was drawn to the sound and went back to listen. That was some 32 years ago. All the best if you are reading this friend! Fellow picker from Down Under.

try putting a 24 gauge bronze med wrapped string on the bottom and tune it to E in place of the 9/10/11mm E. It will give you a lot of fun. It was my idea by the way so please give me some credit. Never seen it done before, ever. I think you could even try putting the 9/10 or 11mm on the top then and see how that sounds. Cheers. Awesome Edward! Hey you ought to record a series of "Slide Instructional Videos to your favorite Blues Tunes" starting off with "Crossroads" ........ this would be really easy to do, then you could monetize your awesome guitar talent. The Edward Phillips Instructional Slide Blues DVDs each one could have say 3 tunes/instructions how to play each tune for $49.95........ you would sell a ton of them! Just some food for thought.

I feel the need to share my appreciation of the Cedell Davis sound - Keeping the slide straight wasn't his priority but he still sounds 'good' to my ear! (although iggy pop doesn't agree) - I have a four string tenor guitar that I repurposed for slide til I can afford the time or money to make or buy my own oilcan/cigar box. I still can't decide how best to tune it. It has quite a short scale and I like to thumb pick the base lines. Do you have any recommendation?

I used sockets. I would try them out at the hardware store & freak-out the staff who always politely explained that's not how you use them.

You just have to go try them on. Expect the store staff to freak out a little when you start sticking your fingers in them. Bring your guitar so they know you're not crazy. Only buy the ones that are cmpletely smooth. One brand has some uneven )exterior ridging. Also, if the socket has etching (size & brand name) all around the circumference, don't buy it. Even if it is at the very top, it may create string noise.
