Intrepid 4x5" Review - Large Format for a Small Budget

In today's episode, Jules and I review the latest edition (September 2022) of the Intrepid 4x5" Black Edition camera which comes with 3D printed parts instead of the wooden front and rear standards. Intrepid updated the features across all their camera models, so 4x5, 5x7 and 8x10. Intrepid listened carefully to community feedback and now offer a wide variety of features across all their camera models (so 4x5, 5x7 and 8x10) which we will discuss in detail in a minute.
In order to do justice to this new 4x5" camera, we wanted to produce some proper shots with it for this review and arranged appointments with various special locations. For the first shot, we went out to Linfhof’s famous headquarters based in Munich. We found it fitting to tie the new Intrepid to the old tradition of the Linhof Technika.
For the second shoot, we went to the Deutsche Museum, a popular science museum that had recently been renovated. We explored the motor and aviation halls as well as the space exhibition.
For the third shoot, we went to the Boilerman Bar, an American Whiskey Bar that is part of Munich's 25hours hotel and comes with a particularly cozy and moody atmosphere. They were kind enough to let us shoot there and treated us with a drink.
The final shoot took place at the library at Munich’s city hall which is famous for its traditional look and old wood shelves. Please note that you cannot simply go there and take a picture but actually have to make an appointment in advance and get lucky if you are allowed to take a shot.

Always enjoy your reviews. I find them technical, "non-fanboy", "non-click bait" reviews of gear. They provide a good insight into the product and are always interesting to watch. I own the Intrepid 4X5 Mk II which I converted with their kit to a Mk III. I also own a Linhof Color Kardan 4x5 monorail. So, your review of the Intrepid in front of the Linhof building was highly appropriate to me. Enjoyed the photos and the explanations. I can only say to potential buyers that the Intrepid folks are incredibly helpful to folks who purchase their cameras and have questions. Great examples for customer service. While I love my linhof and take it anywhere I can drive. I would hate to carry it too long on my back ergo the Intrepid which I can easily carry. Great review!

I own the Black edition and find that it works great. I use a 90mm, 150mm, and 210mm lens with mine and am excited they are added a bag bellows and recessed board to their lineup.

at 8:30 good lateral thinking! - to add a 'diving board' on the back, to use wide angle lenses!; chamonix has one for long lenses, but a great idea, Intrepid should make one for this purpose, saves fluffing around with recessed boards.

It is very expensive to buy large-format film sheets, to enlarge this negative with special equipment onto large-sized photo papers. Each image would cost hundreds of dollars.

Wonderful! The image of the Linhof headquarters is a perfect tribute to the golden age of photography. This Intrepid is interesting for sure. I had a Chamonix 45N several years ago, beautiful, but sells for 4 times the price of the Intrepid. Clearly this camera is a perfect entry point into large format photography. Beautiful images, thanks.

I am very happy that you reviewed Intrepid cameras. I was looking into them, but didn’t know what I should look for, as I have never shot large format. Also what model tripod head are you using with the Intrepid Camera? Did this particular head give you better fine tune adjustments with this camera? Thank you for a great video!!

Very good review and also another great video from yours channel, it was always a pleaser to watch yours videos to learn something about analog photography. Linfhof was one of oldest camera manufacture still in production today and a very respected German brand like Leitz/leica. The building of Linhof remind me the building of Leitz in Wetzlar, for your form, however is much small. Germany are a country whit great production tradition, but nowadays is no longer the same...sad!

one tip, if the rack is in the shot, do like Linhof Technika cameras do, tilt down 15/30 Degrees! for the bed, and level up the standards, with rise to, this should get the clean image you need.

Thank you for the interesting review! However what I'm asking me is if there is a quick way to correctly setup the front and back standard, because in my experience everything that can be adjusted is initially mal adjusted when setting up a large format camera. It is simply annoying having to adjust the front and back standard angle precisely to 90 degrees when setting up the camera for a "normal" picture. With my Toyo View I can open the camera and can be sure it's adjusted correctly. I assume with the intrepid you need some additional minutes to get these basic standard angles correctly, right?

Greetings from Canada. Thank you so much for an enjoyable and insightful hands-on review of the Intrepid 4x5 camera. I ordered the wooden version about 2 weeks ago and I am extremely excited to receive it. This video will be very helpful and will watch it again once I have the new camera. Incidentally I purchased a used Schneider Kreuznach 210mm f5.6 Symmar-S lens just last week. I had it looked over by an experience large-format photographer and his review was extremely positive. I am looking forward to using the camera-210 lens combination for portrait work. Have you done a review of the Schneider Kreuznach 210mm f5.6 Symmar-S lens?

Thank you very much. Since I have Series 2 Gitzo, I guess an Intrepid is well worth consideration. The review was fair-minded. I wish the community luck. I wonder how many youngsters would be impressed by a 4x5 transparency on a light table. Or not? Time will tell.

Well, the price point of Intrepid cameras is definitely fine, quality isn't always - it can vary widely, and sometimes issues are not that easy to detect, especially without prior experience. Beware if you are a newbie, not every problem you will have with this camera might be your fault …

  • @SatumangoTheGreat

    @SatumangoTheGreat

    Жыл бұрын

Not an expert, but it depends on the lens. Some wide angle large format lenses need them, as the light fall off at the edges is very noticeable. It probably also depends on the design of the lens. Your X-Pan, although it's a 35 mm camera, needs to cover at least 12 cm, which is about the same as the long side of 4x5. So it is basica.ly a large format lens. If you use longer lenses you can do without them. He says in the video which focal lengths they used, but I am too lazy to check :-) Edit: they show a list of the equipment used near the end of the video. Some short (55 and 75) included. I guess it's about the design of the lenses in this case. I don't know enough about the subject to explain this. Although, with large format, you will want a lens with a large enough circle of illumination so that you don't get vignetting when you use camera movement. So I guess the lenses they use have a larger circle of illumination than the X-Pan lenses?

Just out of curiosity, why would you rotate a medium film back holder counter clockwise in this case and put the film advance winder under the camera instead of going clock wise and putting it at the top?
